I haven't seen anything in a while in print. But you know with the winter meetings starting up, somebody will publish something saying the Yanks need him in CF.

My saying it would have about as much credence as Peter Gammons or George King saying it.

No Crowds Arguements

Too Old
Too fragile
Too much of a jerk
Too much money unless cincy pays 100% of his salary
Too many superstars already, we need a Bubba Crosby type player in CF.
Not a true Yankee
Dissed George

Yes Crowd Arguements

KEN GRIFFEY? Heck YES!

A couple of seasons ago, I would be all about getting Griff, but he's just too old and fragile at this point. It's funny, I was just coming on to suggest we trade for another Reds outfielder...

Willy Mo Pena anyone?

Including him in the trade for The Retarded Train Whistler was a Cashman gaffe, but getting him back could be a good move. According to Aaron Gleeman at Foxsports, he recently stated that he is tired of sharing time with Griffey and Dunn and Kearns and if the team cannot promise him regular play, he would like to be traded. He's only 23 now and over the past 699 AB's he's racked up 45 HR's and 117 RBI's. The power numbers could drop leaving the bandbox in Cincy, but he's got potential. Anyone know if he has any defensive skills? Could he work in center?

No thanks. I want someone who can play a full season.

Not acquiring Griffey a couple of years ago in retrospect was one of the Yankee's better moves.

I haven't checked the price of dinosaur bones recently, (and we know how much Steinbrenner likes to collect dinosaur bones) so I wonder how much Griff would cost the Yanks, and how easily he might shatter being shipped to NY.

A simple answer to your question
NO

Please close thread - griffey to the yankees has been started 20 times during the past few years. We want young players.

I would agree Wily Mo Pena would be a much better choice than Junior hes 23, and has great power i dont think he has the speed to be a center fielder but we could move him over to left field and put Matsui back in Center. Who would we have to trade though, Cano, Wang, and more prospects

Hey, I'm Ken Griffey Junior! I was the best player in the entire decade of the 1990s! However, in the new milennium I just can't stop getting injured and my production has suffered the way your health would if you got hit by a Mack truck! I actually had a pretty good year last year, but I couldn't finish it without getting injured and I can't play defense anymore! My ass still leaks blood from one of my numerous surgeries! And the very best part is, the Cincinnati Reds owe me 57.5 million dollars over the years 2009-2024! How funny would it be if someone else actually traded for me and had to pay that contract! Talk about waiting until you can rebuild!

He deftly combines poor jumps, and rout running with a Mannyesque level of concentration and effort. He has DH written all over him (and would be fine here in that capacity).

Thanks for the info. I've seen enough ineptitude in center the past couple of seasons to last a lifetime. Willie Mo is a no go.

Why don't we debate whether Mr. Gritty Bubba Crosby should get 500 ABs in CF next year instead? Or make a list of a 100 reasons why the Yankees should re-sign Ruben Sierra.

Mr. Juan Pierre is faster than Ken Griffey sr's son.

If there is no basis for a rumor thread, like the fact that when Griffey was asked about getting traded to the Yankees a year ago (he shot it down), why start a thread?

Exactly; I'd take Griffey any day over Crosby, no matter how scrappy Bubba is.

Depends on how much of his salary the Reds will eat.

DiMaggio5CF

I think it's a great idea to get Griffey to patrol CF in Yankee Stadium.

Let's start with the stats.

Our most attractive options are Brad Wilkerson and Milton Bradley. Griffey has a higher batting average, OBP, and Slugging Percentage than either of these guys -- both in 2005 and career. In fact, Griffey's 2005 OPS dwarfs the same stat for these two guys, over 100 points higher than Bradley's and nearly 200 points better than Wilkerson's.

Now let's go to the contract.

Griffey makes $12.5 per year. The Yankees can probably get the Reds to eat $2 million annually, which will bring Griffey's price tag down to $10.5 million per season. On top of that, $6.5 million annually is deferred, so it would only cost the Yankees $4 million per year for the remaining three years of the contract.

And as far as age goes, Griffey just turned 36. So if it was okay to give Brian Giles, who will turn 35 before Opening Day and isn't even really a centerfielder, a three-year contract for $10 million per, why is it not okay to pick up Griffey -- who posted a higher OPS than Giles did last year -- at less than half that for the same amount of time?

I didn't even want Griffey when he was good. That lame-ass story about being dissed - first it was Billy Martin, then it was George, then it was Babe Ruth's ghost - the story changed every time I heard it.

What cemented my dislike for Griffey was an appearance he made at an All-Star Game back during his heyday. Not only was he the only player to complain about having to "fly in and do Home Run Derby", but kept a pouty, pissed-off puss on his face throughout the entire proceedings while everyone else was laughing and having a good time. Like he was being SOOOO put out by having to do Home Run Derby. Nobody forced him. But rather than bow out, he did it anyway and acted like a baby.

He even brought up the flight thing during his post-round interview. He acted like such a selfish jerk that I was completely turned off on him forever.

But, if you want an aging, over-priced, injury-prone, shelfish jerk on the team, I guess he's a good fit.

Griffey cant play center anymore

NewEraYanks2527
12-05-05, 11:31 PM
Griffey cant play center anymore Now that is a little harsh. Just because he can't run without getting injured doesn't mean he can't play center, the facxt that he can't stay healthy doesn't mean he can't play center, the fact that he can't run down a fly ball without going on the 15-day DL does no mean he can not play center. I mean come on 38, how could any of those things mean he can't play center?
