View Full Version : What about Todd Zeile?

Bringing him back for another go-round with the Yanks couldn't hurt. Good, solid utility infielder with some occasional pop. Since he was such a nice fill-in his first time around, why not reward him with a second try?

Well, it hurts that he didn't play last year...

Cairo is the utility man we should be going after and if it's first base you are worrying about and are not thrilled with Phillips, think Travis Lee or J. T. Snow, Zeile has no place on this team.

I admit I don't even know for which team Todd Zeille played last season. If I had to guess, I would have guessed that he had retired.

But that line of yours should signal that we should have one all encompassing thread
called "Trades proposed by fans".

Besides the fact that he wasn't an overwhelming player to begin with, and now he's one-plus years removed from retirement, he didn't really enjoy his time w/ the Yankees.

I hope this is a poor attempt at humor. Zeile retired over a year ago, do a little research before floating stuff like this.

File under, been there, done that. He was old and ineffective when we had him in 2003(?) why should we get him again, 3 years older?

I wouldn't mind seeing Zeile as a first base coach.

As a player he's a has been retread and we have had far too many of those in the last five or so years

I hate to rant about threads like this, but do the people who post them actually watch baseball? The Yankees, by all accounts, had a pretty crap-tastic bench last year. And at no point, even as I watched Tino or Sierra flail hopelessly at another pitch, did I say: "you know what this team needs: some Todd Ziele."

On the other hand, if my memory is right, Ziele is the all-time HR leader among players whose last name ends with a Z.

Funny Todd Zeile Story…

I’m at a Tuesday night game, sitting behind home plate when Zeile saunters up to the plate like he’s God’s gift to baseball. You know those Tuesday night games when no one is there and you can hear everything that everyone says? Well, I decide to let him know how I fell about him and all of the teams he has played for, come to think of it, it was most likely the 4 quarts of Budweiser I had downed during the course of the game. He’s at the plate and I’m going right down the seemingly endless list, (Insert team here) SUCK, on and on. The laughter grows with each team. Well, wouldn’t you know it, he hits a friggin’ bomb into the leftfield stands, circles the bases and gives me just about the dirtiest look I’ve ever gotten from anyone in my life while he touches the dish. Talk about laughter! I wasn’t fazed though, what else would a real Bomber fan do, I let him know that he STILL SUCKED!!!! :P

It's stories like these that are precisely the reasons WHY he should be playing for us next year. ;)

Last I checked Zeile was retired and enjoying his directorial debut for his low-budget flick. Plus, my impression was he didn't like his first go-round with the Yankees so why would he come back? Also, remember the Yankees are getting younger now so that pretty much eliminates him for coming back, completely.

Tom Tresh was a pretty good Yankee. And for a lot longer than Zeile. He has experience playing Short, Third, and Outfield. We might be able to lure him out of retirement.

As I recall, when Zeile played for the Yankees he was probably the most hated member of the team. Someone on the board used to have a name for him that was funny, but I can't remember it. (Maybe it was Toad Zeile.) It seems like Torre would not stop playing him even though his batting average fell below .200 and everyone was just screaming at Torre. Finally, Cashman ended our misery by releasing him. He was horrible.

That's why I'd like to see next year's team Torre-proof. You don't want guys like Zeile, Heredia, Leiter and the like hanging around or he'll use them. C. J. $hitkowski was another player Torre would not stop using. I'm afraid that might happen this year if he starts to play Bernie Williams in CF and removes Crosby from the lineup. Cashman has to be very careful with whom he includes on the team.

Wait a minute. Whitey Ford is available. We could use another southpaw in the rotation.

Maybe Yogi can catch. I know he's older now, but he and Jorge could split the DH duties so they can both get some rest.

I think Sparky Lyle is available for the bullpen.

Unfortunately, Mickey Mantle is no loger available for center field, but Mickey Rivers is. What a great leadoff hitter! And a base stealer too.

We could use a utility infielder. How about Phil Linz? OK, maybe Chicken Stanley.

I bet Roy White would be happy to come back in a reserve role in the outfield. And Winfield. He could provide some pop off the bench, right?

Why are you leaving Gene Michael's name out of this litany? He can play 2B, SS & 3B and is already under contract with the Yankees.

Any, while we are at it, why not bring back Luis Sojo for another run off the bench - isn't he still playing winter ball?
