I agree. He bolsters our lineup and hopefully we signed him to a reasonable contract in those 4 years. Not to mention he improves the most glaring need coming into this offseason: outfield defense.

Good god you'd think we signed Barry Bonds to an 8 year deal
IF it's four years, I won't be upset, but there is not only doubt on whether it's a 4 or 5 year deal, but also IF there is a deal at all.
Four years. It's not that long. It's a presidential term. I mean, come on. These past five with W have just flown right by, right? I mean... not like there's been any problems there, right? I predict the (potential) Johnny Damon era in New York will go as well as George W Bush's first four years in the white house. At least.
(I actually am in favor of this deal despite all the rampant sarcasm and liberalism in that paragraph.)
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Well, whatever. He'll be good for two years. It better be a front-heavy deal so we can trade him after two years.
Defensively boston will be better w/o Damon when they trade for Jeremy Reed. Offensively it will hurt them.
Here ya go.
Accept it for what it is---good news. (Hey, for those who say he'll suck in the 4th year--if he helps us to a WS win, I don't much give a sheet what he does the other three years....after all, we haven't won in 5, so 1 in 4 will do ;) )

I LOVE what Cash did this offseason. He held onto the young guys, built a kicka*s bullpen, and acquired the best available CF. Our payroll is still going to be less than last season...whats not to like?
Were all the Damon-haters whining like this when the Yanks acquired Clemens? Personally, I like this deal.
This allows the Yankees not to rush any of their talented young outfielders until 2009. The Yankees at that time will be done with Giambi, thus they can move Matsui from LF to DH and then play Damon in LF for the 2009 season.
Yup. Personally, I'm gonna feel a lot better now when he pops one into the short porch. Should be better on the vocal chords and larynx.

I like this move. Damon fills a hole and Yankees had a big hole in CF. We didn't lose any prospects and we didn't trade any of our starting pitchers. 4 years seems pretty reasonable to me. Welcome aboard Johnny.

This is going to make for a GREAT game when the Yanks first play in Boston in '06!
You can't lose FA compensation picks. The Yankees lose their own first round pick (late 20s), and their own second round pick for Farnsworth...
BTW, Damon just confirmed it himself on WBZ. Yankees apparently showed a lot more love than the Red Sox...So that means the Red Sox take over the Braves pick (our original - #28)?

I would have loved it if it were 3y/$40-45M - even thought AAV would have been higher, we'd be less likely to be stuck in the same Bernie Williams situation we have now....
But you have to admit - for the next few years, our lineup should be stacked:
Damon
Jeter
ARod
Giambi
Sheffield
Matsui
Posada
Cano
Williams/DH
Not too shabby for 06 and maybe 07. Beyond that it's anyone's guess....

This deal is fine for right now.
The only concern is whether or not, like CJM said, this will be Bernie II by the end of the contract. A three-year contract for around $10 mil per would have been fine.

The Yankees will definitely not trade a pitcher until late March now. They can wait and let the market for pitching come to them.

Bernie is 37 now, Brian Giles is 35 at the start of next season. Damon has not spent a day on the DL in his life. He's a line drive hitter who's likely to hook plenty of balls into the short porch like he did in the ALCS.
His salary is very fair considering the other deals this offseason, and equal to Matsui's. It is also not outlandish enough that he would be untradable, see A-Rod, Giambi, Jeter, Mussina.
When the other options are Bubba Crosby, and platoon player in Michaels, and a player in Reed who is a big time question mark (and who knows if we could acquire). Damon at this few years is the right move
We still have the chips to trade for a corner outfielder (which will be easier than center fielder), to push Sheff to DH and make the defense even better.
Best offseason of Cashman's career.

Because that's what Seattle threw out there.
This would've been a good deal 3-4 years ago. Too much money.
Why does everyone care about the money like its yours or something?
Either you like the move or you don't.
Welcome Johnny. Please remove your hair at the door...
You know, there's nothing I hate worse than these rules that the Yankees have to keep their hair short, and no facial hair. Does everyone forget how much fun Boomer Wells was? If you ever wanted to loosen up a tense clubhouse, let them grow their hair and goatees. No one will care if they look back at a team that was a bit looser and played with less tension. I really dislike the stupid rule.
But, I know what you're saying, you're just referencing the rule - this wasn't a rip on you, F the T. Just a rip on the rule.

However, i think i'm going to take a break from here since people cant seem to have real discussions about this without going "f*ck" this sucks cashman is a puppet hes a red sox gawd omg. Keep on panicing for no reason.
I agree with you about some of the immature comments. Some worry about the 4th year when the Yankees can either trade him or slide him over to LF while Matsui plays DH in 2009. By that time, the Yankees can have two younger outfielders ready for CF and RF.

For this year, absolutely. The problem is that it is not a one year deal. You have to look at the bigger picture, and this could bite back hard down the road. If he has one Bernie year, it could be okay. If he has 1.5 or 2.....
Yeah, and if we sign Torrii Hunter next season, people will bitch. If we trade Cano and Wang for Kotsay, people will bitch. No one is satisfyed unless we trade Sturtze for Michaels (come on, they arent that stupid)
