View Full Version : Should we try for Gary Matthews Jr?

Now that Wilkerson is with the Rangers it seems that Texas has a surplus of centerfielders. Anyone think there's any chance we could pry matthews away from Texas? I know he's a light hitter but once again all we really need is an experienced glove.

Yes. And if not, then Bradley. And if not Bradley, then Michaels. And if not Michaels, then Reed. And if not Reed, then Granderson. And if not Granderson, then Jacque Jones. We need someone because going into next season with Bubba and Bernie as the two CFers just won't work.

He and Bradley are definitely worth a look, despite Bradley's offseason antics. I don't care about that, personally.

Meh. It depends how cheap he is. I'd be willing to give up a little more for a player like Michaels.

Sure, why not? But just like every other club we contact the price better not include Cano or Wang.

It'd be a good pick up but I still want Granderson over everyone...

Gary Matthews is like 31 years old so I doubt they'd be asking for either Wang or Cano.

That's what the Phillies were asking for a 29 year old platoon player.

Exactly, that seems to be everyone's asking price.

How is Matthews' defense?

I'd rather ask the Rangers about Wilkerson but I imagine they acquired him to keep him and if not, they'd want a lot since they traded Sori for him.

And that is exactly why Cashman is taking a wait and see attitude instead of letting us get shaken-down just for the sake of making a trade.

I said this last year and again during the July trade flurry, no team will do anything to make the Yanks better, period.
The Marlins gave away a few players for what amounts to a song but would'nt talk to Cashman unless Cano and Wang were on the table.
Last year, the Rockies "got rid of" Chacon and we got jobbed with Lawton. (I personally think the Cubs knew he had a steroid issue and allowed him to leave without saying anything)

The Yanks will need to do it with spit and polish until they shed some salary obligations. This might mean we go from Dimaggio, Mantle, Rivers, Williams to Bubba and Melky.

I wouldn't mind Matthews Jr. I would hope that with the CF market seeming to settle down he might come a little cheaper, especially given the surplus in Texas OF. Maybe for Henn straight up???

Considering how well he handles CF in Ameriquest, I would say his defense is above average.

Or, wait and get Corey Patterson for free after Dec. 20.
