This is a very ambitious effort on my part. My friend is doing this on another msg board and I hope it'll take flight here.

Last month Blender had the "Top 500 songs since you were born", or 1980. As with all lists, it was way off. This simple fact is the reason that we all love such lists. I think that this could be a great way to pass the off-season. I'll post (or try to remember to post) ten songs a day. Then we can all discuss. Talk about your favorite and least favorite in the group, do whatever you want.

This'll be a big undertaking, but will be worth it in the end.

500 - Coldplay "Yellow"
499 - Aerosmith "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"
498 - Jackson Browne "Somebody's Baby"
497 - The Darkness "I Believe in a Thing Called Love"
496 - Smashing Pumpkins "1979"
495 - No Doubt "Don't Speak"
494 - Replacements "I'll Be You"
493 - Underworld " Born Slippy"
492 - Ini Kamoze "Here Comes the Hotstepper"
491 - Pulp "Common People"

My favorite: "Don't Speak"
Back in high school I had such a crush on Gwen Stefani when "Just a Girl" came out. Then this song put them over the top as not just pop/ska, but a real band. Sadly, they've gone downhill since, but what a good song that was.

Least favorite: "I Believe in a Thing Called Love"
:barf: Whiny, over-the-top, brit-pop went away in the 80s for a reason.

HM: Here comes the Hotstepper - I totally forgot this song existed until reading this list.

Well...I was born looooooong before 1980, but here goes anyway...

First of all, "Born Slippy" is the song that runs over the closing scenes of the fine movie Trainspotting. It was a hugely influential dance song. And Underworld rules.

And...
- "I'll Be You" is fine this far down, but I hope to see a few Replacements songs further up the list.
- The only Coldplay song I can even stomach is the dance remix of "Clocks". I don't get their appeal at all.
- "Common People" deserves a much higher ranking.
- Gawd, I LOVE "1979". Should probably be ranked higher too.
- No Doubt shouldn't be on a top-anything list. They just glom onto the musical trend du jour and spit out watered-down, radio-friendly versions thereof. Yawn.

Every song on that list I either haven't heard of or can't stand.

I was born in '84. The list of songs that have been created since then that I actually like wouldn't even fill a top 100.

I love the William Shatner version of "Common People"Agreed totally on both.

U2 mixes in some upbeat tunes every now & then, and even their more dirge-y tracks have their merit. Meanwhile, the lead singer of Coldplay is filthy rich & married to Gwyneth Paltrow. His moping days are long behind him.

And Shatner is indeed the man.

OK, duh...I do know that song, so I'm removing it from least favorite, and replacing it with "Somebody's Baby" - at least "Don't Want To Miss A Thing" is a nice wedding song, "Somebody's Baby" is the absolute worst song Jackson Browne ever did!

So I looked through the entire thing, and there are 19 songs that I think are at least ok. Over half of those are Nirvana and mid-'90s rap. "Rock the Casbah" is probably my favorite on the list.

My favorite song in the last decade was probably "Hanging by a Moment" by Lifehouse. I didn't see it on there. I also didn't see anything off Californication. Too much really really crappy late '90s pop and sorry excuses for rock.

Finally we are getting into some good songs. I had a hard time picking a favorite from this set. Do I go with one of the top 3 Live songs or top 3 Wu Tang ones? Early, pre-MTV Eminem, or super side project Temple of the Dog? What am I in the mood for?

Favorite: I Alone - I'd have this higher then 475. Probably in the 300s somewhere.

Love "I Alone". That's one of my favorite Live songs. Also like "Santa Monica", but although it's good, it's not one of the absolute best by Everclear. Maybe I'll like the list, because I loved a lot of mid-90's rock (though it saddens me that apparently nothing from Californication is one it -- I loved that RHCP album).

I still don't know about 1/3 of these songs -- although from an earlier list "Here Comes the Hotstepper" brings back memories of 7th grade... I used to like that song, and never understood that it sampled "Land of 1000 Dances". But I was 12 at the time. And musically ignorant. And still am.

I am seriously too young for this list.
I'm seriously too old, I guess.

I don't know most of these songs.

Or maybe I'm not too old, but I was too busy being a Mom, with Barney songs as the soundtrack of the early 90s for me:lol:

When C.R.E.A.M. dropped, it was part of the beginning of a whole new sound in hip-hop, and as an aside it introduced a major term into the lexicon of today's youth.

I love that song.

EPMD is also timeless.

I Alone, although overplayed and kind of creepy, is sung with such conviction and angst. Another song that I love to hear whenever it plays these days.

Busta Rhymes should never even sniff this list. His contributions are to the aesthetic side of things, not the musical (although many of his beats were new and refreshing).

My favorite: "Don't Speak"
Back in high school I had such a crush on Gwen Stefani when "Just a Girl" came out. Then this song put them over the top as not just pop/ska, but a real band. Sadly, they've gone downhill since, but what a good song that was.

"Baby Got Back" isn't a good song, but it's absolutely hilarious and I used to love it. Great song for when you're out partying with friends and a little bit (or a lot) drunk. Are crazy, Rhody?

I'll give you that there certainly are a bunch of AWFUL songs in this grouping (including Hate it or Love it, which shouldn't even be in the top 500 RAP songs of all time), but I cannot believe you would so overlook Hail Mary.

Good lord, when that song drops with the bell tolling, and that slow, dark beat starts hitting...then the beat cuts out and...

"I ain't a killer but don't push me, revenge is like the sweetest joy next to getting p*ssy. Picture paragraphs unloaded, wise words being quoted, peeped the weakness in the rap game and sewed it..."

HOOOOOOO! That is just straight fire, and for someone who had become a commercial artist, no less.

Man, even though that song was played out AND I was never a HUGE fan of his (but I respected his work immensely), it always does one of two things to this day-

1) Gets me very fired up to work out, get in a fight, play sports, etc.

2) Gives me goosebumps.

The video was creepy for that reason, as they play on it (The album concept was that he was rising from the dead- much like Biggie, it's strange how much he anticipated his death). Its basically him coming for some guy who is shut up in a house during a huge thunderstorm.

They got a guy who was pretty much Pac's doppleganger and used him in certain shots (like when the guy was looking out the window, terrified out of his mind, and lightning struck to light up the scene).

Ughh...I guess the best is Offspring. HM to Schooly D. Worst is divided equally among the other 8.

This is a long list.

Even though it's a song primarily for the ladies simply by the content of the video, Untitled (How Does It Feel?) is the best song on this list for me.

Nelly should be hanging out with Game and Busta somewhere...OFF THIS LIST.

I like a lot of songs that wouldn't/shouldn't make a top 500 list as well. That one surprised me by being included.

For the latest installment, my favorite is Don't You (Forget About Me). Least favorite (of the ones I know) is that Wynonna song. Again...why that song is included on a best of anything list is beyond me.

I'm with the folks who are ASTOUNDED that "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" is ranked all the way down at #431. It's not even my favorite Smiths song -- that's a tie between "How Soon Is Now" and "The Headmaster Ritual" -- but there weren't 430 better songs recorded over the last 25 years.

And to put "Walking on Thin Ice" over "Let Me Go"...dear Lord.

I'm beginning to think they just picked song titles out of a hat.

I don't think the list is faulty just because the Smiths aren't in the top 10. The list is faulty because the best songs ever recorded happened before 1980.

The chart is probably based on record sales, chart position, radio plays, and cult status.

I don't believe I ever said anything about it being a bad list simply because The Smiths aren't in the Top 10. (For all we know, they are...and now that you brought it up, they probably should be.)

And, FWIW, the definition of the list is the 500 best songs recorded since 1980. What happened before then is irrelevant to this exercise.

A lot of popular music is just that, popular. Popular doesn't mean good. Popular means it's likeable enough that throngs of people will buy it, but not necessarily meaning people will buy it 25, 30 years down the road.

Britney Spears is popular. Will people be buying her records in 30 years? Probably not.

In the last 25 years, how many musical genres have we experienced? The tail-end of disco, new wave, rap/hip-hop, grunge, teen pop, and that pseudo-Latin music performed by Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.

I don't think there have been 500 great songs to come out of those genres. The best music came from 1955-1980, and that's the year John Bonham and John Lennon died.

Decent music went with them.

Kinda sad... I'll never have the chance to see most of my favorite bands in concert because less than a handful still have all/most of their members living. Seen the Stones once, just missed out on Cream--maybe the Kinks will get back together someday...

I've gone through periodic bouts of giving "modern" music a shot, and every time I get fed up with it. Most of the modern stuff I listen to is a small handful of hip hop every now and again, Lifehouse, a bit of RHCP. I haven't listened to the radio in 2 years.

You really have to go back in time to find the good bands. I found a cult band called Hanoi Rocks and they opened up new worlds of music to me. Most of the current artists I listen to don't have anything commercially released here.

Decent music went with them.Nowhere did I say "popular music" either. I said "great songs". Rest assured that Britney Spears wouldn't know or record a "great song" if someone beat her over the head with it.

And in your genre listing, you missed alternative (totally distinct from grunge & new wave) and dance music in all its permutations (house, techno, trance, tribal, etc etc etc). Both were/are huge.

As much as I love "classic rock" (Beatles, Stones, Who, Led Zep, etc), if I were to simply write off anything after 1980, I'd be blowing off groups/solo artists such as New Order, Underworld, Pixies, Pogues, Nirvana, Stone Roses, House of Love, Sonic Youth, Guns 'N' Roses (yup, them), Air, Happy Mondays, Teenage Fanclub, Hole, Massive Attack, My Bloody Valentine, Public Image Ltd, Sugar, 808 State, Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers, Snoop Dogg, U2, Simple Minds, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Everything But the Girl, Jesus & Mary Chain, Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Moby, Orbital, Public Enemy, Tricky, R.E.M., Cure, Duran Duran, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Fall, Husker Du, Pretenders, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The The, Thompson Twins, X, etc etc etc. (BTW, most of those groups -- an excerpt of my personal favorites -- are largely from 1980 through the early 1990's...which totally shows my age, to be honest.)

Anyway, to just write off that time period would be a crying shame. Because there are so many more than 500 great songs recorded in the last 25 years. Honestly, there are.

Grunge and alternative are often interchanged, which is why I didn't list it. They might be different, but anytime I've heard it, have been in place of grunge and vice-versa. As for dance music, yes I left that off and that was an error.

However, if you take all those artists you listed and gave me their top 5 songs, you wouldn't get 500. Some of those artists are ones I listen to a lot, like Depeche Mode (seen them in concert a few times) and U2 (who I've also seen in concert a few times).

I never said that there wasn't good songs after 1980. I said that I doubt there have been 500. Maybe there were and maybe there wasn't, but any list that would put Yoko Ono ANYWHERE already loses credibility.

And start looking by not looking on the radio.
I know that's not the best place to "look". I take a lot of suggestions from friends who listen to all kinds of stuff, and I just don't really like any of it. For example, though I've managed to convert my fiance into a huge classic rock fan, he's also really into a bunch of rare ska and un-mainstream music that he's tried to get me into. I found it ok, but it just gets old--you can only take so many "horns plus bouncy guitar plus bad singing" songs in a row.

Only recommendation from a friend that I've ever fallen in love with is the Velvet Underground, who's as old as everyone else I like.

Maybe there were and maybe there wasn't, but any list that would put Yoko Ono ANYWHERE already loses credibility.Let's put it this way...I'm in the process of pruning/reviewing/restocking my iPod. And I have at least 10,000 song files to choose from on a spare hard drive. And out of that 10,000, I'd say at least 7,000 of them are from after 1980. So I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find 500 great songs from my favorite bands (which I didn't even list completely above) alone. And even if I couldn't, there are other post-1980 artists with a few great songs -- or just one great song -- I could use to fill any extra slots.

I could also find 500 great songs from 1955 - 1979 as well from my collection. Easily.

As for the Blender list, I totally agree it has problems. Already. And we've only seen #431 - 500.

   :2thumbs:

Perfectly stated. A lot of great music came out of the 80's/90's. It just wasn't on MTV or a clear channel radio station 24/7.

As for my list, it was admittedly totally slanted toward new wave/alternative/dance, my favorite genres. So...how about Michael Jackson? "Thriller" had some pretty great tracks. And, on the other end of the spectrum, I give you Ozzy Osbourne. ("Crazy Train" and "Flying High Again", among others, are total classics.) Hell, how about Madonna. YES, MADONNA. She's looking a little haggard these days & not sounding much better, but think back a few years...she recorded quite a few pretty great songs back in the mid-1980's through the mid-1990's.

And on the Madonna note, it's interesting that she is so "respected" these days, as a lot of what brought her fame initially was her being a two bit whore.

I hate the new version of Madonna. It's laughable when she interviews and tries to incorporate a British accent into her speech. You're not prim or proper, you slut, and the condescending, elitist attitude you put on display these days is an absolute joke. The music world passed your worn out ass by a couple of years ago.

Wow, what an original opinion. Britnet Spears sucks. Is her music a good representation of the music of the last 25 years? Of course not. Your post is the equivalent of saying music in the 60s sucked, and citing The Monkees as proof. There's always been crap. There's also always been quality. And what the heck did John Bonham ever write?

If you can't find any "decent" music in the last 25 years, then you aren't trying very hard. I pity you.

I don't want to miss a thing belongs on the list of "Worst songs that you inexplicably liked in high school and that you and your high school sweetheart referred to as 'your song' when you would talk about getting married and loving eachother forever." That is a horrendous song.

Also, Tori's "Cornflake Girl" should be MUCH higher. That is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Considering her voice, and what I've heard so far, I'd say it's pretty safe to say it sucks.

How much of the album have you heard? Have you heard anything outside the lead single? The lead single is not always indicative of how the album will sound. Sometimes a poor lead single choice can ruin an album, but I'll wait to hear more of it to determine whether or not I'll buy it.

Plus, it is currently 25 years after 1980. It has no hope.

Given the most recent crap that Madonna has churned out, anyone who is supporting this latest Confessions of a Dancefloor obviously doesn't listen to or appreciate music for the actual composition of the sound and lyrics, but instead simply for the name on the album cover.

That is a major problem with much of the crap that is produced today.

I've heard more than that, not the whole thing I'm sure, but enough to know it's just as sucky as everything else she's ever made.

American Life sucked, but Ray of Light and Music were awesome. All I've heard is the lead single, and I like it......but I need to hear more before I decide to buy it.

Sometimes I just like music that's fun to listen to in the car or when I'm relaxing at home.......I don't always want music that has deep philosophical value.

Depeche Mode, U2, Madonna, Aerosmith, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera (not the first album, but Stripped), Goldfrapp, Darren Hayes (his solo work), Delta Goodrem, Iio, Janet Jackson.....and that's just what I see on my desk.

So when referencing modern music, why cite people like Ricky Martin, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez, which you don't listen to, instead of the music you do listen to? Doesn't that strike you as a tad disingenuous?

Agreed completely.

People wouldn't even look twice at her if she wasn't such a whore back when she first started. I'm not going to buy her album just because she's a "name."

I'm a f*cking moron. That's why. I just love to say stupid things so that faceless screennames can make me feel like an idiot for not liking most modern music.

You've figured me out. Congrats.

Fantastic counter-argument. And I'm not implying that you're an idiot, I'm implying that you're dishonest.

Being perfectly honest, I REALLY liked that song.

I don't know of a song that I can remember that had a more haunting sound.

Coming into this a wee bit late but personal disputes do not belong in these threads. Nor do personal insults. And calling Madonna a whore/slut runs afoul of our community standards which prohibit name-calling and bashing of anyone. Don't make me have to close this thread. Thanks.

I liked it as well. I thought the video suited the song.....a flashy video would have made the song lose emotional resonance.

I'm not a Sinead O'Connor fan either but that song is really great. I hope it's high on the list. She may be a freak but she is probably one of the few women who could have a shaved head and an extreme close up on TV and still look good too!

According to Community Standards bashing of players, media, coaching staffs, etc. is not allowed. No mention of celebrities, particularly ones like Madonna who made their name with an image of... questionable character. How far does that extend? Is it suitable to call a prostitute a whore? For instance "I can't believe Hugh Grant cheated on his gorgeous wife with that nasty whore, Divine Brown." I'm just trying to gauge exactly what the limitations are on here.

...there is PLENTY of evidence to back it up in numerous books and interviews, including those done by Madonna herself.
My then-boyfriend bought Madonna's Sex book the day it came out. Wow. It was page after page of Madonna in photos thisclose to pornography.

It was also pretty hot. :2thumbs:
