I'm uninformed...what does "Bittersweet Symphony" have to do w/ Mick?
Bittersweet Symphony contained a sample of a Rolling Stones song. Richard Ashcroft (lead singer of the Verve) didn't credit them in the song's credits and the Stones sued and won all royalties for the song.

"Bittersweet Symphony" is one of my favorite songs, although you gotta love RumpShaker. :)
All I wanna do, zooma zoom zoom zoom and a boom boom!
Apparantly in the song there's a sample from a symphonic version of the Stones' "The Last Time". The Verve re-formed to put out the album "Bittersweet" was on and once it became a hit, the Stones sued and now 100% of the publishing rights/proceeds from the song go to them.

Well, it was on "Make It Big", but George Michael wrote it and performed it himself, so I can see why they'd want to credit it as a solo effort.

It's a shame because Blender probably excluded a great song like "Harbourcoat" or "Sitting Still" in favor of Everybody Hurts.

Absolutely not. The term "emo" is being thrown around way too frequently these days. It seems like any band with a punk, indie or Brit pop sound is being labled "emo" by people who don't know any better. God forbid a band doesn't sound like Drowning Pool or they're slapped with the emo tag.
Sorry for the mini rant. This is just a pet peeve of mine because I absolutely hate emo but I listen to a lot of indie, brit pop and even some punk and it annoys me when they are lumped in with the emo scene.

Agreed. However I think it can be agreed that some bands do blur some lines.
But alot of these mainstream bands are trying to sell the image of "punk" or "emo" or whatever group kids want to place themselves in.

Correct me if I am wrong (and I am an indie music fan like yourself) but isn't indie music just anything outside the mainstream or simply on an independent label. And at its start emo was outside that mainstream, (and in a way still is as it doesn't receive major mainstream radio play) thus making at least in its beginnings emo.
Also a number of "indie" bands sound a whole heck of a lot like emo bands. Alot don't but some do. I think this is where the lines are blurred. Same thing goes for punk.

Gotta disagree with you. I kinda grew up in the emo scene (actually more on the outskirts of it, my friends were in popular emo bands and stuff and i just listened to the music I don't really like getting caught in "scenes"). Anyway lots of emo kids think they are really cool and part of their coolness is reflected by how many obscure emo bands they know or are into. Most of them wouldn't be caught dead listening to Blink182. To them Blink is mainstream just like Britney Spears or something.

AP is just a magazine and they have alot of different stuff in it, not solely emo (punk, emo, hardcore, some indie). And I am not saying NO emo kids like them, I am just saying a lot of emo kids who are into an emo band when they were unpopular will drop them once they become popular (which I think is lame, if you like a band you should stick with them). It's a common occurence.

HA my bad, bad assumption on my part. The magazine and that site cover basically the same stuff. I was at TBS's first show at a bakery in Islip a bunch of years back, I went to the same youth group as some of the band members and hungout with them on occasion.

That doesn't just happen with emo bands. Most bands lose fans when they make it big. Their ''fans'' think they sold out by signing a major label deal. Green Day is one that comes to mind. They were crucified by the punk elite when Dookie came out. Now those same people are 10 years older and love them for making American Idiot because it appealed to the masses. It's funny really.

"Emo" is a very specific genre of music that has punk roots, but with a more "emotional" (hence the term "emo") vocal style. I find it extremely irritating, but to each there own. "Indie rock" is a more catch-all term for bands on independent labels or that started off on independent labels (e.g., Death Cab, R.E.M.), so yes I suppose you could lump some "emo" bands into the Indie category.
I think the term "emo kid" bothers me more than anything because people tend to use it to describe anyone with shaggy hair who shops at Urban Outfitters and listens to any form of rock music that is not metal or mainstream. Meanwhile most people I know who are into what I consider "Indie Rock" or Brit Pop wouldn't be caught dead listenting to My Chemical Romance or Yellowcard. It's a totally different scene.

one more thing. as a music form and a specific sound indie is very hard to define, nearly impossible. Which is where the murkiness enters.
Agreed, although I still think of Punk and Emo differently than "indie". Really I think of Indie Rock as the category that in previous iterations was known as "Alternative" (before record companies appropriated the term and applied it to any rock band that wasn't Bon Jovi), "Post Modern", and "New Wave".

Yah good call. So do I, despite what I might have said I really do. But when do those bands crossover. Yes Modest Mouse might have an indie sound and stuff but are they still considered indie now that "Float On" has been overplayed as song ever has been.
We should start an indie music thread and discuss these important issues.

230 - Tone Loc "Wild Thing"

227 - Basement Jaxx "Where's Your Head At"

224 - Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime"
223 - Stacey Q "Two of Hearts"
222 - Panjabi MC "Mundian to Bach Ke" ??
221 - Mission of Burma "Academy Fight Song"
Best: Since I only know 3 of these songs it has to be Ton Loc just for the comedic value.
Worst:Stacey Q
Is "Where's Your Head At" that stupid song from the Pringles commercial? If so then I'll have to say that one is my least favorite. Stacey Q is pretty bad too.
I'd go with Wild Thing as my favorite because it just puts me back there in the day. I also like that Panjabi MC song. It's got a good beat. And Tracy Chapman always gets props.

213 - Tom Petty "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"
212 - The Strokes "Last Nite"
211 - Beenie Man "Dude"
Well...finally a list worth debating about for more then 30 seconds. I wanted to say 7 nation army was my favorite, but it really doens't have the lasting power of U2. "I Will Follow" is one of their best songs which is rare for a bands first track ever.
Worst: No contest...Sean Paul. Bob Marley is rolling over in his grave at this type of "reaggae"
Guilty pleasure: not only is semi-charmed life very singable, but the first 8 tracks of that cd are great.

Guilty Pleasure(s): U2.
Hold on a minute here. I don't see how you could possibly slap the guilty pleasure label on "I Will Follow". Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" is a guilty pleasure. "I Will Follow" is a classic rock and roll anthem.

Oooh, there's some good ones here:
#1 - "I Will Follow" - just a great song, and very impressive that it was his first song
#2 - "Semi-Charmed Life" - the best thing I ever heard was the band saying that only in America could a song about drug use and sleezy sex become a top 40 hit.
#3 - "Life Is A Highway" - just a great song to sing in the car in the summer with your windows open. Those little things, right?
#4 - "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" - I like it even though I did once sing it in karaoke once.
I actually like most of the other ones, I just don't feel like trying to order them, but those are definitely the top 4.

Thats not what a "guilty pleasure" is. A guilty pleasure is a song that you LOVE, but are fairly embarrassed by that fact. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is a guilty pleasure. If it comes on the radio, 10 times out of 10 I will turn it up and sing along, until of course someone notices and then I become acutely embarrassed.

Well, no one else I know that likes U2, likes that song. I only like the live version they did on SNL.......I'm not a fan of the album version. "Bastards of Young" (classic video, BTW) is right up there with "Left of the Dial" as far as Replacements songs are concerned, and "Debaser" is a close runner-up for me to "Wave of Mutilation" as my favorite Pixies song.

I'm not sure what the criteria for making this list was, but I'm assuming it had to do with album sales and time spent on the charts. Sad to say, that song was number one for a while and made a lot of money.

Best: "You Oughta Know" -- I'm not gonna go quite so far as to say that Alanis changed rock the way Nirvana did, but look back in time at how many angry females hit the charts after the Summer of '95. That was her & the song's impact. In fact, I'm surprised it's not higher.
Worst: "Maps" -- I know I'm in the minority, but I don't get the 3 Yeahs.
HM: "Beautiful" -- Great message and actually inspiring to some.
