Thanks for starting this thread, BB55. This is going to be a really great bowl season...usually there are just a couple that I want to watch, but this year there are quite a few. The 2 non-BCS games I'm most looking forward to are Michigan/Nebraska and Miami/LSU...both should be really good.

You're welcome, Tal. :)

I also can't wait to watch those two games, but I'll also watch the Iowa/Florida, Texas Tech/Alabama, and Oregon/Oklahoma.

Some very interesting matchups there. Three out of the four BCS games (USC vs. Texas, Notre Dame vs. Ohio State, and Penn State vs. Florida State are very interesting, and West Virginia vs. Georgia isn't bad, though I think that it's the least interesting of those four by far. Miami vs. LSU is a BCS-caliber matchup, and Games like Auburn vs. Wisconsin, Louisville vs. Virginia Tech, Florida vs. Iowa, Alabama vs. Texas Tech, Michigan vs. Nebraska, Boise State vs. Boston College, and Oregon vs. Oklahoma are interesting matchups as well. It should be a very fun bowl season. :)

I also can't wait to watch those two games, but I'll also watch the Iowa/Florida, Texas Tech/Alabama, and Oregon/Oklahoma.Florida's going to be looking for revenge against Iowa from last year's Outback Bowl...I was surprised to see them take the same 2 teams from last year.

Being a Big 12 guy, I'm also interested in the Texas Tech/Alabama & Oklahoma/Oregon games. Tech is going to have a tough time scoring more than 17-20 points against the Bama D, but that might be enough considering the Bama O hasn't been able to do much all season.

I'll be attending the Motor City Bowl in Detroit again this year (last year UConn won). This time it's Akron vs. Memphis-- because the Big 10 didn't have enough bowl-eligible teams.

And this year may have the most interesting slate of BCS games yet. Two undefeated teams going head-to-head for the national title, the two winningest coaches in D1 football against each other, and of course OSU-ND, which have two of the biggest fan bases in the country.

AustinTXHorn

Tech/Alabama is probably the most interesting non-BCS game to me. The clash of styles will be crazy. Alabama's amazing defense and invisible offense against Mike Leach's great offense and pretty good defense.

I actually think Tech wins. My theory is that if you give Mike Leach a month to prepare for somebody, he will find and expose your weakness defensively.

Ohio State/ND (I think Ohio State wins by 10-ish) and Oregon/OU are also going to be fun games to watch. The Holiday Bowl is always fun to watch.

Vince Young calling his team "gangsta" might be the funniest thing I've heard in a while...

If he wants to see gangsta, he should take a walk outside the 5 block halo that surrounds SC.

I think Spurrier should get consideration for Coach of the Year.

It may be a good game, but I would like to be playing in one of the bigger bowls. I doubt that USC will blow Texas out, I don't USC's defense is good enough to hold down Texas enough for a blowout, I'd be shocked if both teams weren't at least in the 30s, these two teams are scoring machines.

BC is pulling out all the stops for today's game.

BOISE, Idaho — A Boston College football player who skipped his scheduled Brighton arraignment on a drunken driving charge yesterday was allowed to stay with his team for this afternoon’s big game against Boise State University after his coaches ran interference with the court.

The deal for defensive end Jeff Burns, who could have faced an arrest warrant for blowing off court but instead will be allowed to appear Friday, infuriated a leading drunken driving victims’ advocate.

The same thing happened with Notre Dame this year with Rashon Powers Neal getting arrested for an OUI when he went home for a few days in September. He was suspended from the team for the rest of the year.

Even though the Eagles are no stranger to play Bowl Games in an opponents backyard, they never played a game in Idaho before, especially in the blue turf.

Boise St. is 4-0 in Bowl Games at Bronco Stadium and haven't lost a game since 2001.

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional...rticleid=118902 (http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=118902)

The same thing happened with Notre Dame this year with Rashon Powers Neal getting arrested for an OUI when he went home for a few days in September. He was suspended from the team for the rest of the year.

I'm surprised BC handled it the way they did. They should have sent him right back to Boston after he skipped the arraignment and didn't tell the coaches until they landed in Boise.

Rutgers alums....great sources. Now let's get back to reality shall we Mr. Rutgers/Miami fan?

First of all...let's see what Rutgers did to try and encourage people to attend.

Because the number of tickets sold is so important, some schools are trying creative ways to boost numbers. Rutgers, for example, is headed to the Insight Bowl to play Arizona State on Dec. 27, its first bowl game in 27 years. To entice students to make the trip to Phoenix, the school offered them free tickets, and 350 of them accepted. In addition, the state of New Jersey and Rutgers alumni will randomly award $300 stipends to 275 student-ticket holders.

Great way to spend the citizens of New Jersey tax dollars.

Next a report on the actual sale of tickets by Rutgers itself.

Rutgers, playing in its first bowl in 27 years, has sold about 7,000 for the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz.

Attendance for this year's game. 45,536. The attendance for last year's game? 45,917 fans. Let's not forget that it was Arizona State playing almost a home game this year and Ty Willingham had been fired last year for ND YET that game drew more and the total allotment of tickets for the game were taken by Notre Dame (notice that wasn't the case for Rutgers or your other team Miami again this year). Pesky facts, hey Captain Yankee?

Fast forward a year......

"In my 13 years of the bowl, this is the hottest ticket I’ve ever seen, the most demand for it, and that includes three championship games," said Shawn Schoeffler, Fiesta Bowl spokesman.

Actually money wasn't given by the taxpayers. YOU should get your facts straight before posting. That money was donated by YOU GOT IT---Rutgers alum and was solicited as private donations from the AD Robert Mulcahey. And once again you choose to slander Miami? Miami is a small private school. Your comparison makes ZERO sense---especially because Miami is located in a state with two other football programs (at schools like FSU and UF that are nearly double Miami's size). Stats:

2005 Freshmen enrollment:
UM - 2,276
UF - 6,750
FSU - 7,017

Over 50 years, the number of students and alumni produced (assuming long lives for everyone):
UM - 113,800
UF - 337,500
FSU - 350,850

That is a LARGE freshman class at UM...typically their freshman classes (up until about 5 years ago was about 1400-1500).

Yet again, you're WRONG CY. The mercy rule should be in effect by now.

You do need to do your research. Alumni didn't pay the whole bill. The taxpayers helped. The title of this article, "Bowl trip costly, so N.J. pays"

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/1228rutgers28.html

At least part of Jessica Rizzolo's $700 plane ticket, $115 Hyatt hotel room and $10 Aztec-style souvenir necklaces can be written off the Rutgers student's tab. Her university and the state of New Jersey are picking up part of her trip to see the football team in the Insight Bowl.

She's not the only one: New Jersey's acting governor, the school and several alumni doled out more than $105,000 to help bankroll some 350 students' trek across the country.

Acting Gov. Richard Codey "is an avid sports fan and youth basketball coach . . . so he has been really supportive and proud of how they are doing," said Kelley Heck, the governor's spokeswoman. "He knew this was a once-in-30-year opportunity."

So, you were wrong about the alumni paying for the whole thing and the fact that Rutgers had a bigger fan presence than Notre Dame from last year.

FYI- Notre Dame enrolled 1,985 people for the class of 2009. It also had over 45,000 requests for tickets from the alumni and faculty for the Fiesta Bowl this year.

It's SMALLER than Miami when it comes to class size, but in your mind it's ok to rip on a school that is smaller in class size but it's not to criticize a school that has a larger one? Ok CY.

FSU might be a 5 hour drive away and UF could be 8 hours away. The fact is the alumni of Miami don't travel to games at home or bowl games.

I mentioned Miami in a throw away line in my large post. I'm not mentioning Miami again and again or creating threads that are focused on slandering the school.

For whatever reason, you're obsessed with Notre Dame, and you don't care what you have to do to try and criticize it. Usually, it's filled with inaccurate information.

Apparently BC was pretty pissed off after they attended a banquet Monday which turned into a Boise State pep rally. After the game coach Tom O'Brien had these comments...

''We come out here and all the things we go through, we go to a banquet that turns into a pep rally," fumed BC coach Tom O'Brien. ''I didn't have to say anything to this team. I ought to thank the mayor and people of Boise. They did everything to get this [BC] team ready to play football. I've been to 19 bowl games in my life and I've never seen anything like that in my life when we sat through that banquet here.

''The pep rally was the next night," O'Brien added. ''You don't disrespect the best player on the opposite team by making fun of his name and having everybody in the audience laugh at him."

Considering these were made after his team won the game, O'Brien must have been pretty upset by all of this.

I only saw the first half, but I couldn't believe the game came down to the final play, BC was up 24-0 at the half.

About $25,000 came from "so-called" taxpayer money for this. It came from a budget excess from the Dept. of Community Affairs. As stated in the article--the MAJORITY came from the RU athletic director and alumni donors ($125K of the $150K). And once again we are comparing apples to oranges. Miami's alumni (up until about the 1980s) didn't support football because there was no football program to speak of until then. We aren't talking about a school with a history of football success (nor as much of an emphasis as Notre Dame's) or one with a (shall we say this instead of bandwagon fans) "national following" as Notre Dame. Think about it...what else is there to do in South Bend? If the football team stinks---you are in for a long winter. So one would think that Notre Dame would place a great bit of emphasis on football and it helps when they have a leg up on most other football programs in the nation. Contrast Miami---where the school was only established in the 1920s and already was competing against several powerhouse Southern football programs at the time. Plus, let's say there are quite a bit of other things to do in Miami----which means the football team's support might be flaky unless the team is doing well. Let's also couple this with the fact that there is a large section of international students at Miami that don't even care about American football and compare it to Notre Dame's student population. The draw for football players at Notre Dame is the history, coaching staff, school support, etc. The draw for football players at Miami is the alum (extensive football alum support from former players), top notch coaches and facilities, and an excellent chance of turning pro/going to a bowl game. I'm not trashing Notre Dame or waving pom poms for Miami---just pointing out some ground rules---which NDBoston also chooses to ignore as well. Also, do you think Brady Quinn is going to be a TAD bit conflicted playing against Ohio State (another fine academic institution--- :barf:). Ohio State v. Notre Dame---I wish neither team could win.

The ironical (yes ironical) part of the whole thing is Nicholson won the team leadership award! I'm sure Coach Bowden will have an extensive search into this (yeah right). By the way, if you look at the recent track record (since Butch Davis took over at Miami) and compare the track record of Miami and let's say Notre Dame (Jesus U at South Bend) you'll see Miami compares very favorably with respect to disciplinary problems. If Clemens plays vs OU it's a totally different story. Ditto to Keller Vs Rutgers.

oh and lets not forget that a very weak Oregon D held OU to 17 points. I guess that speaks wonders about the Awesome Texas D which ONLY held a weaker squad to 5 less points.

As far as recruiting goes, Miami is ranked 14th (so far), according to Rivals.com. They have a good number of four-star prospects that have already committed. Many of which play defense. Unfortunately for Miami, Florida State is ranked 6th.

The SEC Conference is really cleaning up so far, with five of its schools ranked in the top 10!

I'm certainly no Miami fan....but I thought it was incredibly bush league by LSU running fake field goals and fake punts up 34-3 and 40-3

I mean....wtf is that sh*t?? Thats extremely unprofessional, and tells me the LSU team lacks class

if I was a Miami player....it would take all the power I had to no go headhunting for LSU players after that happened...but then again maybe that postgame brawl was the result of it

What a miserable display of football that was by Miami. They got beat by a 2nd string QB and LSU's 3rd & 4th string running backs. I'm not that surprised that they only scored 3 points because the offense has sucked all year and LSU's defense is very good, but I can't believe how easily LSU moved the ball on them.

Way to prepare the team Coker. You better recruit your ass off this year.
I'll repeat that Devin Hester is the most overrated player in college football this season. LSU outplayed the Hurricanes in every aspect of the game and this game should signal the end of Coker's time at Coral Gables. Right now, the recruiting class looks bad and we should have an "interesting" offensive line returning next season. Things haven't looked this bleak at UM since they lost to Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.

What a miserable display of football that was by Miami. They got beat by a 2nd string QB and LSU's 3rd & 4th string running backs. .Quick note on Flynn. I heard a pre-game radio interview with LSU coach miles as I was driving home from golf yesterday. He didn't seem concerned in the least about Flynn. Miles said (and did not sound like he was spinning) that Flynn had been in the program for three years, had been extreemly highly recruited out of HS, had made the competition for starter very close in the spring, and actually did several things better than Russel. His sincerity sold me. When I went home, I bet LSU.

I respect that Miles made a decision in the Spring, and (unlike Fullmer at KY and Trestle at OSU) stuck with one QB until injury forced a change, but I'm not sure that LSU wouldn't have been more productive on offense all year if Flynn had been the starter.

I can't say I disagree. Flynn looked great last night. He made some incredible passes and his ability to scramble made it even harder for Miami's defense to stop him. Frankly I wish Kyle Wright would show even a glimmer of the talent that Fynn displayed last night.

Maybe Coker does the honorable thing and steps down. Miami needs to hit the recruiting trail for several positions (OL, RB, WR). I only hope that as we draw closer to the NLOI day that Miami can get some better recruits.

Our offense will be a lot better once our actual talent are Jrs./Srs. The Tide was absolutely decimated by their NCAA sactions, and forced to start true freshmen the last two years to play big roles. As it stands, they have the most underclassmen playing offense in the entire SEC. Contrast that with the wonderful defense, the majority of which were seniors.

The 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl is history.

West Virginia with an upset over Georgia, 38-35.

It wasn't easy for the Mountaineers as they had to survive a Bulldog comeback. Great comeback by the Georgia Bulldogs, but they came up short.

That fake punt was a gutsy move by West Virginia, but it paid off with a first down.

Great job by both clubs. :clapping: :gulp: Props to West Virginia and the Big East conference, football wise.

I think this game is one of the best in the 2006 Bowl season so far.

My players of the game:

West Virginia - Steve Slanton 204 rushing yards 3 TDs
Georgia - D.J. Shockley 277 pass yards, 3 TDs

She looked and acted about the same that she did in high school. Back then, she was dating a linebacker on the high school team who went on to play at OSU. He's the mutual friend through whom she and Hawk met.

Interesting. Who was the LB that she dated in high school? Why didn't Brady go to OSU?

What a display by OSU today. AJ Hawk might be the best college linebacker EVER and i'll say it now....

Troy Smith will be a better pro than Vince Young Or Matt Leinart.

Anyway, I'm kinda glad that Tressel decided to pull that dumb QB platoon Vs Texas cuz I do not think that SC would handle OSU as well as they'll handle Texas.

Late to the party here, but aren't any ND fans questioning Wies' decision to go for it on 4th down in the first quarter? The score was 7-7 at the time, and I saw that as a major momentum shift. ND failing to get points on the board after the OSU turnover was, at least to me, the turning point in the game.

OTOH, it is important to remember that of ND's wins this year, only two came against teams with winning records (and one of those was a mediocre Michigan team).

Props to WVU (who I previously dissed here) on a great season and a great win tonight.

Anyway, I'm kinda glad that Tressel decided to pull that dumb QB platoon Vs Texas cuz I do not think that SC would handle OSU as well as they'll handle Texas.I really disagree on Smith. ND's defense (unable to muster a rush or cover a reciever) made him look better tonight than he really is.

OTOH, I do think that they might have beaten Texas if Trestle had played him for the whole game. (One must remember, however, that Smith was suspended for the first game of the year, and Zwick had looked good in his absence.)

EDIT: It is important to remember that anything I say about college players going to the NFL should be taken with a grain of salt. For whatever reason, I am a very poor judge of how a college players skills will translate to the next level. My track record in that area will not, however, stop me from having an opinion, and expressing it here. :D

Maybe not ever but he is arguably the top, Speilman was a pretty darn good linebacker too, and that's just the best Buckeye LB ever. Hawk is most certainly top 5 imo.

Ummm, no; I don't think so, Smith will be a good QB, no doubt, but not Leinhart territory, you can't really compare a true pocket passer to a converted pocket passer. Leinhart is still a lot better at reading defenses and throws a deeper more accurate ball. Though not as mobile Leinhart can still move around the pocket and take off if necessary.

I liked Weis' decision to go for it. I didn't like the 3 straight running plays before it though. Weis knew early that ND could not stop OSU and had to put TDs on the board, which was the strategy he used against USC.

On the other point about a mediocre Michigan team, OSU was lucky to beat them, yet OSU handled the Irish well. It's not easy to go into the Big House and beat even a "mediocre" Michigan team.

The one thing Leinart has is balls. It takes alot of guts to call an audiable on 4th and 9 in a hostile environment. The only thing that worries me is that he may not have the arm strength to be a good NFL QB. It's the same reason Vince Young isn't gonna be a QB in the NFL.

I have a question for all you college football fans. What is the significance of the 3 other BCS games? Is it really all just about money for the school? They're basically glorified scrimmage games.

I have a question for all you college football fans. What is the significance of the 3 other BCS games? Is it really all just about money for the school? They're basically glorified scrimmage games. It is hard for some fans (primarily those reared on pro sports) to understand, but college football is about alot more than just identifying a champion. More than anything, it is about beating your rivals (usually the other schools in your conference).

In that way it is really more like the Sox/Yankee rivalry than anything comprable in pro sports. In the hotbeds of college football, the midwest and south, no matter where you work or socialize, you are bound to associate with fans/alumni of schools other than your own. The schedule, bowl games included, is about bragging rights at the water cooler/local pub etc.

Ohio State and Notre Dame have played five times in the last hundred years despite being a short distance apart. The motivation and interest in this game was huge, and, in offices in Chicago, Indy, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinati, people have been discussing it for weeks and are buzzing about it today.

More than pro sports (Sox/Yanks excepted), college football generates passion among rivals (see other threads in this forum) that fuels energy at and interest in the games no matter what is at stake, title wise.

Until the recent advent of the BCS, in most years conference bowl affiliations prevented anything resembling a title matchup. National championships were purely decided by poles, and were justly dubbed, "mythical." In some ways they still are. For most schools, title shots come around a couple of times in a generation if they're lucky.

That does nothing to diminish interest in the sport, however, because, as hard as it is to put down in writing (at least I'm finding it hard :) ), college football is about alot more than winning national titles. For most schools, a two or three loss season, a conference title, beating your rival, and a bowl win is what you play for, and will make for happy fans/alumni. Title shots are just gravy.

Maybe not ever but he is arguably the top, Speilman was a pretty darn good linebacker too, and that's just the best Buckeye LB ever.

Randy Gradishire needs to be included in that discussion (top OSU linebackers).

I agree that FGs were not going to win the game, but momentum is important in college football. Getting stuffed at that juncture gave it to OSU, and ND didn't see it again until late in the game.

Interesting. Who was the LB that she dated in high school? Why didn't Brady go to OSU?

That would be Fred Pagac Jr, the son of OSU's defensive coordinator at the time. Freddy stayed on the team after John Cooper was fired with the rest of the coaching staff, which is where he met AJ Hawk. Somewhere along the line, AJ met Laura.

And Brady had wanted to go to Notre Dame since he was young; it wasn't much of a recruiting issue at all. Did you notice that he looked more comfortable when ND switched to a no-huddle offense in the 2nd half? That's what my high school team has been running since our new coach took over, right before Brady's junior year.

as an ND fan, I tip my cap to OSU. They were obviously the better team and deserved to win. If Tressel would have played Smith more against Texas...OSU wins that game. Their defense was very solid, and their overall team speed is fantastic. ND could have easily rolled over and gotten blown out....but they played tough and were in it in the end. If the defense could have stepped up and gotten a stop on one of those 3rd and long plays on the last OSU drive...it could have turned out differently.

This game showed ND lacks speed on defense...I'm sure Weis will recruit speed players for the next few years.

All in all, it was a successful first season for Weis at ND. NOBODY expected this team to be any good....we went 9-3, and made it to a BCS bowl.

Dissapointed we lost yesterday, but when you put things into perspective you realize how good of a season it was. When Weis gets more of his recruits in, ND will be a continual title contender...maybe as early as next season with a great recruiting class coming in and alot of core players returning.
