I'm sure Snatch Catch will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are three ways we can keep a player.

1) Renew them for one season. After the season they must be either signed to a multi-year (2, 3 or 4 years) deal or released to the auction.

2) Sign them to a long term (2, 3 or 4 year) contract, where their salary goes up $4 for each of the years of the contract. When the contract expires, the player cannot be resigned, and is released to the auction.

3) Give a player an option contract, after which he returns to the auction.

Both (1) and (3) are single-year deals, but only after (1) can you sign a player to another contract.

Correct?

I didn't think we could do this...I thought it was option then release or sign to long term contract only 2 options for keepers.

This is how I understood it as well.

That's correct. If you pick up the one year option, you MUST release them after the season. You have no opportunity to sign them to a long term deal.

I also need absolute clarification on my FA pickups...are they $10 or the Auction price or whichever is greater? I think they're whichever is greater but want to be clear (especially for Giambi).

E- What do you think about waiving players that you don't want and not allowing anyone else to make pickups. It could clear a whole bunch of stuff off our rosters and make things easier to read (i.e. I waive Gagne, Bonds, etc. now, and start paring my roster down.)

I thought the rules last year also allowed for renewing a deal, one year at the current price?

That's fine with me. People may start dropping players they don't want to keep -- but nobody can pickup players until "Free For All Day".

Right, that's the option deal, at which point the player after the option year has to go back to the auction.

OK...so either renew for one year, then back into the FA pool, or sign to a 2-4 year deal.

Yep, that's it.
