Hello all my hockey fans,

If you wanna post anything Olympic Ice hockey in Torino: men's and women's Olympic Ice Hockey coverage, please do so here.

You can also rant about the U.S. team in the Original U.S. Hockey team thread.

I dont expect the US to medal....it would be a big surprise if they did.

I will be really rooting hard for the Czechs (six Rangers on the team) and the Swedes (Lundqvist will be in goal). Of course....as long as anyone but Canada wins, I'll be happy.

No way Canada (mens) doesn't medal like some of you guys are predicting. They will get nothing less than silver imo, and gold is as close to being a given as possible. :barf: I would be more than happy with the Czech's or Sweden winning, but I would LOVE to see Sweden win and Lundqvist be the goalie that does it.

I refuse to make a prediction.

Women's Tournament
Gold: Canada
Silver: U.S.
Bronze: Sweden

Ugh, they cannot lose to those bitches again!

Ugh, they cannot lose to those bitches again!

Don't worry. I changed my pick to U.S.

The U.S. don't have Cammi Granato on the team for the Turin Olympics.
Canada has scoring forward Hayley Wickenheiser leading the Canucks.

However, the U.S. won the last two of the four matches against the Canadians including a game on New Year's day against Winnipeg.

So, it will be very interesting between the Americans and Canadians in women's ice hockey.

I may be in the minority here....but I like the Czechs and Swedes alot more then Canada right now.

Sweden is a damn good team....remember they torched Canada the one time they played them in the 02 Olympics. Sweden arguably was the best team, but Salo fell apart in the Belarus game. Lundqvist certainly wont be doing that.

Im always partial to the teams with the hot/best goaltenders. And what goalies have been better this year then Hasek and Lundy??

I'm in the same boat as you are. However, Sweden's stock in my book has gone down with Naslund back out, and it appears Forsberg will do the same. If that is the case, then I think the Czech Republic would be the fave. And yes, having hot goalies for both Sverige and Česká republika will be very good.

Anyone can win this tournament out of Sweden, Russia, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland and USA. You are correct that a hot goaltender can make all the difference. Just look at the Czech Republic in 1998.

I think the reason Canada is favoured is (and I may be biased here) simply due to depth. Niedermeyer out? We replace him with Bouwmeester. If Lecavalier gets hurt in the first game, Spezza or Staal slips into the lineup. Due to the sheer number of elite Canadian players, it gives Canada an advantage.

Tomas Kaberle is a top two defenceman on the Czech team. I watch every Leafs game, and I am not comfortable with him being a top two defenceman on the Leafs. Brian McCabe, his partner in Toronto, and arguably a better player, will be a fifth or sixth defenceman on the Canadian team. Sami Kappanen just went down for the Fins, and they have replaced him with Ville Niemeanan (sp), a player that I really like, but wouldn't count on to bring home a gold medal.

I don't mean this to sound at all arrogant, its just the reason why I think Canada has an advantage and is often picked to win the tournament. Brodeur doesn't have to play lights out for Canada to win, whereas several other teams will have to count on a hot goalie to win the gold.

However, all the depth in the world can't beat Dominik Hasek when he's on his game, and Olaf Kolzig can in all reality steal a quarterfinal game for the Germans. That is why even though Canada looks great on paper, and I hope they win, I won't make any predictions on who wins the gold. Anything can happen in a one-game elimination tournament.

In the women's it could be Canada vs. U.S. in the Gold Medal game, but Sweden and Finland on any given day can give those two a tough time or maybe a win that could replace one or both teams in the Gold Medal Game.

One the men's side, Canada has the edge because of they have the depth. Czech Republic, Sweden, and Russia are also Gold Medal favorites. The U.S. are underdogs, but on any given day, the underdogs do have their day in the sunshine.

I watched some of this Canada-Russia women's game....and its a complete joke. Canada with a 6-0 lead after the 1st period!! These games are so non-competitive its sad.

If the IOC can get rid of softball in the Summer games...because the USA dominates, wins every game 15-0, and its only competition is China...why does the IOC allow women's hockey to continue, when its obvious there is ZERO competition in the sport outside of Canada-USA??

Im sorry...but when a hockey team is winning games 16-0 and outshooting their opponents 57-9...then that sport shouldnt be in the Olympics.

Canada and the U.S. are the two best teams in Women's Ice Hockey. A lot of people ask "Will the NHL creates a Women's NHL"? The problem is that Canada and the U.S. dominate women's ice hockey.

It takes a win from either the Swedish or Finnish women against one or even both teams in the semifinals to put theirselves on the map along with Canada and the U.S. in Women's Ice Hockey.

As much as I love watching the American team, I'm starting to agree. I'm just really starting to get bored with the games. How fun is a hockey tournament when all everyone is thinking is, I wish these games would be over so we can get to the gold medal game. Because we all know every year it's going to be USA/Canada. No, it's not, but if he's the one playing the best right now you have to go with him I guess. Would it be crazy to try and get all three into a game in the beginning? Didn't Canada do that in 2002?

I see your point. I did watch the game and I did see some sloppiness and quite a few mistakes, but I think they were, to an extent, playing to the level of their opponent. Canada really took their foot off the gas in the third period. I think jet lag and not wanting to get injured in a supposedly "easy" game were factors as well. I would imagine if Canada had played Finland today we would have seen a different sort of effort.

I also watched the Czech game this morning, and they didn't look to be at the top of their game either. I didn't see the Russia game, so I don't know how well they played in their loss to Slovakia. I don't think we'll really be able to judge these teams properly until the end of the prelim round, or the start of the medal round.

By the way, has anyone else noticed how low the glass around the boards is? So many pucks are going out of play.

The three teams that I wouldn't want to face in the first game would be Slovakia, Germany and Latvia. Supposedly lesser teams that could easily pull off an upset, especially in the first game of a tournament when players, particularly North Americans, are getting used to each other and the larger ice.

However, there's still another period to play. And four more prelim games. Lots of time to fix things. I'm still hoping for a Canada v USA final.

Latvia hand nothing to lose against the U.S. They gave up a lot of shots, but they kept working and working and almost beat the U.S.

Don Waddell, are you taking notes? U.S. has to play very well today with a win, or it will be mayhem.

just got home from work, and absolutely stunned that the Czechs lost to Switzerland. How did that happen?? unbelievable.

Looks like Russia dominated Sweden too...sorry to see my boy Lundqvist get lit up for 5 goals against the Russians, although since I didnt see the game I cant say if Lundy had an off-night, or was the Swedish defense non-existant in front of him.

Sweden was outhit and was burned on a lot of odd-man rushes by Russia.

Swiss Goalie David Aebischer had 40 saves on 42 shots. The Swiss also scored first against the Czechs. Dominik Hasek will test out his injured hamstring on Thursday.

I know Gionta is on NJ, so I'm suppose to "hate" him...but I must admit, I love his game. What he lacks in size, he makes up for with guts and determination. A 5'9 guy who routinely out physicals guys 4-5 inches taller and 30-40 pounds heavier. Not afraid to park himself in front of the net and take all the abuse. I mean we see ALOT of guys in the NHL who are taller and heavier...who are afraid to sit in front of the net.

Its cool to get a chance to root for him for a few weeks....then its back to hating him

Great game so far for the USA. Hopefully DiPietro can get into one of his hot streaks for this tournemant. Regarding Gionta, the guy has a ton of heart. You should have seen him battle Chara, it was insanely funny. Gionta is the anti-Viktor Kozlov.

So what does everyone think so far? Has anyone reconsidered their choice of favourites? After the results of the last two days I think its impossible to pick a winner. No one team looks dominant, and the Slovaks and Swiss have proven that anything can happen. I'm looking forward to the rest of the games, especially as the quality of hockey is bound to improve with teams getting used to each other.

I would agree....I thought the Swedes and Czechs would have a chance, but the Czechs DO NOT look good so far. Barely beat Germany, and lost to the Swiss. They are playing very uninspired hockey, and you wonder if the loss of Hasek took away some kind of mental edge they had or something. Sweden got schooled by a Russia team that looked bad against Slovakia.

Slovakia looks good so far, but they dont have enough to win this tournament.

Might as well give Canada the gold now :(

As much as I hope you are both right, I wouldn't go handing out any medals yet. Canada has done what they have had to do so far, but they haven't really faced quality opposition yet. The way I see it, Canada will face either Russia, Sweden, USA, or Slovakia in the quarterfinals. Any one of those teams can beat Canada in a one game elimination. I can see anything happening - short of Kazahkstan or Italy winning gold - the way the results of this tournament have gone so far.

Deep down I think ALR83 is trying to jinx Canada with some sort of reverse psychology. :P

 Honestly I mean it though. I just don't see anyone beating them. I thought (and hoped) the Czech's would be able to, but like what has already been said they don't look good so far. And Hasek being hurt doesn't help. I also thought (and again hoped) maybe even Sweden, but I can't even buy that one anymore. No one is beating Canada. Makes me kinda sick, and prevents me from really enjoying these games a little bit, but whatever.

First of all, I refuse to ever concede anything to the Canadians.

I'd not count out the Czechs yet, though it'll be a tough ride for them. Vokoun looked unimpressive against the Swiss

If DiPietro plays the rest of the tournament as well as he played today (yesterday?), the US could have a chance. That is, if they can score once in a while.

Finland have performed well against a couple of, well, bad teams, impressive considering the six or seven players lost to injury. Of course I'm partial to them being a Stars fan, but I don't think the the defense or the goaltending will hold up enough to contend for gold or silver. (Slovakia has a similar problem.)

Sweden could get a big boost if Forsberg returns, also, though they looked simply uninspired against Russia. Stick a fork in em.

Prediction after 2 games: Canada-Russia-Finland, with US fourth. Dark horse: Switzerland (ha).

2-2 between Sweden and USA halfway through the second in the women's semifinal. The US has carried the game, but a few sloppy plays in their own end have cost them two goals. The Swedish goalie is playing well, but I think the quality of the US will be too much for her in the end and we'll get to see the US/Canada final that I'm sure we all want to see.
