Not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but was in Vegas and bumped into Jim Edmonds (who is a friend of a friend) so had a beer with him (and he was totally cool, not like "get the hell away from me"). Two points: he really wanted to play for the Yanks when it looked like we might get him and was pretty disappointed when it fell through. Second, I asked him if he knew Johnny Damon pretty well. Answer, yeah. My question, are we going to get our money's worth. He just laughed. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Ended the conversation with his question: "who would you rather have, me or Damon in CF?" My answer was truthful--him. I told him I'd give old George a call and he could play RF and Sheff could DH. Said his arm wouldn't let him at his age and he's retiring at the end of his contract any way. Good guy.
Sour grapes, maybe? :dunno:

I think it was years ago, when he was with the Angles. It may have been when he was a free agent before he went to the Cardinals.
Think there was a rumor of a trade just before the Damon signing....

Considering the Cards would probably want Cano/Wang and Hughes at least, I doubt much was discussed.

Ha Ha--it was way back when in his pre-Cardinal days. He definitely seemed down about it. Said who the hell wouldn't want to play for us. Then he remembered he's ridiculously rich and a had table of hotties with him and I think he cheered right back up

By the way, not sure if my original post made it sound like Jim was talking smack about Damon--he wasn't at all. I just think he was implying that Damon might not quite be worth the 52M, that's all.

We almost got him right before he gpt traded to St. Louis, but if I remember correctly, Cashman balked when the Angels asked for both Ed Yarnell and Rickey Ledee in return. We turned down the same trade for Jason Schmidt with Pittsburgh as well. Good thing we kept Yarnell and Ledee instead of getting one of those guys.

So wait, let me get this straight.
You talked to Jim Edmonds
He doesn't think we're getting out moneys worth with Damon
This was when he was an Angel
Edmonds became a Cardinal in March of 2000
Jim Edmonds commented on a signing 5 years before it happened.

I bumped into Steve Balboni at Subway the other day. After he finished putting the lettuce on my sub he told me Johnny Damon doesn't deserve the money because one time when "Bye-Bye" went to a Damon autograph signing, he wouldn't sign his man-boob.

Um, no.
I saw Jim on Saturday night. We talked about the near trade back during his Angel's days. We also talked about the Damon signing. But it makes a lot more sense if you intepret it as my talking to him 5 years ago about signings that wouldn't take place until well in the future and then my bringing it up now. In fact, let's run with that one.

Not to be mean, but people asking them about baseball stuff all the time is why they don't want to talk to anyone.
How would you feel if you went out for a few brews with the guys and all anyone wants to talk about is how many reports you wrote last week?

It's a 24/7/365 job. Even if you make a million a week, you have to be off the clock some time.
If no other reason, it makes the mutual friend look bad. If a mutual friend introduces you, you're representing that friend, which means no fanboy questions.
Of course, I'm on the boat that doubts that this even happened.

They're in the public eye. They're celebrities. Unless you're willing to answer questions, you shouldn't be there. Plus, generally, it's what they know best. That's what people will talk about. I'm not gonna go up to Jim Edmonds and ask him what type of car seat I should use for my son or something.

Mutual friend wasn't there. But he's a good friend of both of ours so I went up to Jim and introduced myself. Talked a bit about the friend, but of course I had to get a baseball question or two in there. So sue me.

He must have us mixed up
This post highlights a real problem on this board. If an average fan has a run in with a player and tells us about it, no one believes him. Or if a regular guy hears something about a trade, everyone jumps all over him for a "link". But we have no way of confirming the random events/rumors that are written by beat writers in those links, so why are they anymore reliable than a guy on this board? I don't know this poster at all, but I'm willing to bet his story is more reliable than anything Gammons has written in the last year.
Think there was a rumor of a trade just before the Damon signing....
Yea. George REALLY wanted him, but there was no room with Bernie there. (Remember reading about it in Buster Olney's book)

Thanks, appreciate it, but since Gammons hasn't written anything worth reading in the last decade or so, I guess it isn't a huge vote of confidence.

Not to be mean, but people asking them about baseball stuff all the time is why they don't want to talk to anyone.Which is something that I try to keep in mind. On the rare occassion when I'm around someone well-known I try to talk to them about other, everyday things rather than focus completely on what they do since that's something they talk about all the time. Not to mention it avoids awkwardness in relation to being asked about topics they might not want to discuss with a fan.

Its not even about not believing the poster. Some people like to draw attention to themselves and they do that by raining on other people's parades. Some just can't handle the fact that a poster met Jim Edmonds and had a beer with him. Its sad.

That sounds like a pretty cool experience. The closest I've ever been to a major leaguer is about 8 feet away from Derek Jeter at Spring Training. Next time I'm going hella early to get some autographs and pics with the players. Though him retiring kind of caught me by surprise, he just seems like a guy that wouldn't want to stop playing the game.

I've walked by and eaten at restaurants with ball-players before. Two years ago in Las Vegas I was walking and Richie Sexson walked right by. About 6 years ago in Tampa I was in Ybor City and walked right by Derek Jeter. On that same trip went to a restaurant called "Bahama Breeze" and two tables over was Jeff Nelson. As for when to approach them. I would NEVER even say hello to them when they are eating. If I heard of an athlete being "rude" and find out it was because someone asked for an autograph just as he put a mouthful of linguini in his mouth, I'd applaud the athlete for restraint in not popping the jerk. But in an appropriate setting and if the athlete is willing I don't see a problem with asking a few questions. And if the player sits down at the bar you are at and starts talking, well then he's there to chat.
