View Full Version : Chacon and Small [Are they signed]??
First excuse me if this has been posted already but I have searched and have not found a thread on this topic.
Aren't Chacon and Small both free agents? If so are the Yankees going to resign them? Perhaps I misread somewhere else that they were both free agents and they really aren't?
Enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

No, both are still with the Yanks.

Wow that is good news. I am still confused though. When did they resign with the Yanks?
Shawn Chacon p
1 year/$2.35M (2005), plus $0.25M in incentives
Aaron Small p
2005
contract purchased 7/05
signed as a free agent 10/04 (minor-league contract)

They were both arbitration eligible.
So what you are saying was they went through the arbi process and each have a new 1 year deal with the ballclub?

Well, not quite. Hearings are held usually in February. Yanks typically though avoid arbitration. Look for both to sign 1 yr deals before that happens.

OK thanks man. Sorry for all the questions.

After 3 years of major league service time, a player has to either be tendered a contract (at least 1 year), go to arbitration, or be non-tendered and become a free agent. Once he reached 6 years of service time, he becomes a free agent.

I Predict Chacon to dominate again this year! He will be the Yankees Dark Horse or '04 A. Small if you will ;)

The Yankees have not yet begun negotiating with arbitration-eligible pitcher Shawn Chacon, according to his agent. Chacon hasn't filed for arbitration yet but has until Jan. 13. Chacon earned $2.35 million in 2005, which was a $500,000 raise on his '04 salary. He should get a much heftier raise this time after going 7-3 with a 2.85 ERA after coming from Colorado in a midseason trade.
Aaron Small is also arbitration-eligible, and Yankee GM Brian Cashman hopes to negotiate next week with the pair.

i hope there yankees next seasonYou don't have to hope. The Yankees have tendered contracts to both Chacon and Small, which means that they can either come to agreement on a contract, or go before an arbitrator, and have him decide which side's contract proposal will be abided by. Either way, both are the property of the Yankees.

I am so glad that the Yankees kept Small. (I knew they would keep Chacon.) Small had a fantastic year last year and its great to see that although he is not some big name all-star pitcher, he's coming right back to the Bronx for hopefully another successful year.

Today is the day for players and teams to submit salary arbitration figures. The Yankees have two players -- pitchers Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small -- eligible for arbitration this year, and they're not likely to sign either before the exchange of figures. Yankees GM Brian Cashman, on vacation this week, said yesterday that he has "had a few conversations but nothing nailed down at this time."
Chacon made $2.35 million last year, and the major-league portion of Small's salary was $500,000 (of which he didn't make 100 percent, since he was in the minors for the season's first few months). Both are likely in for big raises, in light of their contributions to the Yankees' comeback playoff run. Chacon was 7-3 with a 2.85 ERA after the Yankees acquired him from Colorado in late July. Small was a stunning 10-0, 3.20 after his promotion from Triple A.

Both should sign 1- year deals with the team. I can't see Small staying with the Yankees past this season, especially if he has another good year and they don't commit to him. But Chacon, if he proves last year was no fluke, could be signed to a long-term deal and become a mainstay in the rotation.

I don't think Small will be a free agent next winter either, so if the yanks want to keep him, I think he'd be here whether he wants to be or not.

In addition to his base salary, Small could earn $80,000 in performance bonuses: $15,000 each for 15 and 20 starts, and $25,000 each for 25 and 30 starts. He had asked for $1.45 million in arbitration and had been offered $1,025,000. Got a $1.2 million, one-year contract...New York has one player remaining in arbitration. Pitcher Shawn Chacon asked for $4.15 million and was offered $3.1 million.

Very good, they went with a figure right in the middle of the Yankees' offer and Small's proposal. He deserves all of that for saving the Yankees' asses last year.

I'd offer Chacon 3Y/$10M today.
That isn't a bad idea. Hopefully he will be signed before the hearing, but Chacon did not have the look of a 1-year wonder in 2005. If only a heart transplant could be done from Chacon to Pavano...............

congrats to Aaron Small after an amazing 2005. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in 2006.....long relief...spot starter.....an occasional middle relief appearence when a double play is needed.

I doubt Chacon would accept such an offer. He has the makings of a very good pitcher, hopefully he realizes his potential and continues to succeed in 2006.

Small is signed:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/baseball/mlb/wires/01/24/2010.ap.bba.yankees.small.0214/ This is good for all involved. If he doesn't continue to pitch well, it's not a huge loss. If he contributes and wins 10 more games it'll be the cheapest wins we get. Very likable guy; I hope he does well. I really like his pace, as I'm sure the fielders do as well.

From the link,
His agreement leaves the Yankees with a projected opening-day payroll of $195 million to $197 million, down about $10 million from their record-setting figure at the end of last season.
I like it.

This is really good news. I think Chacon has a chance to be a great pitcher. He's got great stuff, and it seems like ever since he's been a Yankee, he's had total confidence in it.

So whats Chacon's deal? I thought that since this was his 6th year that he's up for Free Agency, but I've heard that because service time is determined by days in the majors each year and not actual starts that he has one more year before free agency. The person I heard this from could very well be talking out of their ass. Anybody know for sure?

What do you mean?Salary divided by wins. We often spend 1 million dollars per win on starters. Chacon can deliver at a third of that price, or less.

That's what I thought too. I was wondering why since Chacon's wins last season weren't that way at all. He seemed to be the guy that pitched every time the Yankees only score 2 or 3 runs.
