Hello Everyone!
Alright - I'm in colllege - studying abroad in the UK for a semester. I'm planning on getting MLB.TV to watch Yankee games - seems like the best bet. But...I haven't watched much TV here, as I don't have a personal one in my room, due to the high costs of a TV license here. However, there is a public TV, and I know they have a satellite of some sort - which has American sports every once in a while. That leads me to my question - anyone know about how often Yankee games get put on TV here in the UK? Are they live ever? Does anyone know the name of the channel that usually has them? I'm not sure what kind of satellite we have here though. Any members live or have lived in the UK that can help me out? I'd love to watch my Yankees on a screen bigger than my computer every once in a while, with other people to help spread our love of the best baseball team in history! :D :D

Channel 5 (terrestrial) televises two live games a week, Wednesday and Sunday, from mid-May to the end of the season, and you usually get to see the Yankees probably half a dozen times during the regular season. Problem is the time difference! The games don't usually start until c. 1.00 a.m. BST, which, of course, means you miss out on your sleep! The second option for seeing live baseball is via the satellite channel "NASN" (North American Sports Network) which costs about $16 a month and is part of the "Sky" conglomeration. Live baseball features more or less every night, but I doubt you will find many places in the UK that feature it because with the exception of us die hard British fans, there is very little demand for American sports over here. My advice, in the event that you find the MLB coverage too restrictive, would be to "find a friend" who has a television license to catch the games on Channel 5 (even better if he/she possesses "Sky" and "NASN" in addition!!). The Channel 5 coverage is not bad at all, as the host, who is British, is a real enthusiast, whilst the resident baseball "expert", an American, also joins in the banter. It's a must for those who can afford to miss their sleep but tough for an old duffer like me!

I hope that you find this helpful. Enjoy your stay over here because although this is merely a poxy little island in the middle of the Atlantic, with crappy weather thrown in for free, most of us natives are pretty easy to get along with! Hey, you might even get to like cricket!! ;)

Im currently stationed in Korea and have somewhat of the same problem. Except lucky for me most games start at 9am and I start work at 12pm. Anyway, I just plan on hooking my laptop up to my TV via s-video, not the best quality but it works. Hope this helps.

ESPN Global shows baseball games all the time. Last year I was working in Australia and saw a few games. A lot of the games are the braves on TNT, but you should definately get every redsox yankee game. I would also do a google search for Ex-Pats bars in the UK, thats how I found the bar in Sydney that showed Yankee redsox games.

Where in the UK are you? When I was stuyding abroad, I made a pit stop in London and found an American sports bar. I don't remember the name (mind you, this was in 2000), and it might not even be there today, but it is worth checking out. It was right off of Piccadilly Circus. I was able to watch the 2000 World Series live. The bar had some sort of special licence to stay open past closing time to show it. All I remember was that it was filled with Mets and Yankees fans, and lots of English birds :)

Hey thanks guys for all the tips - Nashwan - I think we do get the NASN station here in my residence, but I'll have to double check - I've been seeing SKY channels, so I'm pretty sure. In any event, I'll probably be watching most of the games on MLB.TV...and channel surfing every once in a while, seeing if any of the games are on TV. It's going to be a great spring watching these games in the middle of the night!! ;)

In the meanwhile...I'm trying to learn more about soccer - football...and figure out how the heck you play rugby...

Rugby is the sh*t. I got into it out where you are, and it is a ton of fun.

I"m in the same boat, may have to get a TV card so I can do the S-video out thing, but was planning on just watching on my desktop...time difference makes it hard...it was strange being at work and seeing the White Sox celebrate the World Series...I guess on the weekends it'll be a little easier. At least we can watch Friday and Saturday games on Saturday and Sunday morning - and have the rest of the day to do whatever.....

Sounds promising that at least you've got "Sky" in the house. Subscription to "NASN" is over and above what you pay for any of the "Sky" packages - I would have got "NASN" a few years ago, but the time difference, which is a real pain in the arse, would mean that I would only get to see weekend games. Do tune into Channel 5 when they start their baseball coverage (normally mid-May) because it's real fun programme and with two "free" games a week, including the Yankees now and again, there's little to complain about other than lack of sleep!

Football (soccer) is dead easy to follow, but Rugby (Union) is a whole different animal. A piece of advice: Don't try to understand the rules because you would need to be akin to a Philadelphia lawyer to do so! Just follow the basics and the remainder will eventually fall into some sort of place. Rugby (League) is far easier to follow because there are no line-outs, scrums don't matter and each team is allowed to keep the ball for six tackles unless they happen to fumble the ball or kick it away. Rugby (League) is televised live on "Sky" on Friday (8.00 p.m) and Saturday (6.00 p.m.) nights and is great entertainment. One of the best things about the sports coverage over here is that you are not plagued with television commercials as you are in the States: if you are watching soccer, you will get your 45 minutes each way, with commericals only featured at half-time and the same with rugby (40 minutes per half).

Will you be here for the summer? If so, the delights of cricket await you! If you find rugby a bit bewildering, wait till someone asks you what you think of the lbw (leg before wicket) rule!! Happy days!

Once you get it you will love it. You just need to follow the ABC rule:

Anyone But Chelsea. :D
