View Full Version : Offseason poetry and word games time
It's been a while since we amused ourselves this way. Write either a haiku or a first-letter poem about the Yankees or baseball. For example:
A first letter poem uses the first letters of a word each as their own word, like:
Cano
Achieves
Nice
Offense
or one I remember well from the 2000 offseason:
Mariano
Ends
Their
Season
A haiku is three lines, 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third:
Panic in the streets
The bullpen is depleted!
But wait, there is Mo...
Golden faces shine
Honor, courage, history

I can't wait for some of the responses, we have some creative people on here. I especially love Haiku. IIRC, James, aka Stick Michael was pretty good at them.

Always
Relishing in
Off the field
Drama
Yeah, I s*ck.
For some reason most of the ones I have come up with are sarcastic, like:
Rag
Arm
Never
Did
Yankify
Always
Relishing in
Off the field
Drama
Yeah, I s*ck.
 What is funny about that is that is EXACTLY what I thought when I heard about him pulling out of the WBC. Everything turns into a drama around him. (Which is fine as long as he keeps putting up MVP numbers. Kinda reminds me of Reggie that way...)
Speaking of which, how about:

Easier than riding a bike or flying a kite
Hitting the sinker of Jaret Wright
The ball leaves the bat, he remains stagnant

Off the knee so he fell
Another 2 months on the DL
As Girardi eats his macaroni, and Torre eats his spumoni

Here are a few on the "rivalry" in 2005:
Ninth inning drama
The Sox Hit Mariano!
Jeter: That's All Foulke...
Big smiles at Fenway
Standing ovation for Mo
It's only April
Schilling takes the ball
Stands on the mound "the closer"
Sheff: boom! A-rod: boom!
We used to love him
But wearing red socks makes Wells
A big tub of lard
Another playoff?
The East could end in a tie...
Thank you Indians!

Here are a few on the "rivalry" in 2006:
Where's Mueller? Millar?
Johnny's on our side this time
Rivalry no more
Arroyo will plunk
Varitek will wear his mask
Sox will finish third
"The Rivalry is on Vacation"
Its the middle of September, playoffs are near,
but for the time being the Sox are here
The stadium is packed, fans in blue, some in red
Hot dogs and beer to keep well fed
Play ball calls the ump for game one of the set
and he steps to the plate in front of the net
Sox win the first, Yanks take game 2
sox win game 3 and the series, oh no, boo hoo
but why do i not care, the yanks fan i am
i'd usually be frantic, but i dont give a damn
something is different this time around
i wasnt so nervous when the pitchers were on the mound
aha, i know why it doesnt feel the same
the division had no effect from the outcome of these games
the yankees are in first, just like always,
but this time a series win pulled the sox to within 3 of the jays
I love it.
Meanwhile, I decided to incorporate some of my sox haiku into my Yankees year end recap on http://www.gothambaseball.com -- yes, it's the entire Yankees year in review, all in haiku...

Excellent recap, beautifully done, ctan.
You nailed these (plus a few more) out of the park:

Even Doug Waechter looks like
