I'm not enamored with signing Clemens. Honestly, he looked like an old man in the play offs for Houston. He had trouble just getting over to cover firstbase. I could see him turning into another train wreck, too.

knickfan23

well if you'd rather wait for randy johnson to work out his problems or for wang and chacon to become consistently quality outing type of guys thats fine. but dont count on having a chance to make the playoffs.

the yankees best shot of making the playoffs is either trade some good prospects for a good starter or sign clemens. i'd rather sign clemens than give up hughes or duncan.

btw, boston is better than ny right now and the only way ny makes the playoffs is if we become better than boston because the wildcard will be in the central this year. the tigers are the real deal and the white sox are right there with them

Well, in that case, the Yanks better not fall 10 games behind Detroit by the All Star Break. They are already 5 1/2 back now. If you get to a situation where you are 10 back for the WC with 80 games left and Detroit has good pitching that is getting better, it will be tough to win the WC. The best chance will be to win the AL East.

Hughes isnt ready. I saw him pitch in New Britain on Monday and he didnt pitch extremely well. He showed some good stuff, but when the ump screwed him he had trouble over coming it. His fastball topped out at 93...but that was once in a while, not consistently. I saw Shef and him on Monday.......

Cant rush Hughes. We could destroy his confidence like we did Drew Henson and what we are currently doing to Eric Duncan. Duncan should have started in AA this year....our impatience is a problem.

Just because he's the supposed #5 starter doesn't mean he's not gonna pitch big games. Isn't Wright our "#5" right now?

I am sure he will still pitch big games, but perhaps the blow to his ego will somehow work some majic and make him better.

I know alot of people will naturally disagree but I have never bought the fact that young pitchers are destroyed by being brought up too early. I'm not saying it has no effect, I am simply saying that I don't believe it will have that much of an effect on a guy like Hughes considering his mindset and personality.

I probably would not do it, however, simply because I would not want to take that chance.

Dioner Navarro should be comming off the DL for the dodgers soon (wrist). While gone, Russel Martin pretty much took his job. The dodgers have Sandy Alomar jr., and may not want to carry three catchers. Dioner was doing a pretty good job when he got hurt (except for throwing out runners). It would certainly be worth a phone call on Cashman's part.

Also, I have nothing to back this up, but I just don't believe a pitcher the caliper of RJ just goes from Ace to Bum. I think an Ace can look like a bum sometimes, but you just don't fall off that severely for good. For the record, I don't consider Cone in the same class as RJ as a pitcher (career-wise).

But what choice do we have?

We need to replace an ace of the staff right? For arguments' sake, lets say we already have - Moose. So now we need a #2 pitcher. What's a #2 pitcher? Josh Beckett-type? That's Willis, Zito, etc

That's gonna cost us.

I guess...but any other batter and that's a double down the line....plus, it was probably foul. 1B ump seems to have missed all three close calls tonight.

I do wonder what Mike Port is doing in the commissioner's office. Scheduling a lesser and relatively inexperienced crew for a series with a lot of focus is asking for trouble.

We need to replace an ace of the staff right? For arguments' sake, lets say we already have - Moose. So now we need a #2 pitcher. What's a #2 pitcher? Josh Beckett-type? That's Willis, Zito, etc

That's gonna cost us.

It really has been a major problem since Alderson left MLB. He broke them, and actually levied punishments and demotions when they didn't perform. Now? Ex-Red Sox exec Mike Port is a major softee, and the umps act like lazy tenured teachers with a weak principal.
