View Full Version : My First "69"!

...in golf, that is. :D I know this should be in the "Other Sports" Forum, but I wanted to brag to as many people as possible. Sorry, but this is a major accomplishment for me. If a mod wants to move it - that's fine.
I have shot even par (72) once, one over once, and several 74s, but Friday I shot 69 on a par 72 course! Just got back from my annual Fall golf trip with my golfing buddies and had to boast to my fellow golf enthusiast on NYYF forum. I admit that the course was a little shortish (5,985 yards), but it was still a thrill. Three bogies and SIX birdies... I was putting lights out. Any way... just thought I'd tell ya.
A blow-by-blow description:
Front nine (par 36): Par, Par, Birdie, Par, Birdie, Par, Par, Par, Bogie (35)
Back nine (par 36): Bogie, Par, Birdie, Par, Par, Bogie, Birdie, Birdie, Birdie (34)

Nicely done! Putting is key, I play for my highschool team and some of my teamates can kill the ball but their putting is terrible. I don't hit it far but I am much more consistent than them. Great job, that is an awesome score!

So the key to your 69 is your "short game," making the most of your strokes and finishing better on the back than on the front....

Great job, that is an awesome score! Thanks. I hit it pretty long and have a steady (but not great) short game. I don't hit a lot of greens but I'm usually real close and chip quite well (lots of practice). My putting is normally above average but last Friday it was incredible... less than 30 putts, for sure.

You must be quite a golfer, Jim. I couldn't shoot a 69 on a par 3 course if I tried 1,000 times. You must have been nervous on that last hole, eh? :)

I was playing on a 3-man team and we had a couple of bets (Best Ball being one of them) with two other teams. My main concern was how the team was doing and I really wasn't paying close attention to my individual score. I knew I was playing well... but not that well.

You know I'm kidding (well, not about getting to 69 on the 13th hole...but). That is quite an accomplishment.
I'd love to be able to get out on the course 3 times a week. I'd probably be able to get to the mid 80's if I could. Being the hacker I am now & getting out once in a while... I'm not doing any improving.

Well qualifying you have to first have districts and top 3 teams out of 11 go to regionals and than at regionals top 2 out of about 10 go to states I hope that makes sense and for scores you it's your teams best 4 scores out of 5players on 18. For states we get to play 36 holes so that should be pretty cool. Also thanks for the congrats.

Perfectly clear! ;) My daughter was pretty crushed because at Sectionals 4 teams and 4 individuals advance to Districts. She shot a 81, which was the third lowest score but her team did crap. The problem was that 3 other girls had 81's so they had a 3 girl playoff for the 2 remaining individual spots. First hole she and another girl got par but the third birdied it (she's in). Second playoff hole she bogeyed and the other girl parred. It would've been nice to see her advance to Districts and hopefully States since it's her senior year.

That is unfortunate that other girls had 81's but thats still a great score for girls. Also when your team does nothing it's hard, like we had 4 girls on our teams all shoot in the 80's. I had 86 but like i safed myself on the back with a 40. I am planning on playing golf in college and i just started playing the end of 10th grade year so I still have potential. She's not overly passionate about it (she'd rather play softball in college) but yes. She is currently meeting with various coaches and had interest from several big Division I programs but she's just not THAT good. It takes REALLY good scores to play Div I golf and there really aren't as many scholarships any more as people tend to think. My guess is that she'll end up at a smaller Div I program like Dayton or Ohio University or a VERY good Division III program like DePauw (ranked #4 in the nation) or Otterbein (ranked #13). The nice thing for her is that if she does go the D III route, the national tourney qualifications change next year so she'd have a very good chance of going to it with either DePauw or Otterbein.

Flagler is like really small and they only accept like 1 out of 5 applicants but it is a really pretty campus right on the beach, I havent heard one bad thing about it so far, so fingers crossed. Checked out Flagler quickly on-line. Looks VERY nice. Neat looking campus. Not sure what Allison's average is because she goes to a different school but probably a stroke or so lower than my daughter's so I'm guessing probably around a 79-something for tourneys. I've yet to break 80 much less 70 so I can't even imagine what THAT would feel like. And so what if the course was shorter, you still have to manage it right to get the score.

You were in the zone. If you ever make it up to Atlanta and want to give me a quick putting lesson. Anytime friend, anytime. Does not matter the length of the course, you still had to hit fairways and greens and drop putts to make birdies.

I'm euphoric if I get a birdie on a hole much less <par for 18. I think I'd pass out. Shoot, a couple weeks ago my daughter shot 74 (par = 72) in a tourney and she shot a double bogey on the last hole. I think I was more excited than her!!!

I have always had trouble finishing too and except fo my last HS tourney, I birdied 3 of the last 4 including 18. But that is what makes what Palmer did so special. In my old group from my hometown, if you made three birdies in a row, it was called a "Tri-fecta" and worth an extra dot!

eh not great, our team was like 13th out of 16th. I didn't play to good I would play solid and than have like 2 bad holes which would kill me. I played with a girl though that was really good like she shot even par and she said her last tournament she had a 67. I need more experience playing 18 holes though.

Sorry to hear that. If you plan to play in college, you need to play 18+ and play whatever tees give you about 6200 - 6400 yards to get used to the distance.

Yea now I have been teeing off from farther back tee's and I am starting to do some tournaments. Also most of the courses that Flager plays at are about 5700-6000. 6400 would kill me, I do not hit it far well my drive I do now. So yea I finally got new clubs and a new driver because I didnt even hit driver for the tournament so I lost yardage there. I have been hitting my new driver well so we'll see I have a tournament dec. 19th.

5700-6000 is about right. A tad on the low side. I suggested the longer distance to get used to the other clubs as well. What driver did you get? My daughter had the Great Big Bertha II but her pro took it from her and gave her a different Callaway (forget which one). It's got a 13 degree loft which I guess they say should help but in her case, she's actually lost about 2o+ yards off the tee. Try to do AJGA or Plantations tourneys. Have you applied to Flagler yet? Signed NLI?

You are right about yardage it does make you better to play farther, tomorrow I am going to play from like 6300 yards just to see. The one now is about 5900 which was low for for the tournaments I am doing. I am doing these greater tampa bay ones. For AJGA do you have to a certain player like shoot in the 70's? Also I applied to Flagler and I will know mid-december, keep you fingers crossed :). Also I got a cobra driver my dad has one and I hit it dead straight so he got me one with a bigger face but I believe it is 10 degree, when I hit it good it goes pretty high. Also your daughter might be losing roll on hers because she hits it higher. My dad was saying all the pros want height now anyways. I didnt know if for that AJGA was for like certain handicapps.

Yep, she hits it high to begin with so the 13 deg loft makes it look like a rocket launch. She's got an official visit Sunday so it'll be interesting to see what he says about her swing.
AJGA has qualifiers I believe. I know the college coaches we've dealt with are usually more interested to hear scores from the major tourneys versus local and HS scores.

AJGA has qualifiers I believe. I know the college coaches we've dealt with are usually more interested to hear scores from the major tourneys versus local and HS scores.
Yeah well I will try these ones out and see I know some good girls do it but AJGA is a step above. We are going back to RI for the summer so I will have to see what I can do there, hopefully there is something.

Holy Crap!!! I almost did it again... this time on my home course. Shot a "70" today - 36/34. Two bogies, twelve pars, four birdies. What a great way to end 2005!!!!!

I got into Flagler! I also started doing some junior tournaments here in tampa and came in third......yardage wise they are about 6000 so I am hoping these tournments will be good practice. The next one is monday, they try to have about 2 tournaments a month. Got new clubs for christmas so I am killng the driver. Going good right now. :)

I can't wait until I can play golf five days a week!
Congrats on your 70. Two under and a three under in the same year, actually about 3 months apart is awesome.

I'm trying to ignore Palms. He's pissing me off. Not only is he getting to golf while it's miserable, cold and rainy here....but he's actually doing quite well.

We have had some unusual weather here in Georgia the past three weeks. Extreme temps going for the teens to the 70's.
...in golf, that is.
Congrats!

I am not sure but I have been looking at their scores and it wouldn't be a problem but the coach made it seem like I was on the team for sure. She was kind of like "can't wait to see you next year" so I took that as a yes haha
