Anyone picked up any good new music lately?

Went on a bit of a tear lately on allofmp3.com and snagged the following:

- Arctic Monkeys- these guys are gonna be hot sh1t this summer, I can already tell after a few listens through the album. they're just regular dudes singing about regular things rather than the whiny woe-is-our-world stuff you're hearing from a lot of their counterparts these days
- DJ Muggs vs GZA "Grandmaster"- the Cypress Hill DJ paired with GZA from the Wu, interesting stuff because the production is completely unique and totally different from what you'd expect if you've heard Liquid Swords.
- Wu-Tang Meets Indie Culture- another random matchup that works. a bunch of raps by underground-type guys, paired with Wu (Dreddie Kruger) beats. This one's gonna get heavy play in the ol' Ipod.
- MF Doom and Danger Mouse "Danger Doom"- this album is inspired by Adult Swim from the Cartoon Network. I don't watch that very often so I'm missing out on some of the references but it's catchy as hell, and I wanted to see what Danger was getting into after the Grey Album
- Thievery Corp "Cosmic Game"- Saw these guys spin at their club in DC last weekend, and finally got around to getting one of their albums. It's pretty funky, down-tempo kind of stuff. Good background music for when you have people over for a couple of cocktails, grown-up style (not that I do that too often, but hey)

I'm looking fwd to the Curious George sdtk by Jack Johnson, as well as Idlewild by Outkast. Anything else on the horizon people are anticipating?

I'm loving the Arctic Monkeys as well. I got a CD of their's from their record company a month or so ago and I've been playing it a lot. I'm looking foward to the actual album. The CD I got has mostly demos.

I got the new Strokes cd the other day. I really hated their first one because the guy sounded like he was singing into a megaphone, but this one is really good. I recommend it.

Love the Arctic Monkeys. "Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts" is a cool tune.

I too am looking forward to the new Jack Johnson...he covered "We're Going To Be Friends", by the White Stripes, which is one of my favorite tunes.

I've enjoyed DJ Muggs vs. GZA so far (my fav. tracks are Exploitation of Mistakes, All in Together Now, and Unstoppable Threats). I have yet to get the Wu meets Indie Culture album, heard it's good though.

I'm not sure of what's on the horizon but I'm interested in "Killa Season" (out in Feb) now that I've heard Cam'ron's two jabs at Jay-Z. You either like Cam'ron or you don't I guess, I find him to be entertaining. Also would like to check out the new Thievery Corporation stuff. Didn't know there was a new Strokes CD out, gotta check that too.

This is the iTunes library I have so far with my girlfriend...So far about 6200 songs but I have yet to input about 3000+ more songs. Nothing really new here but maybe you see some things like "oh sh*t I don't have that".

It's a Russian site, and I don't fully know the deal (or if I should even have brought it up). But songs are dirt cheap, and priced according to length (0.05 to 0.15 roughly). I think the deal is you are actually paying for the bandwidth, not the song itself. I like it because you can encode the songs into whatever quality and file format you like.

Ahhh ok thanks.

Yeah I hear you, everyone's a bit paranoid of the RIAA and its' lawyers . However, they can kiss my ass, because I had 300 CD's stolen out of my car at school a few years ago...I had left em in the trunk by accident, I hope whoever did that sh*t dies a slow painful death. So yeah, 300 CD's at a rather conservative estimate of 12.99 to 14.99 each is $3900-4500 that I had spent over my lifetime ... so please forgive me if sometimes I don't feel like paying .99 cents to get a song from iTunes, usually a song that I had already paid for the f*cking right to listen to.

My co-worker loved Vermillion pt 2 when she heard it, then Before I Forget came on and that was the end of that. You know I often wonder what most people thought when they first heard "Wait and Bleed" and went out and bought the album. For a while most of the radio stations in NY only played the radio-version of it which is quite different then the album version. Can you just imagine the look of horror when they heard (SIC)?

I'm not overly fond of the 3rd album. If I wanted to hear Stone Sour type Corey I would have put on the Stone Sour album. Which isn't bad, but I expected Slipknot and those sounds are few and far between. It sucks that they took the turn they did. Corey had an awesome voice for that sound.

The Fray is an EXCELLENT new band - They have one song on the radio right now called "over my head", but I recommend the song "How to save a life" - the song is about how the singer tried to save the life of a friend of his who was addicted to crack - beautiful song.

I don't like much commercial radio but every now and then you find a diamond in the rough and now it's, like Wexy said, dead. And I'm tired of WBAB's same 25 songs. And The Bone doesn't come in for sh*t unless you live in the boonies on LI.

We should be getting a new Godsmack album in 06 :D

"It will perk people's eyebrows up again," he said. "The first couple of records were kind of the same record, in a sense. They were sort of bordering that metal sound and then the third record had more rock mixed into it. [The Other Side] really softened up the sound. This one is more rock and roll, and some songs are very epic, in a Tool[-ish] sense.

Satellite radio has been a Godsend for me Wexy. I've discovered so many great new bands since I subscribed to Sirius last year. I'm sure XM subscribers would say the same thing.

AHHHHH! The secretmasons! Sorry, I have become farmiliar with them recently due to reasons I would rather not get into. Their music is a little harder than I tend to like, but they aren't bad. They are actually playing in Tulsa next Friday.

I'm planning to go see Arctic Monkeys at the 9:30 Club- haven't been there in a while.

Thievery actually owns 18th Street Lounge, which is where they played. It was pretty cool but we didn't know they were playing until we got there and there was a huge line. A little too crowded for my tastes. I'd just as soon go when the regular house DJ's are playing similar style stuff, without all the hipster kids who get all dressed up to go out 'clubbing.'

What stations on XM do you listen to for new rock? I just got it a few months ago and have mostly listened to sports stations and the decades. (I have a short commute- spring and summer finds me in the car much more often and I'll need a lot more music, plus the Yankees.)

Another one whose name should be familiar to baseball fans: The Mendoza Line.

Rolling Stone's brief writeup on them:

When they lived in Athens, GA, the Mendoza Line played pretty pop and put out records on Kindercore. Then they moved to Brooklyn, started arguing with one another, and got really, really good. Male and female voices trade off literally and metaphorically above (or sometimes from deep within) arrangements that vary from hushed, vaguely alt-country balladry to more driving fare.

I'm listening to Simon and Garfunkel right now, and I've been worshipping them a lot lately. But that's not something new, I've been a fan of theirs for a while.

The last cd I bought was Jefferson Airplane- Surrealistic Pillow which is awesome. So that's the most recent music I'm into.

Also, you guys should totally check out The Hero Factor. They are absolutely incredible.

I would say that they sound a bit like a mix of the strokes, smiths, with a little bit of a ska influence at times. they're not the most original band but they write really good tunes and the singer has an interesting voice.

The Fray is an EXCELLENT new band - They have one song on the radio right now called "over my head", but I recommend the song "How to save a life" - the song is about how the singer tried to save the life of a friend of his who was addicted to crack - beautiful song.

Great CD! The whole thing is awesome. I really like "Heaven Forbid"

Robert Randolph and the Family Band are amazing. Probably one of the most creative artists out there right now. He's an insane pedal steel guitar playing. They mix funk, blues, jazz, rock, just about anything, and it all sounds amazing. They really know how to jam. See them live if you can. If you can't, buy Live at the Wetland's or Unclassified, but Live at the Wetlands is better because it's live.

Sorry that was completely random but I felt like mentioning him.

I can actually answer a question about the "Worst Format Ever Created and Ruined My Life" (KRock was essentially the only music station I listened to -- now I have to shuffle around between the crap on Z100, PLJ and Jack FM, none of which I particularly care for -- or haven't cared for since I was like 16). I work in Media Buying, so I heard about the switch from KRock to "Free FM" in early November... and was not happy. If my commute was longer, I'd get satellite, but considering I have to drive all of 10 minutes, it's not worth my expense which pisses me off about the death of KRock even more (although technically KRock died last year when they started playing too much 80's hairband crap).

Infinity is an evil and decided that because Howard Stern was popular, that the format was created to give a kind of "All Howard All the Time" feel -- called the "Rock Talk" format. Or at least, that's the gist (without the hatred) of the spiel one of the sales reps at the affiliate in Pheonix told me. However I got the pleasure of telling her we don't buy advertising on "new" stations that had unproven ratings, which made me feel good. I hope the format dies. Please die crappy format!

I just finished listening to the Brand New songs you sent me. They are really good. Thanks for turning me on to them. I'll have to check out more of their other stuff. Although I must admit, I really do not see the Morrissey parallel. I think they sound more like The Catherine Wheel, The Blake Babies, O Positive and even The Cure crossed with R.E.M. I also don't understand why they seem to be lumped into the Emo category. I don't think they sound Emo at all.

hahaha maybe its just me. The lead singer is a HUGE morrisey fan and sometimes tries to sound like him when he sings (like track 2 of the stuff u downloaded).

I suggest that you download their last album Deja Entendu. The whole cd is amazing and the last track on it (play crack the sky) is quite possibly the most amazing song i have ever heard (song gives me chills)

and yes, they kick ass live!

BN's older stuff used to be more punkish and their lyrics were completely different. I guess thats why they were grouped into the "emo" catagory. They've really matured as a band since 2000.

Id guess somewhere around summer time or a little bit before it. They recorded something like 50 songs (thats what i heard) and are now making cuts for which ones will be on the album. After that they'll just have to re-record the ones they choose and master them.

The come out of the Long Island emo scene, so that is where the label comes from. But you are right, they don't really sound much like Morrisey IMO. I have hungout with the lead singer a couple times and he is a big Morrisey fan CanoforPrez is right about that.

Not legal, but probably impossible for the government to do anything about it. Being located in Russia, where they are not co-operative with the U.S. with copyright issues, the feds would never get client records. With that in mind, I would imagine they may still get you by the credit cards.

The New York Times had a big article on it a while back. While they are legal for the Russian market, the license for the music is not legal for outside of Russia.

I really got into TMV when Scabdates came out a couple years ago. They are a little out there, but definitely my style.

See! I'm not the only one! TMV owns all prog-rock. If you like Frances, you have to go back and grab Deloused in the Comatorium. A new one (tentatively titled Helena) will be dropping at some point this year.
