Padres give C Leyritz minor-league deal
SAN DIEGO — Jim Leyritz, known for his clutch postseason home runs and for criticizing one-time teammate Tony Gwynn, signed a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres on Friday. The well-traveled utility player had been playing for the independent minor league Newark Bears, along with Jose Canseco. He's scheduled to join Triple-A Portland on Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. Leyritz wasn't given a guarantee that he'd join the Padres, Towers said. If Leyritz makes it up with the Padres, then his salary will be about $300,000.
