That sounds good.
How do you cook the asparagus for that?

BronxBaumer
05-09-08, 09:56 AM
I cook the asparagus outside on the grill and prepare it as follows:

- Lightly coat a piece of tinfoil with Olive Oil -- do the same to the aparagus (very sparingly)
- Season it with salt and some sort of steak seasoning of your choice.
- Place tinfoil with asparagus on grill on high. Turk asparagus every few minutes for about ten-to-fifteen minutes, or until soft. Add additional seasoning as desired.

I wonder if I could grill it on my countertop grill without the foil?

A lot of times I put the asparagus on tin foil on a pan and bake it. Just season it with course sea salt and a little pepper. Delicious!

For some strange reason, I thought that most people ate American food.

I know that consomme is a very thin soup, but what's in yours? What's a bruchetta? I know that scallops is seafood, but you add almonds to yours?

OK, upon research, I've found this recipe (http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/001321bruschetta_with_tomato_and_basil.php) for bruschetta. Looks interesting (and tasty).

So the filet mignon is cut and put into skewers, then grilled? I've never done this before, but interesting. A bit complex, especially since I don't have an outdoor grill.

montrealer

That's because you're up in Montreal, Canada. In the USA, more people have lots of American dishes.

That's great to go through all the trouble for your wife, but I can't see doing that every day.

I was just thinking that this was quite a bit of trouble, even if for Mother's Day. Yes, I know that mothers are very special people, and many thanks for women such as yourself, Karen, Vicki (even though she's very confused) and others here!!! :D

I'm also wondering why the heck food has to be given such crazy names. I had to look up "bruchetta", I had to google this and I'd found out it's something that's breaded with cheese. I mean that's like when I've heard of stuffed duck livers being called foie gras.

Snails are called escargot, you cook bunny rabbit a fancy way, it's called Hossenpheffer, and I couldn't give a rat's freakin' arse how it's spelled, dammit!!! :gulp::O :D

Now then, if I wish to skewer my filet mignon, I'll call it "skewered filet mignon". If I wish to cook it in the oven or below the oven, I'll call it "baked or grilled filet mignon". Why the heck can't people just use simple words for food? Does anyone know what a T-bone steak is? Doesn't the bone structure resemble the letter "T"? Simple, right? It's called AMERICAN FOOD. Sheesh.

Besides, hamburger isn't the beginning nor the end of American food. You can have shrimp scampi, meatloaf, grilled chicken and tons of other things. Go to any diner and order the so-called "comfort food" or visit a TGIF, etc, you'll always find tons of restaurants that serve good ol' American food. Mebbe--and this is a big mebbe--people can actually pronounce the name of the food they're eating.

If I wish to eat something that was given a fancy name that I can't pronounce, nor figure out what it is, I'll just go to Chinatown and order. In that case, I also won't even be able to read the damned-assed menu either!!! :gulp::D :P

Now then, if someone has some fancy schmansy food that requires me to google what the heck they're talking about, why the heck don't they just link the name of the food? Otherwise, you may just be eating a nouveau version of Peter Brady's po'k chops & apple sauce on Wednesdays, but with some special sauce on everything that you'd need to be a chef to understand!!! :gulp::O :P

Only chicken and potatoes do I fry, with the exception of some Indian food (samosas, then some plantains). Everything else, no dice.

You call that food? Sounds like some cheesy restaurant that doesn't know what comfort food is all about. Small bits of chicken, green peas, gobs of processed mash with some lime green gravy all over the place. I thought that gravy was supposed to be brown, not greenish.

Anywayz, can people use food terms that most folks here can understand? I've never heard of "brauchette" or whatever before. Do they have a new term for refrigerator? For steak? For calimari (oh yeah, that's squid)? This is ridiculous, even if it's another rant of mine.

Since when did I say I was going to list everything that was considered American food? Dude, this is a discussion, not a PS debate. We're just talking about food and having fun.

:gulp::O :P

This post was too long to read, but I'm thinking you missed the point.

They don't have meatloaf with mashed taters up there? No half chicken or anything like this? I should google some menus up in Quebec or wherever.

I'm not a food historian, but I didn't see the wrapped sandwiches popping up in American restaurants until the last few years. For a burrito, that's always been wrapped, then the fast food chains made burrito sammiches.

I haven't had a burrito in awhile, so I'm unsure what goes inside of it. I'm sure that it's something different.

If you went into a deli and ordered a BLT, isn't that an American sammich? Which other nationality has this? To me, that's as American as ham & cheese, regardless of who started serving this. That's what I mean by American food.

Jersey Yankee

Rhetorically, that would be interesting if it were FRENCH food. However, since there are more Chinese restaurants here than about anything else I can think of, why would anything that's Chinese translate to French but not to English? All of the Chinese restaurants outside of Chinatown have an all-English menu, so I don't see how that would be likely.

I dont have a deep fryer. I have an electric skillet thing thats about 2-2 1/2 " deep. I put peanut oil in there (its a little healthier) and fry them in there. It works pretty well.
The fries are homemade as well. Sometimes I fry those the same way I do the fish or sometimes I bake them.

I've used both halibut and salmon. Cod is a little fishy for me. My fiancee just loves salmon but the smell makes me gag. If I batter it up, I cant smell it! ;)

3 eggs
3/4 cup beer
1 1/2 cups milk
4 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons cornstarch
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
2 1/2 pounds of fish fillets
A little lemon juice for extra flavor
(MIX POWDERS TOGETHER FIRST THEN ADD LIQUIDS IN ANY ORDER)

Heat heavy saucepan, skillet etc to about 375 degrees. I add enough oil so that its at least 1 1/2" deep in the pan. More if you have a deep enough pan.
Stick your fish in the batter and then fry up. I stick a few pieces in at a time because I dont have the patience to do one at a time! Fry about 2-3 minutes on each side. You'll know when they're done when they have that yummy golden brown color.
Enjoy!

Awesome! Thanks. I'm going out to eat tonight....I may have to get fish & chips now. Salmon is one of my favorites. It's usually what I get when I go out to eat. That or filet mignon.

So not one of you'ze peeps had food today? Me, I made a PB&J sandwich. Is that American enuff fer you'ze folks? :D

After that, two scrambled eggs (I should've made them over easy just for variety), 'taters and toast. Then some herbal tea. I guess that nobody has breakfast around here.

I just bought some salad stuff today, mostly green and red leaf, broccoli, yellow peppers and some dressing.

I'll finish the last of the turkey breast and pastrami cold cuts tonight. Should make a great triple decker sammich!!! :gulp::O :P

I decided to experiment a little with fried chicken. Instead of using an egg, I just took it out from the plastic bag where it was marinating, letting the marinating stuff be the only liquid. I then added some of those herbed bread crumbs, adding only white corn meal. Instead of frying, I grilled it on my toaster oven. I'll see how it works. I'd covered it in foil earlier, but I guess that even 2 hours @ 300F didn't get it done. I'm trying to cook this again.

What the heck does the metric system have to do with cooking? I know that 2 liters = 67.6 oz. I know that 25.4mm = 1". I know that there's about 5km to 1 mile.

Now then, what does that have to do with your typing stuff in French when people here read English?

I'm starting to wonder, does anyone here just throw a steak into the oven, make it soft and have it with a potato or rice? Everybody has this wonderous recipe here. It's like everyone tries being Emeril and says how great it was. Does anyone throw a TV dinner into the nuker?

I have trouble seeing how so many people here can always make a fancy meal 7 days a week. Now I'm getting food names in French, and you're telling me about the metric system, one I'm already somewhat familiar with?

Difficult to do what? Make fried chicken? Why would it take someone a long period of time to make fried chicken, unless you're talking about the time it takes to heat the pot?

Does a salad take a long time to make? Does a PB&J take a long time? Only when I'm trying to make these complex meals you folks do that it gets a long time. That's why for the most part, I avoid them.

I'm still wondering why nobody in here says they've ever burned a meal. All these fancy dishes, you'd think that someone overdid one of the ingredients. Everything always comes out flawless. That part I have a hard time believing, especially since it's always tasting great. Oh well, I must be the only person here who's ever overdone the ingredients or left it on the pot just a little too long.

At least you make your posts in English. Methinks that Jacques thinks it's still yesterday and is trying to do what Sam loves doing--pulling my leg nonstop. Doesn't work the next day, but he'll take another day or two to figure that out. If not, I can't help it.

Hey, Big Sis, how are ya? :D

Yeah, I've been mostly nuking all of my rice this week. I make a big pot, put them into small plastic thingies, then just nuke away, adding a little margarine at the bottom, which seems to come out nicely.

For the chicken, I just reheat. If I've frozen, I just let it heat very slowly.

So it's pepper turkey & pastrami on oat bread w/red leaf, tomatoes + my salad of red & green leaf, tomatoes, carrots, peppers (it's either yellow or orange), then some red cabbage. Simple, right? Perhaps I should try some idiot way to translate that into French, then add Freedom Fries to see if I impress anybody.

The only way I've been able to reheat pasta is to recook it in the sauce that it's usually served in. I tried nuking some chicken ravioli (or something like this), but the texture didn't look right. I have a small pot (1.5 qts, I think) that I just add some pasta sauce into, and that's the only time that this comes out OK. I just reheat slowly.

So you reboiled the noodles, or the spaghetti was made fresh? Or are you saying that it was just the sauce that was leftover?

Me, I'll put the extra spaghetti or other pasta in olive oil in a plastic thing and keep it airtight. I don't like adding sauce, since I can just use either crushed tomatoes or pasta sauce, then add them together into a small pot over low fire when making them. I've gotten zero success nuking pasta, so I don't even waste time doing so.

If it's dairy-based sauce, then I'll use that, but the cheese can stick, so I don't keep that long in the fridge.

Oh, and make sure to combine that Popeye's chicken with the pasta. Hide the bones and tell your bro that the dog ate it (like it ate your freakin' homework). Either that or feed the bones to the dog. Any excuse will do.

Thank goodness. I was wondering about these people here. I mean sports fans make nice meals (especially the NFL crowd who tailgate and all), but it's like I was hearing people having a beef wellington, then Oyster Rockefeller, then crabcake. All this while I eat my fried chicken and a turkey 'n' corned beef sammich. Wow.

I rarely use my oven much. Those conventional things don't have an auto-off, and when I'm tired, if I put like 4 chicken legs in the oven, if they get burned, I've wasted good travel time, chicken legs and spices.

I like my crock pot also, but that doesn't have an off button also. The only thing I trust my oven for us when I put it on really low. Once I get on the web, time flies. Once I sleep, same thing. Especially if I'm on the web and a game is on, not a good time for me to cook, even though I should take advantage of this time better.

I think I only made a pea soup once. I was more successful with my navy bean soup, tho, since instead of pork, I used some undercooked beef bacon, letting it cook the rest of the way in the soup itself. That and some small slices of smoked turkey legs.

Then there's my "crazy boy soup" with the goat or chicken, then the other with cow foot and beef tripe. Those are just some Caribbean island specials that most Americans don't like, and even my own nieces weren't too thrilled with these. Still, Mom & Dad made cow foot soup, and the Dominicans have "Mondongo", which is their beef tripe soup.

I would have no idea how to make garlic bread. Off the top of my head, I'd get some of those very long loaves of Italian hero bread (the ones which say "Thursday" or whichever day they go bad), slice, then use a butter knife to put some crushed garlic into this. I'd need a very large amount of this, then some margarine.

I used to make ice cream before, but then you have to freeze the things which the ice cream churns in for about a day before you make the ice cream. That was great, since the ingredients could be bought the same day, and I could use my choice of milk, in addition to the heavy cream.

I'll try. It won't be all successful, but like I keep saying, life's not all roses and no thorns, so it's pretty hard to think that we have all these success stories but no failures. It's like sinking the 8 ball in pool, but never ever having scratched on it once. Kinda hard to believe is all I'll say. ;)

See ya later, Big Sis!!! :D

Oh, OK. I usually do the opposite if I make too much spaghetti.

I rarely even have tomato sauce. I finally opened one of those cans of crushed tomatoes in my cupboard. The stupid thing looked just like a bottle of Prego or Ragu. I mean, why the heck have I been buying those things all these years when the main ingredients are right there in front of me? Since I don't know how to cook and puree those things like that (and, yes, I do have a food processor), I may just make my own tomato sauce. I mean, could it be impossible to add in 4 cheese, or some mushrooms?

I doubt if I'd go as far as vodka sauce. Why waste good vodka, after all?!!! :gulp::O :P

Anywayz, I may start making a few Italian dishes. I've found that the tomato sauce freezes nicely, so if I don't use it for awhile, I don't need no fuzzy science project stuff growing in the fridge.

I'll call my next project ... meat-a-ballz and spaghetti w/extra doses of parm. Add in some gahlic, some mushrooms, and use some of that EVOO. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Have you ever seen the bumper stickers that say 26 + 6 = 1. It's a reference to the 26 independent counties of the south of Ireland and the six that are still under English rule, and a hope that someday they will be one united nation.

Please tell Mr LDG that you've shoveled some food under the door and given me a midnight snack for tonight. Hope he doesn't mind. :P

Gladly. He always makes waaaaaaaay too much food and there are always ample leftovers.

For tonight, I have all the ingredients for Ally's veggie crockpot recipe and will assemble it at lunchtime so it'll be ready for dinner.

Sad but true, I have had and enjoyed both fried cheesecake and fried apple pie. Therefore, leading to me needing the weight loss thread!

BTW, I have had bruschetta on the 4th of July, for whatver that's worth.
You needing a weight loss? Hmmmmmmm, if JP doesn't bop me upside the head, I figured you were one who had a bit of babyfat, which I think is never a bad thing, since some people have the persona, the face and the physique to carry that off well. However, once you get into deep-fried goodies that are way too much of a good thing, then you get into the other category.

I shall have to now post my "Please Save Allybear from herself" thread, just so you don't go into the glutonous areas of fatty foods & snax. :D

You had bruschetta on the 4th of July? Did you at least also have chicken & ribs? Freedom Fries? Corn, hot diggity dogies, wings and other AMERICAN goodies? If so, I don't mind, since you'll still be on my faves list.

Of course, I'll need you to chase away Trish if she decides to throw a saucepan at me, but who knows? :D

Today, I finally made a very good fried chicken. I've been playing around with techniques, but I used one egg in one of those small round thingies that people scramble eggs in. It even has a hook so you can hang it on the pot hanger.

I scrambled the egg, dropped the 4 pieces of chicken (2 thighs, 2 drumsticks) in there and made sure they were all fully covered in eggs.

Then, instead of using a separate plate or bowl, I added the herbed breading for about 3 parts, and some white corn meal for 1 part. No measuring, just adding as needed.

I then just rolled everything around until it was all were covered with some moist breading.

In my big non-stick frying pan (the good one, which is my fave), I added some oil. It's been actually used once and strained, but it's some canola and corn oil combo.

On high heat, I did one side, it became brown very nicely. The breading didn't cake too thickly, it looked nice. Kind of like what I get at restaurants.

After they were all done, I even had one drumstick I'd grilled but w/o oil. That was too dry, so I threw that in there also.

Since that was merely browned but not cooked, I used my Showtime rotisserie to make sure they were done for another 40 minutes, I think.

I boiled some potatoes on high for about the same time the chicken was grilling in the rotisserie. They could've used another 15 minutes, but wot-evah.

That's Brad's chicken & taters lunch. :)

Ireland is in the UK?!? :scared: Since when, exactly - except for the North, Ireland has been its own country since the 1920's. Apparently (because JP was watching it the other day twice), "Michael Collins" is on one of the movie channels this month - watch and learn, son.

Have you ever seen the bumper stickers that say 26 + 6 = 1. It's a reference to the 26 independent counties of the south of Ireland and the six that are still under English rule, and a hope that someday they will be one united nation.

/rant - sorry to really derail conversation here, but JP would kill me if I let that slide (he once told "King Henry" at one of those medieval dinner places "free the North").

OH, and they do have Shepherd's Pie in Ireland - it should be made with lamb, but I always use ground turkey.
I must've forgotten. I'd gotten into some guy from Northern Ireland who was a wee bit touchy over everything, but I'd asked him if "Erin" applied to both, and he almost took my head off when he'd said SURELY.

What's with Michael Collins? Movie or TV show?

I've seen the color orange, and some woman I knew and liked was born in Ireland, and she'd confirmed that the color orange on St Pat's Day was very controversial and volatile. I hadn't realized what that was all about. There are 6 counties still under Brit rule? Wow.

Did JP have to run like nobody's bizniz after he'd asked for the north to be freed?!!! :gulp::D :P

When I was at my last gym (which was a LONNNNNNNNNNNNG time ago), every St Pat's, one of the Irish women would cook Shepherd's pie, which was her Mom's recipe. We all loved and adored this, since she really made this well. I would ask for the recipe, but I'm wondering if the Evil Catty Woman (Trish) would chase me off this thread for messing up the details. :P

Oh well, lemme finish my grub. :D

That reminds me of my folks. Mom used to do all the cooking when we were home, then as we slowly left the nest, my brother and I were the last. Mom transferred almost all daily cooking duties to my Dad (which he never really liked).

I had to keep telling Pops not to complain about food prices, and to start cooking less, since he didn't have the same number of mouths to feed. Then he complained when I ate too much, which made things even weirder.

Wot-evah.

All I need now is fer Vicki to come in here and confuse the bejeezus outta me, or for Jenn to act up (like she always does). :D

Oh, and tell hubby to put some extra shrimp on the barbie for me, please!!! :gulp::D :P
