His name was Otis and he was 18 going on 19. I've had him since I was 17 years old. He had this insidious disease called FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). I watched him waste away. There was nothing I could do for him, the disease is incurable. Once I realized he was suffering, I made an appointment to have him put to sleep. The appointment was today. He died last night.

Sorry for my venting, but he was very special to me. RIP Otis.

Losing pets sucks. Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. There's nothing quite as painful (with a couple exceptions) as the death of a beloved pet.

He was a cutie. :(

Wow. CJM.... I'm pretty sure that's what my cat has and my cat's the same age... just got him when I was 4 (and I'm 20 now) and he was grown when I got him. R.I.P. Otis.

Hugs,
Brooke

:( I'm sorry.

Losing a pet (might as well say losing a member of the family) is one of the hardest things to deal with. My dog passed last summer, I still miss her tremendously but I'm happy shes in a better place.

Gosh, I'm sorry. But at least you had 18 good years together... I know that's probably little solace right now but you and Otis were both very lucky to have each other for the time that you did.

My sincere condolences.
:(

And Otis looks so very much like Wendy the Wondercat. Aw.... I'm really, genuinely sorry.

That sucks.

But hey, 18 years is pretty good. You gave him 18 happy years, so that's saying something.

Same thing happened to me with my cat Louie. He just wouldn't eat and the doctor told me there was nothing he could do. Near the end, he was all skin and bones, so I decided to put him out of his miseries.

Putting him to sleep is one of the toughest things I've ever had to do. :(

You did the right thing.

What a wonderful life you gave to Otis, and him to you.

When the worst of the pain passes, go out and adopt another pet...... the "homeless" animals of this world need more people like you who will take good care of them for their whole lives.

Sorry about Otis.

Don't say there was nothing you could do for him. Maybe you couldn't make him better because of the kind of disease he had, but you gave him all those wonderful years, and when you knew he was suffering, you did the kindest thing of all-gave him back to his creator.

There is nothing I've ever found harder than knowing it was time to let a pet go. It is the right decision, but so painful to do.

It's good you can talk about it-keep us posted with how you are doing, OK?

I'm sorry. I haven't gone through this yet, but sometimes when I'm being morbid, I think about what life is going to be like without my darling Lulu and my "son" Max, and I just break down (I think I need intensive therapy if I sit around thinking about death so much :-ponder-: )

My Lulu looks like a female version of Otis. Many people don't understand the bond that we cat lovers have with our cats. It's hard to put into words...

Take comfort in knowing that you gave him a great life, and that he lived for so long. He had a good Daddy :)

Wow, almost 19 years. That's amazing, even for a cat. You must have taken great care of him. Hope you feel better soon and can give the same care to a new little guy.

:-sorry-:

I am so sorry. I know how you feel since I have been through this experience 4 times. You will never forget your special friend, but in time the pain will pass and you will cherish the happy memories. You gave your cat a long and happy life.

Sorry for your loss CJ. I'm a big lover of cats and can't tell you how many times I've lost my 'kids' to illness, cars, and dogs. It's a terrible feeling now but remember you gave the big guy years of happiness and joy. He'll always love you. :)

Sorry for the loss. My one cat Princess died last year from stomach cancer, and I still cry thinking about her. My other cat Aleena is getting in the 14-15 year range, and the thought of losing her is devistating. :(

People who have never had a pet cannot understand that losing a pet is like losing a family member.

So he passed before your appointment for today? :( Well at least he was at his favorite place to be for his long life ... and that place was at home and with you.

Awww...My heart goes out to you CJM. :( I've had to put three of my 'babies' away over the years.

'Black Elmo', 'Ms Kitty' & 'Annie' will welcome Otis to that 'big litter box in the Sky'.. ;)

When you feel your ready for another pet...please visit the Animal Shelter. Never will replace Otis, but you can give a homeless 'kitty' a good home.

My heart goes out to you Chris. :( Otis was so lucky to have such a great owner...unless something goes horribly wrong, we pretty much know this day will come -- knowing how terrible it's going to be, we still sign up for it because of how much unconditional love and affection they give us through the years...knowing that doesn't even begin to cushion the blow at all...I'm so sorry for you and Otis. :( RIP Otis. :(

I am so sorry to hear about Otis...when our last dog had cancer and finally had to be put to sleep at almost 13 years old, it was the harderst thing I think I ever did, but I know it was the right thing to do. Otis is in peace now and not suffering any more...hope you feel better and up to adopting a new little furbaby who needs you soon.

I am so sorry to read this sweetie. :( Hopefully the fact that Otis had a great life with someone who loved him so dearly brings you some peace and solace at this very sad time. May Otis RIP. Sending a hug your way. :(

My sincere condolances over the loss...I lost my first cat Tiger when he was 19 (not too bad either), who died in his sleep of natural causes. We lost Calvin just short of his first birthday to FHC a few years ago, so I've been to both sides of the spectrum. They both suck. There's not a day that goes by that I don't still think about Cal and get choked up.

At least you know he had a good life and an owner that cared enough to help him out when he needed it most. I'm sure Cal will offer a wrestle and "Tige" a nap.

I'm really sorry, CJM. I just had to put my cat to sleep this week, on 1/25. So I know exactly what you're going through. My cat was 15 and had been diabetic for 2 1/2 years and also had kidney problems since August. I know she is in a better place but it's really hard. We have had her since I was 16. It sucks but it'll get better. :(

Sorry this is a little late. Sounds like Otis had a very good life.

I am close to making the decision about my 18+ year old cat Pookie. She is so thin, unlike the big hairy monster she used to be. She is peeing everywhere. I know there's no way I'm putting her through a battery of tests and treatments, so it's just a matter of making the phone call, but I just can't bring myself to do it just yet. We have had her for over 16 years when we rescued her as an abandoned cat. It's just so sad to see her like this. :(
