This guy is FRAGILE, man. He spends an awful lot of time on the DL. Before you make this man the Savior at 1st Base, please remember Pat Kelly.

Hopefully he gets stronger as time goes on! The Yanks Organization is on top of things. IT isn't time for him to come up yet.

I understand Gene Monahan is taking an advanced crash course in anatomy in case Nick Jonhson ever makes it to Yankee Stadium.

There's a big difference between "savior" and "good hitter." A lot of people on this forum think that if you put Nick Johnson in the lineup, he would hit well. When he can. That's not a "savior," it's a piece. A cog.

If Nick Johnson wasn't injury prone, I would say things like "This guy is going to be the first baseman for the next twelve years, and he's going to win MVPs." But he is injury prone, nobody can deny that, so I'll just be happy with what we can get. And if he comes back next week with his thumb fine and dandy, he should be considered a potential offensive threat for the major league team. That's "something we can get."

When/If Nick Johnson is the starting first baseman, the Yankees should carry a fourth outfielder who can also play first base. That way they would have a decent hitter to plug in at first base whenever it's needed (and, unfortunately, it would be needed from time to time).

Speaking of injury prone first baseman, Mark McGwire was activated from the DL today. :)

Glad to hear about McGuire playing again.I hate to see a player sit that long.It takes awhile to get going.
He seems like a really nice guy.

With all the advancements in medical science, injuries aren't as big a factor as they used to be. Nick Johnson does get injured (maybe because he gets hit by so many pitches), but it seems like most of his injuries come from bad luck (his jaw was broken when a bat hit him a couple years ago). I mean, Bernie always misses a few weeks with injuries every year, but I don't see posts calling him fragile or injury prone.

ElDuque110, there's a huge difference between the injuries Bernie has sustained and the fact Nick was out for an entire season with what amounted to an unidentifiable injury. I think what we saw last year is cause for reasonable concern. And again, we saw more injuries in Spring Training this year.

I doubt highly that Nick will be brought up next year as a starter in any position or as a DH. Hopefully he will get stronger over time, but at this time the majors seem to still be somewhat off in the distance for Nick. So much for the thought some had of bringing him up at the beginning of last season.

Well, this is in the minor league forum now, where threads go to die...

I don't think Nick Johnson is a long way from the majors at all. Why should a player's ability to stay injury-free have anything to do with their ability to play in the major leagues? Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire are often pointed too as guys who could've been something more. Micky Mantle, too. But the most important thing to know about Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire and Mickey Mantle is that despite all of their shoulda coulda wouldas, they've still combined for more than 1,500 home runs.

Still, Johnson's had more than bad luck, Duke. He missed a whole season because he didn't swing a bat the right way. Now he has a minor muscle tear in his thumb. That's not bad luck, that's problematic hands. But it doesn't mean he can't help the team!

Now, I'm not saying that Nick Johnson is Mark McGwire or even Jose Canseco, but if he can play well in the American League - he's got the confidence and the numbers, so there's nothing to suggest that he can't - he should play and help the team as much as he can.

The cool thing about Johnson is potential. Maybe he won't ever amount to anything. Or maybe he'll be an average everyday kinda guy. Or a really good one. Or injury plagued for the duration. But right now his stats tantalize us with possibilities. And thats cool enough for now. At least with me it is. :)

Nick Johnson is a great prospect for the Yankees...and in all likelihood he will be a great 1st baseman for the NY Yankees in the not to distant future, or he will be used to get something else that the Yankees really need....his fragility is a concern though, and I hope it's just a bunch of freak things that he's getting out of the way now, and who knows -- maybe the rest of his career, he won't be injury prone...I think it's something that should be a minor concern, but not something that will overshadow the potential he has...I just hope he gets well quickly so that he can continue to gain the experience he needs in Triple A, so he can be a contributor at the major league level some day...

get well soon Nick!! :)

It was on a pitch from Denny Neagle in spring training that Nick Johnson injured his wrist, if memory serves me correctly.

Sigh.. A guy goes on the DL 2 times and now he's injury prone... Hell IVAN rodriguez has been on the dl the last 2 years at some point.Does that mean he's injury prone? Alex rodriguez has been on the DL 2x or 3x in the last 3 years... So he's injury prone? LAY OFF NICK . He's gonna be a star no matter how much you guys want to suck on tino's........

I don't see a single mention about Tino in the segment of text that you quoted? Nobody here doesn't like Nick Johnson. Nobody here doesn't want to see Nick Johnson succeed.

Word up, Jim. Not to mention that I've been one of NJ's biggest supporters on this forum - hell, the post advocated calling him up. I'm just kinda facing for reality and preparing for the worst, that's all.
