So sad that a Yankee legend like Ruben is gone :( Who will get the clutch hits? More importantly who will get the clutch hamstring pulls?

Okay, but you're posting info in this forum that's not supposed to be here and you're saying that something will be in a paper without quoting your sources. It seems a little questionable as to where you're getting this info on Myers.

Getting back to my original post - Myers. From what I hear he retired and no one outside the organization got word till very late (12:30).. so in all likelihood we'll have to seek elsewhere for a lefty specialist.
Of course it is not out of the realm of possibility that a could state his desire to retire, not be offered arbitration and then have a change of heart, sign with another team (Clemens).

To be fair, Sierra was a good guy that did get his fair share of big hits for us. I didn't want him back, but he did a fairly good job while he was here.

Boy am I a jackass. A thousand apologies. I was completely wrong. I guess that's what happens when you eaves drop to half a phone conversation. Myers has not retired. Again, I'm sorry. I'm a jackass. I was not trying to dupe anyone.
He was not offered arbitration.... and according to Red Sox notes under Gordon Edes byline... The Yankees appear the front runner. Myers was surprised that the Sox accutaly never made him a formal offer.
Again, sorry.

I like Ruben. He's a good guy and he did have his share of big hits for us and I do agree he should never put on the Y's uniform again, but for some reason I started growing a dislike for him and Small this year.

GOODBYE SIERRA MIST
what a bunch of BS??? I understand giving it to Leiter, but how can the Yankees offer arbitration to Ramiro Mendoza? A guy who pitched one game last year, which by the way was a horrible game. Not only that, they choose to offer it to Bernie Williams over Ruben Sierra, when Ruben gave his blood, sweat, and tears for this organization??? Ruben has led all of your children down the right path, and this is the thanks he gets??? Today, December 8th, 2006 is my worst day as a Yankee fan, and also the worst day of my life. I hope they re-sign Bernie, I hope they give him 7 to 8 mill and I hope he bats .125, I also hope that they put him in a pinch hit situation where the playoffs are on the line, and he hits a lazy fly to center field, or pops out to the catcher. This guy isnt a good pinch hitter, and there are better options at DH. I do know Ruben Sierra will have a great year wherever he plays in 2006, and I will be there with him. The decision to bring back both Cashman and Bernie Williams shows that the Yankees are trying to live in the past, which is also why Stanton, Mendoza, and Tino came back in 2005. We once won many games and many rings w/ Bernie, but father time has caught up with him. Cashman is the same person who let Jeff Nelson go in 2000, and replaced him with nothing. He also mistreated Stanton in 2002 when he still pitched good, and Stanton's replacement lasted 1 year. He also let Cairo go instead of trying to work out a deal, and instead brought in Tony Womack. Brian Cashman has made many major mistakes over the past few seasons, they all started after 2001. Now the 6 million dollar question is what will happen to Sierra Mist? Can I continue to support a team that treats its players this way?? I have watched Cashman and the Yankees make bad trades, overpay many, many players because they had a great season 15 yrs ago, and let quality free agents walk for free too many times these past few seasons. I was already questioning the Yankees this offseason, so many Center Fielders available and Cashman just sitting there while they are all traded elsewhere. Well whether you like it or not, and there is also no denying it, Bernie will wind up in CF for a majority of the games in 2006. I can no longer listen to Sterling say "Well Bernie has 4 rings, he doent need to explain why he let that fly ball drop". I am going to spend this offseason now pondering my decision on whther or not to accept my arbitration offer to remain a fan of the NY Yankees. Never in my life have I been so confused, never have I been so frustrated. Ruben, we all love you and we will miss you, and I know deep down inside that the Yankees will try to get you back as a late season addition just for the playoffs, and I hope you reject that offer. Ruben Sierra came into our hearts in mid 2003, a time of need. He tore up the MLB in 2004 with his 17 HR and 64 RBI in about 100 games. He also had many clutch hits in 2005. We watched him hit his 300th HR, we saw walk off home runs, game winning sac flys, we watched so many clutch hits, so many great decisions, so much excitement when Ruben was at the bat. So I say to you Ruben, farewell sweet prince, may your nights be filled with pleasant dreams.

Well, SM, .............. words fail me. I hope you feel better soon? :dunno:
Someone is real upset.
Bernie, if he re-signs, will get 2 million, tops. He will be the 4th OF, and part time DH. Probably get in the area of 250-300 plate appearances.
I figure Leiter and Mendoza get minor league deals, and come to camp to win a spot, or retire, especially Al. Ramiro may actually go to AAA to get his arm strength back, but if he can't throw his hard sinker, he is useless.

I never want to see Bernie in the OF ever again...at least in a Yankee uniform. And its not like he would be a great DH either...his bat was below average last season.

So re-signing an old, injury prone, mediocre player who can't play defense just because he "gave his earth wind and fire..err I mean blood sweat and tears" is not trying to live in the past? Its living in the future? (Psst, im talking about Rube)

That's pretty messed up, a "We told you so." would've been more appropriate, but none of this is shocking. The Yankees weren't going to re-sign a bunch of players that didn't do much.

what a bunch of BS???
Dude, if Rube was so great how come he came and went through the years while the Yanks made sure they had Bernie, a team leader for years brought up through the organization, locked up. The only reason Bernie has declined this badly is due to injuries, in his prime he would've killed Sierra defensively and possibly offensively. Also are you just a Ruben Sierra fan or a Yankee fan because wishing that the Yanks would lose in a playoff clinching game is pretty damned cold if you're an NYY fan. We all loved Ruben when he played well but the fact is that is no longer the case. Deal with it. You'll always have the DVDs with his clutch hits and your freaking trading cards to get you by until he becomes a coach, and if you truly will banish yourself from the forum farewell fellow poster, and may your nights be filled with dreams of Ruben happily settling into retirement as a player and recognizing that he can do so much more as a non-playing member of an organization.

This turning into a joke, to sum things up though, Small is more valuable as a Yankee, than to be traded. As for Ruben Sierra, I am so confident that he will remain a Yankee, that if for some reason he is not on the Yankee roster in 2006, I will never post on this site again. Thats how confident I am that he will be back, its only 1 roster spot, and Joe likes him.
Come on, be a man of your word.

I'd say the "sweet prince" is more likely to be coaching in 2006, maybe even for the Yankees, then playing. Same might be true for Tino as well. As much as Tino has always been one of my favorite players it seems like he's just about reached the end of his career.

Uhm, if I'm not mistaken we traded Felix the Cat for Stanton with the Mets last year....so that was pretty much sh*t for sh*t. Who else would of taken Heredia???
He also let Cairo go instead of trying to work out a deal, and instead brought in Tony Womack.
Didn't Cairo blame his agent for the deal not getting done??
Anyway, thanks Tino, Rube and Flaherty for all your great efforts!

...and his WARP of 1.0. Seriously...he was barely a positive contributor in 2004, and last year, he wasn't even that (WARP of -0.2).
But the real question is...does Sierra enter the Hall of Fame as a Yankee, or a Ranger? ;)

The only reason I could see Mendoza getting offered arb is that they somehow saw something at the end of the season during bullpen sessions. Maybe he had a velocity increase. Thats the only reason I can see them offering Mendoza arb.

None of these guys I am too upset about losing. They were all old and unnecessary anymore, time to move on and find new replacements.
And as for the coaching thing: After Mattingly retires as Manager one day, I could see this as the coaching staff:
Jeter-Manager
Posada-Bench coach (Jeter's best friend)
Pettitte-Pitching coach
Mo-Bullpen coach
Paul O'Neill-Hitting coach
Tino-1st base coach
Brosius-3rd base coach
Then we can really live in the past! Haha, if any of those guys don't want the jobs, Clemens, Bernie, Knobby, and Cone can be there to take their places.

So I say to you Ruben, farewell sweet prince, may your nights be filled with pleasant dreams.

what a bunch of BS??? I understand giving it to Leiter, but how can the Yankees offer arbitration to Ramiro Mendoza? A guy who pitched one game last year, which by the way was a horrible game. Not only that, they choose to offer it to Bernie Williams over Ruben Sierra, when Ruben gave his blood, sweat, and tears for this organization??? Ruben has led all of your children down the right path, and this is the thanks he gets??? Today, December 8th, 2006 is my worst day as a Yankee fan, and also the worst day of my life. That dude was jacked. He bumped into me dancing at Onefiftyone and I went flying.
the organization acknowledged him with the millions of dollars he was paid.. some years he did not coming close to earning it.. it's time to turn the page and move on..
I agree, but my point is that Tino deserves better than to be lumped together with Embree, Lawton, and the other scrubs who weren't offered arbitration on deadline day.
That's an inappropriate dismissal for a great Yankee like Tino.
I'm not suggesting anything as silly as a Tino Martinez parade, (clearly, the fans have acknowledged his many contributions over the years), or anything as meaningless as a Steinbrenner press release through his spokesman, but some sort of official "thanks" from the Yanks does not seem like too much for ask for.
I hope Steinbrenner, Cashman, and Torre have contacted/or will contact Tino and offer him his props on his way out the door. That's all I'm saying.

I think you may be firing in anger a bit prematurely. I am sure the Yankees will publicly demonstrate their appreciation for Tino's past contributions somehow, someway. Perhaps with a coaching job somewhere, etc.
All you read was a report by a reporter summarizing who was offered arb and who wasn't. It wasn't an official release by the Yankees summarily dismissing Tino. What are you expecting? A "Thanks Tino" blimp circling NYC during the morning rush-hour?
I am sure that at some point Cashman, Torre and Steinbrenner will warmly recall Tino's productive years here, give him a job coaching in the minors, and thank him for being Tino. There is nothing to criticize the team for at this point.

Lumping Tino's name together with all the other Yankees who weren't offered arbitration is not a proper send-off.
I understand why publicly thanking Tino at this point is not the Yankees highest priority. However, I think it would have been a classy gesture if the Yanks publicly thanked Tino yesterday when they announced who would/would not be offered arbitration. Moving on, dude.

Um, this was simply a list of players not offered arbitration.
Should the FO have alerted the media? "look, these are the guys we're not offering arb to, except..when you mention Tino, seperate him from the rest because he means more to us as a person than the others."
Just calm down. If you think times are bad, just think of Sierra Mist and what he must be going through.
Lumping Tino's name together with all the other Yankees who weren't offered arbitration is not a proper send-off.
But that is my point -- the Yankees did not do that. It was simply the way it was reported in the press. The arbitration deadline was midnight last night. How do you know there isn't an interview going on right now in Dallas where Cashman is saying something like: "Tino was a great Yankee and was a part of so much success here, we wish him well in the future." My point is we don't know that yet, because the deadline just came and went this morning...
I wasn't looking to call you out or start a big deal about this....was just trying to help assuage your concerns over your perceptions about the way Tino is being handled. Give them time. The Yankees seldom handle a send-off badly for someone of Tino's stature.

In the big picture, this is a very minor issue. I figure they'll do right by Tino, if they haven't already.

It's too bad Sierra was injured so early last season. I personally felt that he gave the team so much in his last stint as a Yankee until he landed on the DL in early May. Perhaps the F.O. feels, at his age, he will not rebound from that injury enough to be effective next season; but I do feel he was one of the best pinch hitters and bench players we've had since Tim Raines.
And I am a big Bernie Williams fan - he's my favorite player. I'm glad The Yanks offered him arbitration and hope he can regain enough form to hit .280 and drive in 80 or so runs in a part-time role, however, I do not think Bernie is suited to be a pinch hitter or a true bench player. I think he needs to play regularly to be effective - The Yanks need a good bench. Sierra gave them that - something they had lacked for a couple of seasons before he got here.
I am also a big fan of Brian Cashman but I can't say that I can take issue with Sierra Mist's description of his job performance the last 5 or so years. Unfortunately, much of it rings true.
I'll never forget that hit Johnny Flats had last year.

I'm sadden to see how this thread went. I mean, first of all SM- yeah he was writing out of anger but honestly, he wrote how he felt. I honestly think Sierra had some great things about him and this is coming from a person who has grown to see him play for her two favorite teams (the Mariners and the Yankees). We all write out of anger one time or another but honestly, SM just went a little to far. This is baseball, things change. For example, one of my favorite all-time players is on the list, Tino Martinez. Yes, Tino's going to always be one of my favorite players and I'll always remember the good memories about the player and they'll continue to live on. I've also had the chance to meet Flaherty and Lawton and that was an amazing experience, they are both incredible individuals. Embree, wasn't someone who I really cared for; however, as a Yankee fan you get learn how to respect most of the guys who put on the uniform. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that these men are people who I've really enjoyed to watch especially Martinez and I really hope that one day he'll come back to the Yankees and coach.

I'm sadden to see how this thread went. I mean, first of all SM- yeah he was writing out of anger but honestly, he wrote how he felt. ....., SM just went a little to far.
A little too far is undervaluing how far he actually went, Brooke.

I dont think we have to worry about that anymore. Sierra Mist appears to have left NYYfans.com because of what happened to Ruben.

Is anyone as concerned as I am now?...it seems like the Yankees are asleep at the wheel this winter. I know, lets not jump and spend tons of $$ like we used to, but something shoule be happenning...The Bernie signing aside, the only thing that happened is the signing of Mike Myers. Huh?
And to make it worse, I'm reading today that Boston is looking at Tejada, Lidge and of all people....The Rocket!
I have confidence in Cashman that he's in charge and has a strategy to land a CF and pitching, but my confidence is getting a little shaky. Does anyone else feel this way?
C'mon make me feel better!

Did you even read what Cashman said? The free agent market right now is slim pickings and he's not going to spend money just because other teams are. Cash is in charge, not Steinbrenner, which is precisely why we're not throwing money around left and right picking up everyone and anyone. He knows what he's doing....................relax.

Seriously things are goingto be okay.....We still have a very good team.....We are holding onto our prospects and our future.....It is not even Christmas yet.....Cashman does a good job in waiting and getting the best deals, he has not made them yet because they would be bad for the team....He shouldn't make a deal just for the sake of making one...

The biggest change from revenue sharing, and I think you're seeing the affect of it more this year than last, is that it's not just NY and Boston that has money to spend anymore so players can take other things into consideration when deciding where to play, ex. closer to family, weather, etc. They no longer have just a couple of teams to choose from to get the big payday and that has made the market more spread out and it's left fewer options for NY then in the past.
I expected to see Bellhorn on this list but I must have missed something, is he still under contract for another year or did they already offer him arb?

Well, for starters we have a HOF third baseman and shortstop in their prime, a lights out closer, a dominant lefty starter, 3 all star hitters in Sheff, Matsui, and Giambi, and two rising stars in Cano and Wang. :)
I am worried that we haven't filled our needs in CF yet, but I'm also glad they aren't just signing people for the sake of signing them. I wouldn't be surprised if they are waiting to maybe make a trade for a CF'er during the season by a trade. I do wish they get started on finding some bullpen arms though.

Oh well, I'm sure they'll get more out of Sierra than they got out of Sosa last year. :)

But we do have to say that we will miss some of Ruben's clutch hitting off the bench...Like last year against the rangers when we got injure after the great hit that brought us back on top. But he is getting old and more injuries will come, hopefully someone can refill his spot off the bench.

what a bunch of BS???

Sierra Mist: The biggest mystery on NYYFans. He/She refused to divulge anything about him/herself. SM wouldn't tell anyone what their age or sex was.

I swear - he posted some of his ridiculous "Aaron Small Is God & RJ Is The Devil"-type stuff one day, next day it's in a Sherman column almost verbatim.
