During my wife's first sonogram this week the doctor tells us we have a suprise. Twins!!

I'm so numb to this I can't even tell if I'm nervous yet. maybe I am, I dunno.... I guess.

Two of everything!

I'm happy as hell, but I just can't believe it.

Yikes! That is quite the surprise. The idea of having twins always terrified me and I'm grateful I didn't have them, but all of the people I know who have had twins have done great. The infancy period is quite challenging, so hopefully you guys will have help. After they're older, though, it's nice because they each have a ready-made playmate which makes life easier for mom and dad!

Congrats and best wishes, Steve! Don't get overly over-wrought. Things have a way of working out. And don't be afraid to ask others for help!

Twins run in my family as well, on both sides. I have twin cousins on my dad's side, and my mom's brother didn't have kids and my parents didn't have twins, so it's down to us kids to see who has the twins gene.

Twins run in my family as well, on both sides. I have twin cousins on my dad's side, and my mom's brother didn't have kids and my parents didn't have twins, so it's down to us kids to see who has the twins gene.

Was it your father's sister or sister-in-law who had the twins? It's actually a tendency to produce multiple eggs that's inherited, so if it was your dad's sister-in-law, then it wouldn't be inherited in your family.

http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Twins_identical_and_fraternal?open

"Factors that increase the odds of having twins

Some women are more likely than others to give birth to twins. The factors that increase the odds include:

Advancing age of the mother - women in their 30s and 40s have higher levels of the sex hormone oestrogen than younger women, which means their ovaries are stimulated to produce more than one egg at a time.
Number of previous pregnancies - the greater the number of pregnancies a woman has already had, the higher her odds of conceiving twins.
Heredity - a woman is more likely to conceive fraternal twins if she is a fraternal twin, has already had fraternal twins, or has siblings who are fraternal twins.
Race - Black African women have the highest incidence of twins, while Asian women have the lowest.
Assisted reproductive techniques - many procedures rely on stimulating the ovaries with fertility drugs to produce eggs and, often, several eggs are released per ovulation."

"Having them in the family" doesn't seem to increase the likelihood of having them unless a woman is a twin herself, has already had fraternal twins, or has siblings that are fraternal twins.

Make sure you raise em right with a lot of Yankees and Star Wars. ;)Actually we spoke about this. I am hell-bent on not dressing them and treating them like the same person. They need to have their own personalities and interests. I don't care how cute it is to do the twin thing.

my solution? one gets a home yankees jersey, the other one gets the away. :D

But the Yankees thing won't be a problem, and I don't think Star Wars will. We're gonna have a music clash. Their mom is a Grateful Dead/Skynyrd type person and I'm Tool/Pantera. That will be a battle.

Agreed though. My brother and I, though we're not twins, often get grouped together even though we're somewhat different. It's definitley annoying.

I bet you're daughter is excited to have some younger siblings soon.I've always tried to bring my daughter up to know she doesn't have to be like anyone else, care what anyone thinks or let anyone tell her how she should act/dress, etc. Do what she likes, in the end, you're happier that way. It's important to me that we bring them up that way. No pressure to compete with the other or be lumped together with the other. Twins or not, they are individuals.

She's pretty excited. She's a wonderful older sister. Her mom had a baby 2 years ago so she's been here before. Good thing for me, in like 2 years I have instant babysitter!

Congratulations to you and the missus, and best of health to the twins. To me, the hardest part , once our twins arrived (we already had 2 young girls) was loss of sleep, and always ( it seemed) changing diapers :D You will find out that you can even change diapers with your eyes closed :D I still haven't got over that, probably because we we had 3 more after the boys. It just continued. :D

Reading the thread, it looks as if you may be getting some help, though. I'm sure it was nice to hear that so many folks want to help you once the twins arrive. You may want to take them up on it. I say that because for the first several months, it may seem that the babies only want to be fed at night, - at least it seemed that way with our guys :D - so why not ask your friends if they wouldn't mind spending a night or two feeding the babies. :). This way, you both can catch up on your sleep - or "doing" what got you here in the first place, :)

My brothers are the most important people in my life, they're 13 now and they were born eight weeks immature they are honestly, million dollar babies.

Anyways, congrats to you. Twins are amazing. :)

Watch middle names as well my mother's name was Hilda Baer and her middle name was Rose. Hilda Rose Baer as in Hilda Rose Bare and the kids used to tease her about standing up naked.

Stacey is a very difficult name to pronouce. At the strip club I frequent nightly, theres these triplets named Tasty, Stacey and Casey, so its like having a mouth full of marbles while trying to pronounce african names

Congratulations Steve!!!

My wife and I have twins, a boy and a girl.

The first six months were tough because of the feedings at night. The important thing is to keep them on the same schedule. Also, don't plan any projects around the house. Just keep the routine going. There are going to be days where it feels like you're caught in a continuous four-hour loop and that's because... well you are.

Invest in a CostCo card or whatever warehouse-type store is there. It will pay for itself in Enfamil in about two weeks.

Get lots of bottles. And pillows.

If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know.

One funny story when my wife was pregnant. She had heard about "Twins" magazine. One night, she sent me out to find a copy. I went everywhere. Finally, I ended up at a WaldenBooks or something in a mall. I couldn't find it, so I gave in and asked this cute little high school girl behind the counter if she could look up and see if a magazine named "Twins" exists. About thirty seconds later, she turns beet red and looks me and says, "You'll have to try an adult book store for that sir."

My wife still laughs at that story.

Anyway, congratulations and good luck.

I'm very happy for you and your wife.

Congratulations Steve! My Dad was a twin and my brother had twin daughters who are now 25 years old. You'll be amazed at how twins grow and develop together. My nieces had their own language when they started to talk. They would speak gibberish but could understand each other perfectly.

Also there was a time when one of them lost a dollar bill and the other ripped hers in half to give to her sister. They were only about 2 or 3 years old at the time.

No problem.

One other thing...car seats. If you have two vehicles, try to get the car seats that have bases that you can buy separately. It will save you from having to buy two sets of car seats.

And cop as many newborn diapers from the hospital that you can. Twins tend to be smaller and take longer to get into the normal size 1's.

If your wife delivers early, don't freak out. For some reason twins are better equipped to handle premature births that single births.

And don't be shy about going to the doctor for the simplest of pains. My wife had to be disabled at Week 24.

If you need any advice, PM me.

Now the maternity styles are tight. When I was pregnant with my kids, everything was oversized. I once wore a sweatshirt that was a little snug on my belly and a woman I worked with told me it was time to buy some maternity clothes.

That's pretty nervy of her. People shouldn't say things like that. I hear it all the time. Just shut up.

A friend of mine has a daughter who is 15 and anorexic. She was trying on bathing suits and some woman in the store went on and on how skinny she was and how she needs to start eating etc. Not good to say to someone who obviously has a problem.

Steve,
How is your wife feeling? That's so cool to be expecting twins. She's feeling better because the babies dropped a bit so she can breath easier. But she cannot wait to get them out. She's going insane with boredom and not being able to ever be comfortable. I feel so terrible for her.... but it's almost over. 2 more weeks.

yeah, I thought it was nervy of her too. Especially since we didn't have much money back then. So I told her I would be happy to buy some maternity clothes if she wanted to pay for them. That pretty much shut her up.

That's terrible about the woman making the comment to the anorexic girl. People just don't think sometimes.

Awesome!! Are they making her have the c-section, or did she choose it? I know when my time comes, I'll tell them to numb me up and cut me open. I don't want to deal with labor!

At any rate, congratulations! That is great news! I'm sure you guys (especially her! ;) ) can't wait to meet them! :gulp:

You'd rather choose to have major surgery?
I had an emergency C-section with my first, so I had to deal with all the labor (17 hours) AND the surgery. My second was natural...no drugs at all. I was very fortunate I was able to deliver that way after the section. I'd pick the natural way again.

I realize some people have no choice (twins are commonly delivered by C-section, or there are medical reasons for one) but to choose a section just to avoid the pain of labor and birth, I don't understand.

You can never be too careful these days where eating disorders are concerned. It's a shame that people offer their two cents and it's even more offensive when it is strangers.

In talking to my friend who just had twins in April, one of your biggest early challenges will be to get both of them on the same feeding/sleeping schedule. I know the first few weeks when they weren't it was a bit tough.

Hey, as long as they get here healthy and your wife is healthy, it doesn't matter how they get here, right? These next two weeks will go by so fast for you...but probably not fast enough for her! Enjoy your sleep while you still have the chance; you don't have much longer! :)

Is your daughter going to get to be at the hospital with you guys? 11-years-old is the perfect age to help out with the babies. Girls that age adore babies. I loved helping to take care of my cousins and second-cousins when I was about her age. They're old enough to help out and not be in the way, but not so old that they think they're too cool to help out!

best of luck to you, Hitman........I have 9 month old twins myself. If you listen to any advice whatsoever, (and believe me, you'll get a ton:D ).....just try your best to keep them on a pretty strict schedule. It can be hard, but after a few months it'll be much easier. My babies pretty much know when they're going to eat, nap, and sleep, and 90% of the time, it goes smoothly.

If you think you have a spacious apartment now, just wait......it took us all of six months to figure out we needed a bigger place:P

My wife had a c-sec as well, as our little boy was not in the right position. In a way, it made it easier because we knew right when it was happening.

Anyway, best of luck to you, your wife, and your babies. It is going to change your world dramtically, but believe me, it's probably the best change you'll ever expereince. There's absolutely nothing comparable to seeing your children for the first time, imo.
