View Full Version : MLB.Tv looks bad this year

I think it was way better last year when you could choose real player. The compression is terrible for me. Not sure how to explain it since english is not my first language. But I´m dissapointed. The picture is not stable. Compression artifacts everywhere. Takes the fun away from watching. I live overseas so this is the only way for to watch baseball. Too bad. It was way better last year. I have a really good video card and really fast conenction. Anyone agree?

yes, they did really screw it up. the picture is bigger but without real player i can't full screen it and if i manage to through other means it is all fuzzy and impossible to see. unfortunately, they don't care about me, just their little exclusive deal with microsoft.

I miss Realplayer as well, as I am watching on a Mac and can't go full screen either. Now it doesn't even load the Windows feed. Somehow I have to get a normal PC or I will miss most of the season.
Except for the score this is a really bad start of the season. I slept through my alarm clock :-po'd-: (game started 4 AM local time).

The new player cannot be fullscreened?

not on a mac when it is using WMP. I had the same problem last year, which is why I chose to use the REAL player.
I haven't tried MLB today on my Mac yet, but hopefully it will see the WMP and startup the quicktime player instead, which may make things better... or at least allow me to go full screen.

I thought it looked pretty crappy last year. I wasn't equipped with any special monitor or anything, but even with a cable connection it was slow and fuzzy and forget about full screen. Go with MLB Extra innings. Only 160 bucks broken up in 4 payments. Consider up to 60 games a week and its a pretty meager price to pay per game.

Hmm, well I always used WMP so it isn't any different for me. I've been fine with it during ST games.

The new mlb.tv is awesome. It is a 400k stream instead of 350. The loss of realplayer sucks, but if you use firefox you can get the media player connectivity extension and break it out of the mlb.tv window and into a standalone player like Windows Media Classic.

I watched tonight on a PC with WMP, full screened it and it was quite watchable. That said, I don't notice any improvement from last year...the main page boasts bigger sizes and better quality. I don't notice any boost in quality. Also, when are we getting the promised multiple games at once innovation?
jimmyclark
04-04-06, 04:03 AM
I do wish they would go back to the condesned version they had two years ago..all the outs/hits/walks etc. Make it for real baseball fans. But it is glad we have these innovations nowadays. I wonder what my grandfather, who passe away 50 years and was an avid listener to Pirate games. would have thought about having mlb.tv in his lifetime.

I was able to use my TV as a monitor last year and blow the realplayer up to full screen. It worked, but the quality wasn't that good. This new configuration would not have worked like that. I'm glad I got MLB EI.

I expand the game to fullscreen and watch it on a TV for every game. (I used WMP for the stream this year and last).

So MLB.tv's feed comes out crappy? Does the picture come out looking block-like at times? I don't want to pay for this if the players look like they're made up of Tetris blocks.
LetsGoMurphys
04-04-06, 09:03 AM
Yes, very much like that. It looks bad. Not sure how to explain as I said, but it looks like small boxes (squares) when the camera moves around. It looks pretty ok when the camera is still, but not when it moves around.
It was NOT like this last year with real player. Sure it wasnt perfect last year either, but the pictire was much more stable and pleasant to look at.

for those of you with Macs who want to full screen it:

while in Mozilla, download that add-on, and select Windows Media when you're setting it up.

ruthianblast

I'll just add that I also use Firefox and the media player extension and the quality is basically the same as last year. It's not exactly like watching the game on tv, but it's a stream, not the highest quality but bandwith wise it's pretty standard for video imo. Slightly pixelated but overall definitely watchable.

This is the first time I'm trying mlb.tv, does anybody know why don't they show the Yankees game? There's a message about a national broadcast and nya local restrictions but the game is on YES...it isn't even on national TV. Does this mean all the Yankees games are blacked out on mlb.tv? I hope not!

Well my guess is that TV networks don't want people to start watching on mlb.tv instead of on their network as they will lose viewers. It's really for out of market people who couldn't watch on TV anyways.

Thats part of it. The teams believe (falsely) that even 2% loss of viewership to online streaming is too much. Thats the reason why FOX has the blackout on Saturday's.
Now, there IS a way to get around it that doesnt involve using a certain tactic that has been discussed here. I found it last year just playing around with MLB.com Media Player. Its confusing for me to explain it in writing (though i probably could if i took my time). But now, I dont have to go searching for ways to bypass the blackout. In order to pull it off, you need to have a PC with alot of memory and Microsoft IE (firefox wont do).
--
On a separate MLBTV note, it has become difficult to watch these games with some of the feeds they are using. To show the game using the raw feed from the truck, with no replay or scoreboxes makes the game almost unwatchable. It makes it hard for me at work to keep up with pitch counts, the score, the inning and whos on base when there isnt anything to tell you. For instance, tonight, there is no graphics for the Nats-Mets game produced by SNY. However, the Red Sox-Rangers game has the NESN graphics that you would see on TV. Really weird.

It clearly states the blackout restrictions when you sign up. Anyway, it's very easy to get around the blackouts by use of a proxy server. Try google.

I would rather say it in private. Considering that NYYFans.com is the most read board in baseball, word would get around pretty quickly and that loophole would be closed off. I would rather keep it to an "I tell you, and you tell someone" rather than splash it on the site. Has PM'ing been disabled?

I don't know what is going on with it this year. Yesterday mine completely sucked. Just listening to it was very annoying. At the beginning of today's game it was all choppy and annoying again. Now, the video feed is very clear but I'm hearing Sterling and Waldman and I don't get the YES bar with the strikes/outs/etc...

I hate how they cut to those 'MLBlogs' between innings as well. They always come back to the picture in the middle of a sentence. I'd rather sit through the commercials or just have a shot of the field.

MLBAM is looking for more advertising revenue, so they are trying out to see if they could implement commercials produced by MLB.com and slap it into the middle of these games. They are already bankrolling close to 200 million a year the last 3 years and they are looking for more. This is just one more way. If it takes away from my enjoyment of the game, apparently, it doesnt matter. But as it stands, all they have to do is make sure they return from commercial before the first pitch and KEEP THE GRAPHICS!! Nothing has been more annoying than having a game on with no knowledge of the score, pitch count and replays.

This is my first time getting MLB.Tv and I'm not disappointed with it - although I don't know what it was like last year. For the most part, the picture's pretty clear, but I did notice that when they show pictures of players and such, you can't really even make out their face unless it stays up there a while and begins to clear out. That is a bit annoying. I haven't tried it on fullscreen though, I'll have to do that.
The blackout thing is quite annoying... though it doesn't block out most of the Yankee games, I can't get any games of them playing the Royals, Tigers, Twins, Cubs or White Sox, so right now I can't watch their games! Blaaah...
If it's not too much trouble, would you mind telling me how to get around that thing too? If the PM doesn't work, my e-mail is chinroku@uni.edu. Thanks!! =)

Definitely...there've been complaints about picture quality and all, but when you have no other options it's definitely the way to go-and my picture isn't as bad as others would have had me to believe it would be. I'm overseas and wouldn't have access to any of it without MLBTV.

Fox games are always blacked out, as well as every game on Saturday unless it's 7:00 or later.(Unless it's televised on FOX in your region obviously) ESPN is blacked out also, but you would obviously just be able to watch it on ESPN.
MLB.TV still broadcasts Friday night games when it's on NY's local channel (UPN I believe.) That was actually one of my reasonings for keeping MLB.TV around even though I have extra innings, is because extra innings doesn't broadcast Friday night games on the local channel, but MLB.TV does. For the price, and being able to watch Friday night games MLB.TV is worth it, for me at least.

I use it all the time for D-Ray games because despite living in the "Blackout zone" I don't actually get any games on my tv. FSN isn't carried by Brighthouse Networks apparently.

I haven't been able to figure this out yet. I don't like it either. I've watched a couple of Ranger games on it (Rangers feed), and both times it's been with the video minus graphics and the radio guys doing it. Granted, I love the Rangers radio team much more than the television one, but I also like to have score, count, stats, and replays if I'm watching the game.
I've noticed quite a few feeds this year with the same thing. However, I also noticed that NESN and the White Sox on Comcast Sports Net have had the regular television feed up.
So my theory was that maybe they lost some kind of deal they had with FSN to carry the games with their feed and broadcasters.
...but then I just saw on here that apparently the YES Network is the same way. Are they owned by Fox at all? If so, that makes sense and I would be willing to bet that they lost their deal with FSN. If not, then I have no clue how to explain it.

He would be correct on this. The 2nd Yankees game had the exact same issue against the A's. The Mets have had the same thing on MLBTV via SNY. There has been this issue for some reason on MLBTV where this has been the case. Not all games have been like this, but some of them are.
As a test, I check through each game tonight and see if there is a graphics glitch. I blame MLBTV for this because they have added commercials produced by MLB.com into these games. So that tells me that they have been editing some things out of these games.

Yeah, pretty much. It was late when I typed it. ;)
But now that I've gone back and looked at some more games, I noticed that the Rangers game on Sunday was the normal FSN feed with graphics and TV personalities. So I have no clue how they decide which games to do the radio/raw video and which games have just regular TV.

Well, I bought it and there have been a few issues tonight. I started out with the Toronto feed, it became garbled for about 20 minutes, then the audio cut out completely, so I closed it and opened it back up a few minutes later and I started getting the YES feed. :dunno:
Did that happen to anyone else?
Hopefully this doesn't continue throughout the year, but even if it does it's minor compared to being able to watch the games whenever I want.

I can't get anything to come up at all tonight. None of the games. Anybody else having these kind of issues?
Tried my desktop, my laptop. Rebooted. Was fine Sunday.

Mine was down for about 20 minutes, then came back up as the YES feed.

The Toronto feed was all screwed up again today. The just switched over to YES....
I've been somewhat dissapointed with MLB.TV thus far this year.

knick23, can you send me an email and let me know how to get around the blackout thing as well? my email is laucb@bc.edu. I am currently studying in Tokyo and the black out all the live games if you reside in Japan. This has been really tough for me because I am die-hard Yankee fan. If some of you know some other ways, could you email me as well? Help would be much appreciated. Oh yeah, MLB.TV also charged me twice this month and before I left for Japan I kept calling them but the phone never worked for me. So basically I paid 30 bucks to watch archived games only.

Maybe someone can help me out with this, I tried looking it up on the mlb site, but couldn't find an answer. If I were to order mlb tv now, would I be charged the full monthly rate for April? Thanks

Naw, if you bought it today, April 21st, you'd have it until May 21st. But...since it's been so awful this year (I can't get today's game, and I know I'm not blacked out - add it to the list of problems) I wouldn't recommend it. If there's any other way you can get the games, I'd try that first.

Is Mlb.tv Mosaic available yet? It says it'll be available Mid-April, and there's a demo. They said a week ago that it would be available by the 20th. Is there something I'm missing?

It will available at the end of the month. I called and the gentleman confirmed it with me. They are working the bugs out.

It must be touch and go, because I haven't had a single problem with it...I suspect the Toronto feed problems were just that, problems out of mlbtv control - I say that because once they swapped to the YES feed it worked fine. I've had every game so far this year...

Hmmm...lucky for you! yeah...I'm pretty upset over it this year...a couple times, games just didn't work, for no apparent reason...they're not blacked out here, I know for certain. Additionally, sometimes the games feed just stops in the middle, and I have to log in again...does the same thing if I fastforward in an archived game. Sometimes the sound gets all weird on me - like that Toronto feed the other day, but its happened a few times.
I dont know what the deal is, but I'm pretty unhappy about it. But what can I do? It's the only way I can watch the games while I'm in the UK...and MLB never responds to customer support e-mails, or if they do, its 2, 3 weeks later. The phone number is always busy. Ahh... I wish they would get their act together.

When is MLB.TV Mosiac going to be available?
End of the month. Possible start of May 1st.
Seriously, what's the deal about Mosaic? When is it going to be available or is it ever! mlb.com is so piss poor!

What is MLB.TV Mosaic?
I wish there was an official answer as to why some games have a generic feed with no graphics and the radio team instead of tv announcers. It's really annoying not being able to see the score/pitch count/etc right on the screen.
I remember early in the season I'd sometimes get the YES feed with graphics and Kay and co., but never anymore.

I create my own mosaic, I use both firefox and IE, using the media player extension I export the Yankees game and watch the Jays in IE. If you decide to try and get around blackout restrictions (i know they say they're canceling subs) you can have multiple windows open with different games.
Legal Disclaimer: I personally do not use the aforementioned technique to get around the blackout restrictions, only to watch multiple games.

Hey, has anyone able to get the Media Player Connectivity FireFox extension to work on MLB.TV as of late? I'm trying to get it to work with Media Player Classic and WMP and I'm getting a "cannot render file" in Media Player Classic whenever I click on the embedded file that Media Player Connectivity brings up.

Why don't you like it? I like how you can follow all of the games at once through it and click on the one you want to listen to it. Also like the box score on the right side and bigger video feed.
knick, I was being serious. You can download it here: http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/subscriptions/mosaicbeta.jsp

The only thing I wish would be improved is the miniscreens, you cannot see anything in those. At least you can bring up that little menu that tells you who is pitching and batting. I think it's great being able to change the audio feed instantly back and forth. Overall it's good for a beta.

mosaic has a lot of problems right now. the video and sound desync all the time, and the quality of the stream is low. also, it warps the picture because of the top and bottom control bars. theres also no way to proxy mosaic, so we're stuck with blackouts. lots to be improved.

As for Mosaic, I haven't been able to get it to work right at all. When I do get in it says games are blacked out. Other times, I try to login it fails, says please try again then it says I've tried to login too many times. I'll just go back to the old way - but to be honest, that way seems to be getting worse too...video seems really really choppy - maybe I'm getting the problems everyone else has had with it - now it's found its way to me.

I have gotten the beta for Mosaic to work. But I really don't like how there is no control on putting teams on the three different levels. Thursday and Friday there were about 6 games being played when I was watching. But there were scattered over the three channels so you couldn't watch all 6 at once. mlb says this is a beta and you can't adjust that. Also, could they put a scoreboard option when you are watching one game, besides the info ticker at the bottom?

Wait is about 2-3 hours after the conclusion of the game. On Saturdays and ESPN Sunday Night, its not available until the next day.
