View Full Version : Mike and the Mad Dog 3/6/06

Did anyone get a chance to listen in today to M&MD at around 1 pm. MadDog was ripping the Yankee organization and PLAYERS (Arod / Jeter / Damon) for the sign that was posted appologizing for poor Spring Training performance due to the WBC. MadDog was trying to place the blame on Arod / Jeter / Damon for that sign because they chose to play in the competition. Mike was actually showing some intelligence on the topic and trying to explain that it's not the player's fault, or the Yankees', because they were giving their players the choice, and the players were getting heat from the Players union to participate.
I have to say I agree with Mike on this one, Russo was out of line. You can't deny the players a choice in the matter, it makes your organization too tightly wound. The blame for this falls completely on Selig, for giving them the choice in the first place. I believe the placement of that sign in Tampa was justifiable, and acceptable, as it provided an explanation to paying fans as why they will not be seeing the superstars of the team at spring training.
I also feel that this is garnering way too much attention, simply because it's the Yankees, and it is being viewed as an almost obvious attack on Bud Selig's authority within the league.
What do you all think about it?
The sign didn't mention anything about the Yanks ST performance. They had only played 2 games by the time it was put up. Russo is wrong once again.

Mike kept trying to correct him but Russo, being his loud, abnoxious, arrogant self, kept interrupting / overtalking him.
They don't have anything to talk about so they make up problems to bitch about.

I think it's pretty funny that whoever made that sign misspelled "yankees" (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/06/sports/baseball/06yankees.html). I think it's pretty sad that Mad Dog is on the air despite being a complete and utter idiot.

How that idiot (MadDog) ever got a radio gig in the NY area is beyond me! The guy's an absolute clown.

Maddog is completely correct.
It's the players fault they are not there for the spring training games not MLB or the commissioners. They had a choice to participate in the WBC.
This whole thing is stupid and i believe Michael Kay is to blame.

Are there any signs in the Baltimore Oriole ball park? They have the most players in the WBC. Does that mean they have the best team?
DontHateOnNumber2
03-06-06, 05:36 PM
That's senseless. The sign was most likely put up by some underling in the organization who keeps hearing complaints from casual fans wondering where Derek Jeter is. Blame the players for playing the WBC? HA! Blame Selig for the WBC and his attempt to make baseball appealing to more people all over the world.

I think the sign was stupid. If you are any kind of baseball fan, I think you know about the WBC. If you are any kind of Yankees fan, I think you know what Yankees are playing in the WBC and wont be in ST for 3 weeks.
Duh....

No, I don't think so. I think his father was/is a Yankee fan, so he rooted for the Giants to be rebellious.

I don't even take anything that these two say seriously. Whether they're Yankee fans or Met fans, it doesn't matter. The business that they are in thrives off of criticizing moves of the sports teams in town.

I don't know if it's my imagination but lately, these two have been constantly negative about so many things in the world of sports that I think they are looking to create controversy in their daily shows. They can both be arrogant and the way they treat callers is sometimes horrible! Can't they find anything positve lately?
Have any of you noticed that they never mention Michael Kay's name when YES is on the air after a Yankee telecast? Do you think they hate him or just don't want to admit that he does a pretty good job on the radio and is their competion?

Dont you think that its Mad Dogs job to get a rise out of the audience so they will listen longer and get a ridiculus amount of people to call in. Its all about the advertising dollars.

no games, no Yankeography, but hey memomorabila shows but no problems getting Mike and the Mad Dog :(

I have been waiting for some informed callers to trip Mad Dog up. I fully believe the man does not watch any Yankee games.
He walks into work, they give him a 2 minute highlight reel and synopsis and he takes it from there.
He might have changed but in the last 2 years I have limited myself tuning in.
"The Yanks have a Bully offense"
"Wright stinks and we all knew it"
Type of comments with no stat or scout analysis just makes for generalized criticism.
Tough on the ears. Imo

During the 2004 playoffs Kay talked on how Mike and Mad Dog refused to say Kay's name as hosting the Yankee pre and post game shows. YES had to step in and threaten court action because the advertising contract had specified Kay's name should be mentioned.
Kay went on about "I used to get along great with these guys when I was on the radio, stop by and chat but now they hate me since I am on ESPN radio." Kay also said Mike and Chris would say Kay was wrong on strategy but when Tim McCarver was on with them and said the same thing, they agreed with him. I does sound like success has gone to those two's heads, not that Kay is any kind of warm, modest person himself.

His Dad is a Yankee fan, and I think (not sure if this is the story) that his Dad didn't take him to games when he was a kid, so for some reason he latched onto the Giants. (I heard them hint at this a few times)

IIRC, when he was a kid, his family once stayed at the same hotel as the Giants and he met a lot of players, got autographs, etc.
I have to admit, if that happened to me when I was little, I may have done the same thing.
Thankfully, it didn't......

I like the story Francesa tells us having his father take him to Yankee Stadium for a doubleheader from the home in Long Beach, LI Yankees are losing big in second game, Mike begs his father to let him stay to see Mantle hit one more time. Finally Mantle gets up, strikes out on three pitches and the father was furious.."you made us stay to see him strike out???"
