Yankees' Henson Resumes Hitting
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - New York Yankees third base prospect Drew Henson hit in the batting cage Tuesday for the first time since breaking his left hand last month.
Henson also took grounders and make throws from third base during a workout at the Yankees' player development center.
``No pain, no nothing,'' Henson said. ``I felt good.''
Henson said he might be able to start playing again in games within the next couple weeks. He was hit by a pitch while playing for Class-A Tampa in a Florida State League game April 14.
Henson signed a $17 million, six-year contract with the Yankees in March. As part of the deal, Henson agreed to give up football. The starting quarterback at the University of Michigan last season, Henson was considered a potential first-round draft pick in next year's NFL draft.
Great News...hope he can make his way up to AAA by the end of the summer....if not sooner.

That's nice, now lets get this overrated piece of crap out of our system and trade him to another team for someone who is actually good.

We're talking about a guy who hit well in the Eastern League at 20 years old, despite never concentrating on baseball. That's a legitimate prospect. And given his experience as a quarterback, a position which requires a lot of discipline, his control of the strike zone is sure to improve. And although he strikes out a lot, he walks more than Soriano ever did.
Besides, even if we did want to trade him, who besides the Yankees would take on a massive $17 million dollar contract for a guy who probably won't even pop up in the bigs until September 2002?

Not to mention he only wanted to play for the Yankees. The guy's a tremendous athlete, and with a year or two of full-time baseball instruction, could be a monster hitter.
P.S. - I think Cat Man goes to University of Michigan :)

*whispers* CatMan is a sophomore in high school who intends on going to Lyndon State College to major in meteorology when he graduates.

My sister goes to University of Michigan, and they say that after Henson got his contract the entire campus went nuts; they were so angry at him for dumping them!
But I was happy- my sister met him at a party and got his autograph, etc. for me.
Drew Henson is going to be a stud 3B.

He's not worth it... I think it's a mistake to give him this huge contract. I rejoiced when he was sent to Cincinatti's farm system. The one player I wanted back was Jackson Melian... sure, Melian need's plate patience (like Henson), but unlike Henson, Melian has incredible power and just awesome strength. Melian also is a better fielder than Henson is. I think Melian is gonna be a much bigger star than Henson will ever be... mark the Cat's words...

The keyword is "incredible"
More importantly, has he ever seen Melian play?
Truth of the matter is Henson is widely regarded as one of the best young power hitters in the minors, and has amazing athletic ability. As for his defense, I've read he's very nimble for a guy his size (6'5") around 3rd base and has great hands. And all this despite the fact he's never really had a full season of minor league instruction. Now that he can concentrate solely on baseball, he could blossom.

I saw each of them play in Tampa.
Henson was a true 6'4 to 6'5 and had the make up of a first baseman. He didn't look like a 3rd baseman to me (seemed stiff) but at the time he had only play a few minor league games.
Melian was always touted as a huge prospect. They said he was 6'2 or 6'3 but I seriously doubt he was over 6'0. Not that size is everything. He had a huge swing and was still very raw after a couple years of minor league ball.
I was more impressed with Juan Riveria even though Riveria received NO hype despite the two of them looking awful similiar in build and Riveria being much more productive.
Cat, I can't even imagine you making the statement that Melian had/has more power than Henson.
Henson hit like 25 bombs in each of his Jr and Sr years in HS. He's probably hit more minor league Hr's in 1/2 of the AB's as Melian.
Melian has power potential. Not necessarily power. Henson has hit some humongous bombs and is close to the bigs after less than 500 minor league ab's. Melian, hopefully for him, will make it. I think he will.
All I know is that when I saw them live I came away disappointed (somewhat) in Melian and extremely happy in Henson.
Im glad for Henson!
But Im Still A Bro Fan!!! Scotty is doing great this season needs no further threats from other players to ruin his records or concentration of Great At Bats!
:D

Junior and Senior years of HIGH SCHOOL!!! Anyone can hit that with an aluminum bat. Hell, I don't have great power and I hit 15 homeruns last year with an aluminum. Anyone can have power with an aluminum. That doesn't mean jack that he did that in high school...

It doesn't matter who has more power to me. I like both players, but it hurt so much to see Jackson go. I was pulling for him all the way. I went to Navigator (AA) games and got his autograph and everything. I was really looking foward to seeing him in Pinstripes some day......and to think, we lost him for Denny Neagle....uuughh...worst trade in Yankee history.........(actually that buhner deal was worse, but this hurt more....)

The Neagle trade wasn't bad. He went 7-7 with a 5 plus ERA, but what would someone else have done? We only won the division by two games, and anything less might have put us out of the playoffs. Considering that Ed Yarnall is in Japan and Drew Henson is back with us, Jackson Melian is the only player who's still hanging out there.

Cat, again you amaze me.
Anyone can do it? I think it was the record when he did it.
Sure it was High School. But what has Jackson Melian EVER done? Anything?
Now look, I think he's a decent prospect, but I'd take Henson ANY day over Melian.

Stat's for Jackson Melian at (AA)
Melian, Jackson .237 51 190 31 45 80 8 0 9 25 0 0 5 11 0 51 5 3 6 .421 .296 0 0 0 0 49 0 6
Not bad, 9 hr's and 25 rbi's along with 6 errors.
I still think he'll make it but they had to send him back to AA AGAIN. And he still has 51 k's in 190 ab's. Along with a .237 avg.
He's probably a year away from finding out if he can hit a major league breaking pitch.

And Melian is hitting squat. Can you say Ruben Rivera? He's the same player without the defense.
