Is this true? Boy, talk about a rough crowd. The guy hasn't played one inning as a Yankee yet and he is getting the shaft.

Hockey fans, what do you expect. They dont know he's a yankee yet

Maybe a lot of them were Met fans.

I don't think there is anything wrong with fans booing Johnny Damon (now or on Opening Day). I could be wrong, but I don't think Damon is the kind of player that will be bothered by what the fans think of him.

Tino got booed in 1996 too, and still things turned out pretty good for him and the Yankees. Hope the same thing happens with Damon. Boo him until he's earned it, then cheer him after he helps you win.

I'd rather cheer him until he earns the boos.

I think I read somewhere he was booed because there was stubble on his face, not because of who he is. I also heard there were cheers mixed in. I think the boos were more of a joke than anything else.

I won't boo him on Opening Day...unless he's 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts.

He's coming from the Red Sox so he's got to earn the cheers. Not the other way around.

This is a Red Sox guy from the 2004 Championship team who said that he'd never play for the Yankees and did so for the money.

If he's done anything to earn a reaction one way or the other, it's the boos that he's earned.

it was mets fans. people assume mets and jets fans are always islanders and nets fans. not if they dont live in long island or jersey.

They should be booed for going to the Red Sox, not coming from there.

So basically, Flaherty should be booed.

But the whole "I'll never play for the Yankees" thing earns him serious negative points.

I'm not saying he should be booed, but he's got to earn the cheers coming here. Pretty much just like every other player that comes here, but especially for Sox players.

As for Flaherty, we didn't want him back and I think most Yankee fans would have wanted Flaherty to go to the Sox.

It's a good thing they don't open in YS.

Since Damon is probably the worst baseball player on opening day.

It shouldn't be that way, really. But whatever.

As for Flash, I was joking. He's a nice enough guy, he shouldn't be booed.

Well, that's the way it is. Not saying I'm going to boo him (I'm not), but I don't care if others do. Especially at a Rangers game - when it is a completely different set of rules.

Hehe... this is getting existential. Its time for Eric Van to make a formula about it so that we finally know for sure that the Red Sox will win.

Was a poll taken after the game asking people A) Were you booing B) What were you booing at C) was it a sarcastic boo

If not, why would an author wenture to guess?

I was at this game (it was the Saturday afternoon game against the Penguins)

there were alot of cheers mixed in....although I would say it was 65-35 in favor of boos. I just took it as there are alot of non-Yankee fans in the crowd. I went with 3 of my friends, and they are all Mets fans....so they booed him.

I heard it was a mix of boos and cheers.

Although, when they showed Tiki on the screen at the same game, apparently the place erupted in cheer.

Damon said he already felt like a Yankee. Some fans booed him at a Rangers game Saturday, but Damon said he would win them over soon.

"I know I won't be accepted by them until I start playing well," Damon said. "If I play well, they're going to accept me." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/01/sports/baseball/01damon.html?pagewanted=all

Strange enough, it seems to hold up. By my math he's 4 for 37 with 2 RBI, 1 R and 0 XBH in 9 opening days.

Maybe we should let Bernie start in CF for the opener. ;)

Why?? This makes no sense whatsoever. The 2006 season opener is in Oakland. He's been out of Oakland for years. All the Yanks will get booed there anyway, as they would in any away park. If you're saying he's going to get booed "a lot" (as you say) at the YS home opener, in his first game as a Yankee, you've probably never been to YS.

1. Wasn't talking about Oakland. Never talked about Oakland. Why would I talk about what fans in another city who root for another team do? If you said Boston......you'd be close.

2. No, but I know Yankee fans, and if you think 50,000 will just cheer him like a returning war hero, that's putting a lot of faith in a bunch of strangers. He's going to get booed.

The way I see it, Damon being a Red Sock ended the second free agency hit. So shut your pie holes and be glad we got a CF who can hit and field decently.

I don't think that there is any Yankee player who gets cheered by all 56,000 fans. Or any player with any team, for that matter. Somehow, someway, there are fans that don't take a liking to a player regardless of who he is. 56,000 people can't agree on everything.

But to expect Yankees fans to significantly boo Damon or boo him "a lot" (as you said) in his first Yankee game is beyond ridiculous. There is no such outcry in NY. A majority of Yankees fans are thrilled that CF was addressed with the best player available, no less. If you're making a judgment call based on what NYYxyz69 is saying in NYYFans about his dislike for the Damon signing, you're being misguided.

Booing players is stupid, like the players really give a sh*t anyway. They go home to their supermodel girlfriends and million dollar mansions.

Plus, when I'm at games and I see players swinging at dirt when they're down late in the game, I'm too pissed off to boo.

personally, i wouldnt boo damon or any yankee on opening day...its a new season and theres no way you can judge a player before they havent even played a game yet...youve got to give players time

Booing ruined Mantle's, Reggie's and Ted Williams' careers. Didn't you know that?
