With Damon on board, Bubba becomes very expendable. Bernie is capable of filling in for a day-off every now and then, so he's the 4th OF/PH/DH. BTW, given the way talked about Bernie's diminished roll this year, is he really the everyday DH? Bubba, while a nice defensive player isn't a sensational OF, and he is a relative offensive liablity.

Carry 3 catchers? doubtful

Carry Cairo , Escalona and Phillips?

What about Kevin Reese instead of Bubba? He's a lefty, had a lot of walks and makes good contact?

I really don't think Bernie is our regular DH. I think our DH this year will be a rotating combo of Giambi/Sheff/Matsui/Bernie/Phillips (or his eventual replacement). In my opinion, the key to this type of rotation will be upgrading Bubba's slot to a major league quality 4th OF who can also hold his own at 1B.

The thing is, Bernie is not a 4th outfielder. He can't play RF, has never played LF, and is a horrible CFer. We need a guy that can play all those positions adequately, and Bubba can.

But he suks offensively that's the problem :(

Agreed. Although Bubba is an offensive liability, Bernie is a complete defensive liability. A back-up outfielder needs to more importantly be able to play the field defensively, especially with the Yanks' new potent line-up.

Sadly we need a hybrid of Bernie & Bubba. I love those two guys but someone like Jeff DaVanon would be perfect as our 4th outfielder, though I know we aren't getting him.

However Bubba's "O" seemed to perk up a bit last year so who knows maybe he can give us a little something in 06.

Bernie shouldn't set foot on outfield grass at ALL

That he is. But, he can be used as a defensive replacement and the fact is, Bernie can't play in the outfield anymore. We need a better version of Bubba Crosby. Maybe Kevin Thompson or Kevin Reese can be more productive and can win over the position in ST.

Carry 3 catchers, and DH Posada 70 games a year, DH Shef 60 etc.. Philips/Posada/Williams/Shef should be able to carry the DH load, while rotating Philips/Reece/Thompson or Crosby.

If Giambi has demonstrated anything is that the more he plays 1B, the better an offensive player he is. That's a trade-off I'm willing to make.
