Picked up a couple of lobsters and corn at the supermarket for dinner tonight. The corn was pretty meh.

I can't wait until the local farm stands starts selling corn again in the summer.
The only time I've ever had corn and seafood was when I picked up corn chowda, then added in some seafood that I'd bought and added to the mix. usually shrimp, mussels, mixed seafood, etc.

Corn on the cob served with a steamed lobster is pretty traditional. I'm surprised you've haven't encountered that combo in your gastric journey.

Barb, that place sounds awesome!
Is there something in particular you order from there?

Tonight I made grilled chicken & parsley sausage, a fresh tomato/cucumber/red onion salad, and cheesy rice w/broccoli.
Was ok, but not as good as I'd hoped (the sausage). The tomato salad was good, though.

Corn on the cob I've never been a fan of. I've bought it before, but wasn't interested in boiling it at home, nor eating it in restaurants. I like the kernels, not the cob.

Only coconuts are worse than corn in the "outer shell to inner fruit" proportion, as far as difficulty in getting to the goodies.

The chicken souvlaki platter. They give you 3 skewers of chicken, rice or fries, tomato and pita bread on the side. They make their own sauce (BZ Grill sauce) made from mustard and mayo. Staying on diet in my neighborhood is next to impossible.

They also have delicious salads.

We just got home from the first cook-out of the day...
A Grillin' Extravaganza...Italian sausages (hot & mild) w/grilled onions/peppers - country ribs marinated in mojo overnight, corn on the cob, and cheeseburgers & hotdobs for the teenagers. Altho' I did see one brave enough to try my peppers & onions :)
BBQ beans,Reskin potato salad, coleslaw & cucumber, red onion salad in a sour cream/redwine vinegar dressing. Various relishes, chips, dips & homemade salsa.

Plenty of liquid refreshments..the blender was whirring with daquari's(sp?), margarhita's. Beers, sodas & lemonade.

The neighbors gig is still going strong...might slip over there for a hot minute to get in a game of dominoes & have some of their left-overs..:D

Trust me, I wouldn't touch any wine that tasted like Corona. :P Here's a link about the wine (http://www.donandsons.com/threeloosescrews/pepperwoodgrove/cabernetsauvignon.php).

I actually found about this wine by accident. I was out in PA and didn't have a red wine for dinner. The PA Wine and Spirit Shop was closed for the night so I had to go to West Virginia (only a half hour away) and wound up at the Rite-Aid in Berkeley Springs, WV. Yes, they sell wine in a pharmacy; go figure. They had a case of the stuff and were selling it for $3.50 a bottle. So I bought the case and bitched about having to pay 9% sales tax. But it was worth it.

Don't know what we are having for the main course yet. However, I got a recipe for a delicious and simple cake recipe from Weight Watchers (for those desiring a quick and easy dessert):

Ingredients are 1 box of angel food cake mix (just the dry mix) and one 20 oz. can of crushed pineapple (undrained). Mix the two together well and pour into a 9x13 pan (I used this one sprayed with Pam) or angel food cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees about 35 mins or until golden brown. Can be topped with ice cream or whatever you like. It's really good!

(I don't think Weight Watchers recommends eating 3 pieces at a time like I did!).

I need to go out and get some burgers, then some o' those Bermuda onions. I'm looking at some burger with "The Works" that costs like $6, and $10 for a double burger. Another $4 just fer an extra patty, and an extra 80¢ fer cheese?

Once that's done, I have all the other ingredients: lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mayo. Oh, I don't have any slaw. I'll just pick that up. I ain't puttin' no pickled cabbage (or wot-evah that stupid thingy is made of) through the food processor.

I find myself eating a lot less at work. Even w/some downtime, I just don't eat much. I'll just eat half at home, then take less to work.

Tonite fer din-din, only the best will do:

Google won't tell me what something tastes like. I'll need first-hand experience fer that one. :D Will Rachel Ray get on my case like only you can? :P

Stupid question, but is sea salt really "salty" in its sodium content? I remember having picked up some low-sodium salt, since my parents had salt problems.

I just don't have the energy for this today. You can buy some and try it.

It's really good.

For a cheap alternative, kosher salt's great (and replaced iodized in my kitchen a long time ago, except for baking). Both taste less "salty", if that makes sense.

I'm pretty sure sea salt is like most other salts in that it's something like 40% sodium, 60% chloride. The thing is, the sodium in most diets doesn't really come from the salt that people use at the table or when they're cooking, but in processed foods in which sodium is used liberally as a seasoning and preservative. I think a study by the Mayo clinic showed that cooking meals from scratch effectively eliminated as much as 77% of the sodium in the average person's diet. Food for thought!

EDIT: Alaskan King Crab legs were on sale, so tonight we're making crab bisque with toasted sourdough bread.

I only used Kosher salt some time ago when a recipe called for it. I never bought a refill of this, since the chick clumps of salt weren't anything I thought that I could use.

I've got a box o Diamond Crystal's Salt Sense, which is low in sodium. That's what I ue at home.

One huge other problem is that restaurants have the salt packets filled w/salt, but the pepper ones are half empty. This means they want people to just add more salt, even if the food was already prepared with hi-sodium ingredients.

EDIT: Alaskan King Crab legs were on sale, so tonight we're making crab bisque with toasted sourdough bread.

I haven't made seafood soup in ages. I'd likely start with some cream of corn soup, add heavy cream, then toss in lots of shrimp, lump crabmeat, mussels, etc.

Perfect sense. I was once given a selection of a dozen or so different salts, as a housewarming gift. Until then, I figured salt was salt. And, well, salt IS salt, but they can taste radically different depending on where it was mined, other minerals present, how it was crushed, etc., etc.

I steam the legs, remove the meat from the shells (an ordeal...), then use the shells for a quick stock with some veg and strain. Then I just simmer the stock with the crab meat, butter, herbs, and a little tomato sauce until it reduces down and thickens, don't even add cream.

It's actually really easy, but it's a pain to separate the meat from the shells.

I'll see, but I've already got enough salt in the house. I don't even use much. That and I've lost my pepper shaker.

I made a chicken breast sandwich yesterday, then added some corned beef and turkey. Pretty good, on oat bran bread.

I rarely make anything on Sundays. I just had some stuff from one of the food court places, which is pretty good, except the fries are a little soggy. Only Mickey D's and Burger King seem to make half-decent fries, I guess.

Trail mix, juice and salad are on the menu.

Aw, bummer! We went in the middle of the 7th inning and there were only about 4 people in line. I guess people line up early to eat right away. Sorry. :(

So you had the Brother Jimmy's BBQ? We thought about that in the early innings because there's one on the Terrace level, but opted for the liquid appetizers in the end :) . By the 7th inning we were STARVING and the hike down to the food court was made in record time!

Try to get to it next time, though, I'm telling you it's worth every penny.

Hot dobs, on the other hand, are a mighty fine alternative!

We finally got to have the Lobel's prime rib sandwiches last night--you were right! Very delicious and tender. Yum!!! We got there at about 6pm so the line was not that bad. Dad and I opted for ther horseradish...of course! I also figured out which hot dob stand you talk about with the $2 dobs. :D

I'll have to tell the Hubs about the foil/grill thing. He's caught a few but they're really strong. He's caught stripers when in Va Beach...says they're delicious..

I'm not a fan of any fish..but he's caught snook and broiled it with lemon/butter & Sazon seasoning. That was pretty good..:) Of course nothing beats a fresh dolphin catch...

Tonight we had 'brown stew chicken' from the Jamaican place near us. With rice/red beans, steamed cabbage/carrots & plantains...WOW!!

Ally, I have to ask--how do you prepare the bluefish? I know when we go out for stripers a lot of people catch blues as well and everyone complains because there is no good way to cook it. Although my dad claims my grandfather loved bluefish and had some secret way to cook it.

We had lobster last night (on sale @ Shop Rite like they are every year for Fathers Day) and will be having it again Sunday.

Tonight I'm going to my parents' for cocktail hour so dinner will be booze and snacks.

I cook it with tomatoes - I make a foil pouch, lay the fish in there, salt & pepper it and put diced tomatoes, a little garlic, lemon juice and while wine in with it, then cook it in the oven. It takes a lot of the fishiness away, but it's still a strong fish. I love stripers - I didn't know you guys fish. Too bad we live so far away - JP and the (db)bf sound like they'd get along really well. I didn't make it last night, though - I really didn't want to cook, so JP ordered pizza and I had a chicken parm hero. YUM.

Those turkey Italian turkey sausages (they come 6 to a pack w/some plastic on top). I thought they'd take too long to make, since they didn't look fully done on the grill. I put them on foil and stuck 'em in the toaster oven on "toast" for 6 minutes and they were nicely browned.

I added this to some beef bacon, the last of my romaine, then some mini portabellos for my salad.

I used 1/3 of a fat hero bread, romaine, beef bacon, corned beef, pastrami and turkey for a sandwich.

Add in some trail mix and I'm fine.

I made what Mr. LDG affectionately refers to as Fat Pie.

Here's the recipe for anyone else who doesn't care or is looking for something every man will love.

13x9 pan, ungreased.

Bottom layer is 1 can of refrigerated crescent rolls -roll out and press to cover the bottom.

Evenly layer the following (all sliced very thin) twice:
Boiled ham
Provolone
Hard salami
Swiss cheese
Pepperoni
Roasted red peppers (I dice them)

Pour 2/3 mixture of 3 eggs, 3 TBSP grated parm and a ½ tsp. black pepper over it

Top with another can of crescent rolls. Brush with last 1/3 of egg/cheese/pepper mixture. Cover with foil and bake for about 25 min. at 375, uncover and bake another 10-20 min. until top crust is golden brown.

Let cool and cut into squares.

Sooooooo ... the salad was all of the above, plus red peppers, 'shrooms, then some other pasta and tuna that the local deli had.

After that, some trail mix, cookies and juice. Not bad. :)

I got bored, so I made some lo-tech chili. I started with a small amount of chili that I'd bought & frozen at the local fast food joint. I added a small can of Hormel's beef chili.

I then added a finely chopped large onion, 2 capfuls each of EVOO & canola oil. From there, I added a little jerk seasoning, some medium wing sauce, soy sauce, and a little balsamic vinegar. Add in some water, oregano seasoning, Adobo and 5-spice seasoning.

It tasted very nice. Now I can put some on the hot dobs (tastes a lot better 'n' than the "straight from the can" chili any hot dob place will sell you). The rest will be made into chili con carne, and the remainder will be frozen.

I think we've had this conversation before, Brad.

I use a Weber bullet smoker http://www.amazon.com/Weber-2820-Smokey-Mountain-Cooker/dp/B00004U9VA That's not it's "official" name but that's what everybody calls it.... charcoal, wood, etc for fuel used only outdoors.

Pork ribs... I buy the big vacuum pack from Costco and trim them myself to be St. Louis style (you find the knuckle joint on the slab and trim through the cartilege leaving just bone and meat. You also trim away the flap and square up the ends. By doing so you leave a rack that resembles babybacks... the purpose is to have a rack with uniform thickness and size that gives a better result for smoking. We freeze the extra trimmings and my wife uses them for tomato sauce and meatballs etc., so nothing goes to waste.)

I don't eat pork, but what exactly is the trimming to St Louis style ribs mean? I always thought that it was just pork ribs. I also have no idea why each is linked to geography. Why is one Memphis, another is St Louis, then Chicago, etc? It's all just a hog.

I was googling for St. Louis ribs to find a description on wikipedia for you... and lo and behold here's a guy on youtube demonstrating how to do it...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_MGM_RRTUQ

The only difference is I cut the tip off to square them up... the tip is a little thin and it tends to dry out when you smoke them. (as Alton Brown would say - not good eats)

I'm going to assume they're called St. Louis style because that's where they first trimmed the ribs like that.
