With Scott Eyre signing with the Cubbies, and B.J. Ryan looking for a closer's role, should the Yanks consider signing a starter like A.J. Burnett or another starter and place Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small as relievers? Do we have any minor leaguers w/ potential to help in the bullpen?

I have earlier concerns if B.J. is uninterested in becoming a Yankee.
Does anyone have an alternative ideas, or any young relievers that the Yankees could trade for? Also, who is replaceable that could be used as a tradeable commodity on our team?

Signing AJ Burnett does nothing to address this team's principal need - middle relief and a replacement for Gordon.

For the moment, I am not putting much faith in what is being said about BJ Ryan's "desire" or lack thereof to play in NY. Time will tell.

If true Mr. Gordon's position vis a vis the NYY just improved.

Personally I'm not crazy about throwing a big bucks at Ryan anyway. There's a statement in the article about him not wanting to deal with the pressure in NYC.

If he doesn't like pressure in NYC then why did he take a tour of Shea(rhetorical)?

More specifically the Newsday article said he didn't want to deal with the stress of pitching for the Yankees.

I would like to see Wang eventually make his way into a setup role. While not a big strikeout guy, he throws some heat and pounds the strike zone, two qualities you look for in a good reliever. With his injury and stamina issues, a move to the bullpen might be good for Wang. I could even see him eventually taking over for Mo at some point.

I thought BJ was a friend of Guidry's and that move was designed to help bring BJ here.

starting pitchers are more valuable than relief pitchers. to take an effective starter, who will pitch over 200 innings, and cut their innigns down to about 75 is a waste of 125 effective innings. there's a reason that mariano is a reliever...he bombed as a starter.

Yeah, so much for that theory :dunno:

If Ryan is truly not interested in coming to the Yankees as a set up man, then I may have to rethink my stance on trading Sheffield. I was against it since Sheff has been our best hitter the last two seasons, however we desperately need to upgrade CF and the bullpen. A Sheffield trade could potentially yield us a centerfielder and a couple of bullpen arms. Of course this would all be contingent on signing Giles to replace Sheff's offense. That still leaves a hole at the DH spot, but at least CF and the bullpen would be addressed and we wouldn't significantly weaken our offense.

i'm glad we didnt sign eyre. Alou had ridden him hard and similar relievers on the giants have broken down (Brower especially after a good year)

I'm also glad the Yankees didn't sign him. I have a theory that any pitcher who says that he prefers pitching in the NL is really saying he's scared of pitching in the AL. Let him bomb for the Cubs, which is likely.

Different pressure to pitch for the Yankees than to pitch for the Mets. Also, he may very well want to close, not be a setup man that has to take over for Mariano Rivera in a couple years (and, to be fair, I don't know if I blame a guy for not wanting to take over for Mo. It's never good to take over for a legend). Either way, I think that job will now come from within in J. Brent Cox.

As for next year, sign Farnsworth and Howry and move on.
