View Full Version : Yankees asked about Washburn (Bergen Record)
Ghost of Dan Pasqua

"In conversations between agent Scott Boras and the Yankees about Bernie Williams and Johnny Damon, another Boras free agent came up in discussions: Jarrod Washburn.
While the Yankees aren't actively pursuing starting pitching, Washburn could be of interest to them - especially if they can move Jaret Wright or Carl Pavano in a trade for an outfielder.
The left-handed Washburn, 31, went 8-8 in 29 games last year for the Angels, with a 3.20 ERA, the AL's fourth-lowest mark. Washburn spent time on the disabled list in August with a strained forearm, and skipped his Game 4 AL Division Series start against the Yankees due to a throat infection."

Another name to keep an eye on. Clearly the Yankees have some starting pitching to trade if they continue to loose out on bullpen help (Eyre gone, BJ not wanting to come, Gordon asking for too much), maybe they are forced to pull the trigger on a Pavano deal.

He's left handed and put up a good ERA last year. If the price is right and Pavano or Wright is gone then I dont see why not of course starting pitching isnt the main concern so we'll just have to see.

When we get rid of Pavano, Washburn would be a good signing.

why get rid of pavano? cuz of some unname sources who said stupid things?

if we get washburn that means that chacon could be a possibility for the pen for next year before the yanks lock him up if they decide to do so.

We'll see how right or wrong they are. If it wasn't true, why doesn't Pavano just come out and say he wants to be here? These rumors have been going on for months now and Pavano hasn't said a word about them. Usually when you hear this much about a guy not wanting to be here and the guy doesn't say a word about it, it turns out to be true. Cashman will find out the truth (if he hasn't already. And if he has, it is best for him to not say anything to lower Pavano's trade value) and do the correct thing.

I don't want him. Washburn hasn't thrown over 200 innings the last 2 years, doesn't strike out many guys, didn't really improve his periphreals from 2004 but his ERA lowered about 1 1/2 runs, seems to give up a flukey low number of HRs for the amount of FB he gives up, and is coming from a pretty good pitcher's park.

i dont want to continue trading pitchers and paying for their salaries.
anyway if washburn is signed does that mean that chacon goes to the pen?
a pen with mo, chacon, sturtze, wright, and add 2 more pieces.

Washburn would only be signed if we traded a starter. If Pavano doesn't want to be here, we should get rid of him whether we have to bight the bullet on his salary or not.

isnt wright easier to move than pavano considering his salary?

I don't think so. Wright has $7 million this year and a $4 million buyout - $11 million for one year pretty much. He didn't pitch well at all for us and is probably thought of as a product of Mazzone that gets hurt all the time. A lot of teams were interested in Pavano and may think he just needs a change of scenery. We would have to pay some of his salary ($3 million a year maybe?) but I think he still has some value.

His career K/9 of 5.46 is disturbing, especially since it seems to have a declining trend in recent years.

Deal him back to Mazzone in Baltimore.

And unlike Wang he's not an extreme GB pitcher; in fact, he seems to be more of an extreme FB pitcher.

It's difficult to tell what's a hitters park and pitcher's park, aside from the obvious. (Fenway for hitters, Comerica for pitchers, etc.) In 2002 and 05, Angel Stadium was in the top 10 for pitchers, but in 01 03 and 04, it was in the top 10 for hitters (Park Factors (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor?season=2001)). I think Washburn would be a good fit for the Yanks if they're able to trade Pavano.

Otherwise, meh.

I like Washburn, but I have to agree that he is in decline. His peripherials didn't support his low ERA in 2005. It's entirely possible he could have a rebound season, but he'll probably command at least a 3 year deal at a good price ($7M per?) and the chances of that he returns value over three years at that price is extremely unlikely. To boot, it would be a terrible misallocation of financial resources, when our needs in CF, the bench & the BP are far more obvious.
He should go to San Diego where all those FBs will be caught far short of the fence. Pass on Jarrod.

I'm an advocate of keeping Pavano here, but not if he doesn't want to be here. I would like a Washburn signing, maybe Guidry could work with him to make him more consistent. However, if we don't get Pavano or Wright off the team, there is no point in signing Washburn.

So long as Washburn can stay reasonably healthy, he is a good No. 3 or No. 4. Obviously, deal only makes sense if we move Pavano or Wright, or (*gulp*) Chacon. I don't think the Yankees want to move Chacon, and I certainly don't want to, but I think Small has a better chance of staying. Chacon, Wright, Pavano, Washburn are all starting pitchers. None of them would go to the BP willingly for the entire season. At least Small would accept the swingman role.

ESPN's park factors aren't correct, unfotunately.
I have park factors for each team based on the last 4 years...but since I've been focusing mostly on hitters I don't have run park factors yet, but I do have pretty much everything else.

What is this nonsense? Pavano and Wright both ate it last year. They're in no position to bitch about their role. If the team decides to put Wright in the bullpen, and he complains, he'll be set on fire in the press.

it probably went something like this:
Cashman: By the way, how's Washburn doing?
Boras: Fine.
Cashman: Cool. Take it easy.
And now it's breaking news!
Pass. He's hurt way too often.

Because if he did so, would it be because he wanted to be here or would it be damage control to make up for his friend's hurting his chance's of being traded (if this is even a story to begin with).
