Is he a GOOD pitcher in the Dominican Winter League?
Funny sort of minor league stats. whip constantly well under 1.00, gives up very few hits, but his era his usually well up there above 5.00.

Set up for MO????
" Veras was on the Texas Rangers' roster last year before being reassigned to the team's minor league camp."
He couldn't make the Rangers' pitching roster and he's supposed to set up for Mo? What's the writer of this article smokin?

wtf??
Uggy Urbina has a better chance of "filling Gordon's role" ...and from the looks of things, Uggy isn't really going anywhere anytime soon.

He could be one of those guys who starts off with great stuff but tires in later innings. I see he was mostly used as a starter in the minors... Could be a good bullpen candidate.. and he's young.
Some info on him:
http://www.oklahomaredhawks.com/roster/?players=1&player_181=1
Weight: 237 pounds
Height: 6' 5"
Born: October 20, 1980
Throws: Righty
In 2004, with AAA Durham, "went 4-1 with a 3.16 ERA as a reliever for Durham, while going 2-4, 7.04 as a starter...twice went four straight outings without allowing a run, spanning 6.1 innings July 25-Aug. 4 and 8.2 IP Aug. 11-27."
4-1 with a 3.16 ERA in relief
2-4 with a 7.04 ERA as a starter
Sounds like a big strong kid who perhaps has some good short inning stuff.

that Urbina picture reminds me of that movie Major League, when Wild Thing is like "I'm not sure if I can make it by then" when asked if he could report to spring training on march 1st.

Jayson Stark has his "The Yankees screwed up by trading Jose Veras" article already written and waiting for when the Yankees eventually deal this guy. He's just waiting to find out which hand Veras doesn't throw with.

Man, he must really run out of gas.
(Not comparing).. but Mo struggled as a starter (5.51 ERA in 1995) but was effective in relief in his next season (2.09 ERA). Who knows, hopefully a scout saw something in Veras.... Keeping my fingers and toes crossed here.

agreed.
but whoever wrote the article essentially saying the Yankees got their setup man, is either a prophet or seriously misinformed.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Relief pitcher Jose Veras said he has signed a one-year contract with the New York Yankees.
The Dominican right-hander refused to divulge the value of the deal, but said Friday he's excited to join the bullpen with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. "I feel proud that the Yankees have signed me to help set the table for Mariano Rivera. That's something very important to me," Veras told the Associated Press.
Anyone else think it's kind of weird that this "signing" is only being reported by.....Jose Veras????!?? :thatsodd:

Looks like the Yankees are trying to catch Aaron Small in a bottle.
Maybe they should go check Dae-Sung Koo's performance before they decide to invest in a guy who has proven absolutely nothing at the Major League level.
When a guy comes over with no experience, he has to have phenominal numbers to suggest that he has a shot here. This guy's numbers are average at best.
Take a flier on a guy? Sure.
Count on him to be a part of the bullpen? Hell no.

Agree, and read Veras quote nonverbatim"I am proud to be signed to be able to set up before Mariano Riveria". What in hades is he smokin? He can't remain on the Rangers roster and he believes he could be in our pen.

I'm not saying this guy will ever be any good, but what would you have thought last year if the Yanks had been the White Sox and claimed Bobby Jenks? Everyone would have said throws smoke but can't find the plate and the Angels didn't want him.

"Set the table" for Mariano Rivera probably means that he is thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of the same pen as Mo. I think it was him giving respect to someone who he admires more than anything else. The writer may be an idiot, but I really doubt that Veras thinks he is taking over for Gordon. I am happy to see a young guy with potential excited to get his shot with the big club. There's nothing wrong with that at all.
I have never seen him pitch, but his stats as a RP indicate that he can have success. I see no reason why this is a bad signing (I'm guessing they didn't offer him 5 years, $100M). Let him throw some pitches in ST, work in the minors or take over mop-up duty in the pen to gain some confidence and recognition from Torre.
I hope, with the new coaches on the team, Joe will be influenced more to give younger guys their shot instead of going with "veteran experience" (cough, <COUGH>Embree and Leiter, cough cough) <COUGH, cough>every time.
I am excited... this is going to be the first year in a while (1996?) where we are consciously getting a balance of up-and-coming players and playoff-savvy veterans. It will be a breath of fresh air for many Yankee fans.

T I couldn't agree more!! I have no Idea when people bash a move like this.I think people need to realize you can't have a pen of All Stars.I my self was shocked when Flash turned down the chance to close for the sake of trying to win it all.

Where does it say that in the article? All it says is that he is excited at the prospect of being able to "help set the table for Mariano Rivera."
Nowhere is it implied that he is slated to be the replacement for anyone, no less Tom Gordon.
This is in all likelihood nothing more than a minor league deal for a guy who will compete for a slot in the bullpen.
It amazes me how much attention such an inconsequential signing is getting here.

I'm sorry, it didn't say that in the article. However it says it on the sportsline page -- "Yankees sign Veras to fill Gordon's role". As others have said, it seems the writer is the one puffing the magic dragon, not Veras. I should have clarified:

Damn it, a little confidence never hurt anyone. Don't wish you wish Sean Henn thought like that?
Maybe we can invite Rickey Henderson to ST as a special instructor to take Henn under his wing. And if not him then we can see if Leon from the Budweiser ads is available :)
Agree, and read Veras quote nonverbatim"I am proud to be signed to be able to set up before Mariano Riveria". What in hades is he smokin? He can't remain on the Rangers roster and he believes he could be in our pen.
What a jacka**!!!
Well, what would you expect him to say or want him to say?
I would much rather have him be self-confident and ready to take a run at setting up for Mo than to say "what the heck did they sign me for I can't set up for Mo." Give the guy a break!

I wonder if this is how it went down...
Cashman... "So, we should take a flier on this guy..."
Scouts..."Sure..just tell him he'll set up for Mo and he'll be on board."

Imagine how Veras would be getting ripped if he had said something like "I only signed with the Yankees for the money! I don't know how I fleeced them into signing me since I suck and can't pitch on the major league level!" if he's getting ripped for maybe showing a little confidence and thinking that he can help out in the bullpen.
This signing doesn't seem to be much of a big deal to me. Many other relievers would probably say something similar in terms of how they would feel honored to potentially be in the bullpen with Mariano. Maybe he'll be great, maybe he won't be but I'd rather see the Yankees add a few guys who might be able to help in the 'pen rather than doing nothing.

I like this completely "off the radar" signing if only because it shows the Yanks frontoffice has more targets in its sights than the NY media would have us believe.
I don't like this completely "off the radar" signing because it shows how lackluster the middle relief market really is.
Anyway, welcome aboard, Mr. Veras, whoever you are. We have one basic rule around here: Be good or be gone, or be good enough to get Kevin Brown's deal before you're gone.

I like this signing too. Maybe the guy will amount to nothing and maybe it is a sign of a lackluster middle relief market but then it might also be an indication that the Yankees have been doing some really careful scouting and think they have found someone that others have overlooked.
Not too many people were very high on Sturze when they signed him either but he has paid his keep!
i think it's a good idea that it is strength in numbers and you never know, maybe he'll be something at least kind of solid. Even if it's 6th or 7th inning of kind of close games where our starter is done
besides...anyone has to be better than Heredia '04 or F-rod '05

I for one am not impressed, we have much more work to do this offseason. I do not like the way the pen is shaping up right now w/ Sturtze and Veras setting up Mo. We had better resign Gordon in a flash, or else its Mike Stanton part 3 in the Bronx.

Why do people keep talking about Veras setting up Mo? He's a minor league signing like a million others.

well so far he is our big bullpen addition, he will be the talk of the town until we bring in another future Quantrill.

No, he doesn't. He never said that, and I'm not sure how one could possibly interpret his quote as such.

Funny sort of minor league stats. whip constantly well under 1.00, gives up very few hits, but his era his usually well up there above 5.00.
I never heard of him, but those type of numbers (especially his strikeout-innings pitched) indicate a young pitcher with real good stuff and real inconsistent location. He's got potential.

If we can't get all the dominant relievers on the free agent market, we need to do more signings like this. Sign a bunch on non-tendereds for chump change and let them duke it out in spring training. Should find one or two diamonds in the rough if we're lucky.

Maybe he will be useful us down the down. His numbers don't look that bad from Durham at all. Good signing Cash.

What's confusing? There are links in this thread saying he signed, including confirmation from the yanks. He won't see the Bronx, but he's yankee property.

well not really...about when he was signed his biggest (non) competition was sturtze and proctor...now it's pretty full out there
he'll enjoy AAA or have to for at least a while

He said "help set the table for..."
That in no way implies that he will be THE set-up man for Mo, it means he looks forward to being part of the mix of players that will set the table for Mo.
Go easy on the guy -- he is excited to be in the Yankees system -- there is nothing wrong about that, nor is he saying anything "delusional".

Set up for MO????
" Veras was on the Texas Rangers' roster last year before being reassigned to the team's minor league camp."
He couldn't make the Rangers' pitching roster and he's supposed to set up for Mo? What's the writer of this article smokin?"... to help set the table for Mariano Rivera..." <> being Mo's setup man.
not a bad strikeout...ok, gave up a double, but I guess he was right...he did set up for Mo...in the ALDS no less. Thanks for what you gave us Veras.
Did we sign him all the way back in 05? I thought it was only last year.
