Shinji Mori, a 31 year old righty starting pitcher was allowed to be posted by the Seibu Lions. As the link below states, the Lions previously turned down
Daisuke Matsuzaka's request to be posted, consider to be the best starting pitcher in Japan, and only 25. Credit to Dent6577, for the original information and link about Matsuzaka. My question now is, does anyone know much about Mori? Would the Yanks be interested in him for his talents, or even just to help pursuade the apparent stud Matsuzaka in the future?

From the linked article:

"The difference between the two cases reflects our management and marketing policies as well the difference in their ages," said club representative Akira Kuroiwa.

I speak a little Japanese so let me translate the above.

"Shinji is older and he sucks. Matsuzaka is young and makes us money. You can have Shinji. You can't have Matsuzaka."

I'm a little rusty, but that's close enough.

hahahahaha....that's the same thing I thought when I read the article....so perhaps I should have just asked....should we sign him in hopes of somehow improving our situation in getting Matsuzaka?

I imagine our leverage is a little hurt in getting Matsuzaka because of Hideki and the Yankees relationship with the Yomiuri Giants. In other words, without the said existing relationship, could we have made the Seibu Lions a similar profitable deal in an inter-marketing relationship, for the rights to Matsuzaka?

I almost feel that Seibu did this because they know no team will bid on Mori and they can go back to Matsuzaka and say "see, teams wouldn't bid for you either."

Well...it appears at least one AL East team has an interest in him...according BostonDirtDogs...
"Here is yet another Japanese bullpen possibility for the Red Sox.

According to Nov. 28 issue of the Sports Nippon newspaper, anonymous Red Sox club personnel told a reporter that they are interested in pitcher Shinji Mori of Seibu Lions (original story in Japanese.)"

This from the same team that rescued Kevin Millar and Gabe Kapler from Japan. I wouldn't sweat it. BTW, do you think we can have Akira Kuroiwa working in our front office. He can be a Miyagi-like mentor (RIP) to Brian-San.

Mori's ERA the last few seasons is a little higher than I'd like to have in a setup man.

Looking at his stats, he either has a really good season or an average one (4ish ERA).

Pass. He's been posted for a reason ... and that is the Lions want to get rid of him for some good moolah.
