The Yankees are one of four teams interested in signing Roberto Hernandez, said agent Alan Hendricks.

The 41-year-old Hernandez is seeking a two-year deal. Anything is possible in this market.

Are the Yankees really after Roberto Hernandez? I might give the guy a one-year deal, but I think two years could be a bit risky at his age. Still, he would be another option for the pen if not too expensive.

i would give him a shot

NYPost said we offered him a contract allready. If we trade away Sturtze Hernandez is an upgrade.

This is a horrible idea. It is obvious that his great performance last year was an aberration. The guy, over his career, has always given up more hits than innings pitched and posted an ERA in the mid 4's. I don't see what he adds to our bullpen.

He is better then Sturtze and at worst can do the same job.

As a replacement for Sturze, he is an upgrade. I would do one year only.

It said we made him a proposal, not an offer, and its George King so it probably means that Cashman just called the Hendricks Brothers and stated the Yankees interest. Given the fiscal responsibility that Cashman has shown I can't see them giving Hernandez a huge deal so he will probably go elswhere for more money. It is interesting that Cashman called Hendricks about Hernandez, maybe a pre-cursor to Clemens who has the same agent(s). After all, isn't that sort of how he got Justice and A-Rod.

I'd give him a one year contract, but I still need Taverez for the 7th.

This is false for his entire career, but it is true for the four seasons prior to last year.

Taking 2005 out, he's posted an ERA above 4.00 in five of the past seven seasons. And the last time he posted a sub-3.00 ERA was in 1997.

He's had a nice career, but I'd be willing to bet that 2005 was a fluke and that he hasn't discovered the fountain of youth at age 40.

According to WFAN Hernandez opts for 1-year deal with Pirates.

I'd go after Seanez instead.

I don't think he is. Either way, he won't be here next year. I'm hoping for Seanez or Tavarez.

And yet another aging reliever is on teh Yankee radar:

The Yankees are interested in free agent Rudy Seanez, but they believe he'd prefer to head back to Atlanta.

Seanez could be a candidate to close for the Braves after such an outstanding year in San Diego. Still, he's too injury prone to be anyone's top choice in that role.

What about Looper?

I, too, would rather see Hernandez over Sturtze.

And one more lefty.

He'd be a great choice. Apparently, the Phillies and Pirates are after him.

WFAN reporting he's signed with the Pirates for a 1-year deal. They are probably going to give him a chance to close.

Wow...dodged a bullet there. Roberto Hernandez would have gotten lit up.

Phew, glad he went to Pittsburgh. If we do a trade like Sturtze for Michaels, then I'd like to see us sign Seanez and Dotel.

Why, is the 7th inning when you bring in the ineffective relief pitcher to punch a bullpen telephone????

The Pirates offered him $2.75 mil to our $2.5 mil

Oh well!

I get it, if he's more willing to go to the Pirates then he's not a good fit for the Yankees and probably did them a favor by going there.

It's likely that the possibility of being a closer again was the deciding factor for Hernandez. If he has a successful year as a closer in 2006, he'd be able to cash in for bigger money in 2007.
