Sounds good. Anyone plan on picking up this bad boy? It's over $80 on mlb's website, but only $55 on amazon. Says it comes out the 11th.
Of course the Red Sox version is like 12 discs and includes every ALCS and World Series game from last year. Bastards.

My friend bought that 12 disc set. Every time I'm over, I ask to watch game 3 of the ALCS. I think he's gonna let me keep that one. Don't know why a Sox fan would want that anyway.

Why would they put a section in for the pitch by pitch from Wohlers to Leyritz when Game 4 is included in it's entirety?
I've been in talks with the company putting that DVD out about doing some kind of promotional contest here on the site, so keep your eyes out. Just one of 1,000,000,000 things I have to catch up on now that I'm back.
If you want to go ahead and buy it now, why not use the Amazon box at the bottom of the page and help support NYYF at the same time? Just put 'B0009PLM6M' in the search box, and off you go :).

A curious compilation. There are several game broadcasts that SHOULD be on this set that arent (shouldn't all the World Series clinching games be on ANY "Championship Collection"?), "footage" from no-hitters and Perfect Games (NOT the whole games), and only five discs - two of which feature the World Series highlight films - something that many people willing to shell out the bucks for this set probably already have.
A similar set was just released for the Red Sox that had 10 discs and almost every game the Sox ever won on it! That in mind, I wonder what the reasons behind skimping on the discs (and games) was.
Still, it IS an impressive collection, just not something for the completists. I already have most of this stuff on tape, but it will be nice to have broadcast-quality copies of these games. For those who DON'T have these games already, it will be nice to have them without some annoying "Yankees Classics" logo superimposed on them and scores crawling across the bottom of the screen.

Sounds sweet. I need to pick that up.
I have take some issue with the game choices. Game 3 vs SD instead of Game 1? Game 1 was the best game in that series. Also, why include anything from the AZ series? I know those two games were special but we lost that series. I'd also have liked to have seen game highlights from all of the playoff games each year.

Looking at the Red Sox DVD on amazon.com, they have the full games of all 7 ALCS games and all four WS games. That's eight wins and three losses in their entirety. Our DVD collection has five full games. However, the Sox DVD collection only has one MLB World Series Video, since they've only won once, while the Yankee collection needs room for four full MLB videos, plus all of the extras.
As for the clinchers, I'd personally rather have the really exciting games in their entirety rather than a clincher that was less "exciting," as long as they have highlights of the clinchers and video of the last plays, though I totally understand why you'd want them. I'd rather watch Scotty Bro win it off of Hoffman in the 8th with a dramatic three run homer than the Yanks win a 3-0 game. or Curtis's walkoff homer than a 4-1 win. I just think that the exciting game would be more fun to watch again, considering that we all know that they're going to win both of them. I have no problem with the selection though, like you, I'm perplexed that they didn't make it more DVDs and add another full game or two at least, since there are so many to choose from. It doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense to have 12 DVDs for 1 WS and 7 for four WSs, but I think they've made a good selection, given the amount of DVDs they have.
I'll be getting this collection for sure. :)

Minus these factors
The only audio track available is Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, and there are no subtitles available. The announcing team of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver anchor the broadcasts of each of the four FOX games, while Bob Costas and Joe Morgan anchor the one NBC broadcast.
--------------
Would have loved 5.1 audio and Radio broadcasts of John Sterling and Michael Kay :(
Whats with the no subtitles?

I have been watching these after renting from Netflix (I do have the broadcast originals on VHS). You do wish there was more pre and post game information. Perhaps some "baseball experts" could have done a supplement on the game. Get Torre/Cox/Bochy to explain their moves. Would it have hurt to put a menu with box score/play by play results for people who want to look at it. A decent job but the people who did this put on a bare minimum. I prefer to buy DVDs with all sorts of extra audio commentaries/"making of" features. Some explanations may help for people who grew up without knowing things like why Chad Curtis snubbed Jim Gray in 1999.

Not so fast kid! Hey... don't knock the old stuff. I had my old multi-reels, or what you kids would call "feature" films nowadays. Had em from 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918. Watched them all the time.
Then the film started cracking and then the damn projector broke back in 66'. Life just hasn't been the same since. http://xs12.xs.to/pics/05035/icon_old.gif

The New York Yankees Fall Classic Collector's Edition 1996-2001 is the perfect counterargument for Yankees fans who've gotten tired of cocky Red Sox fans bragging about their comprehensive 2004 World Series DVD set. Sure, Boston finally broke its curse and in the process branded the Bronx Bombers as the greatest chokers in sports history. But let's not forget that it was the Yankees who won four of the last five World Series of the 20th century--1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000--and if this seven-disc set doesn't include every game of every series like the Red Sox set... well, that's because there are simply too many championships to cover here.

http://xs12.xs.to/pics/05035/icon_old.gif That play was on one of the reels I was talking about that cracked and turned to dust. You're talking about old "Happy Feet Snotty" or "The Thirty Thousand Dollar Man" Snodgrass that got blamed for the loss because of his muff in center field in the 10th inning with Mathewson on the mound. It was a pretty easy fly ball that he dropped for sure hit by pinch-hitter Engle... who was only batting because Wood was still pissy after letting New York score a go ahead run in the top of the tenth. He was so steamed he couldn't see straight. Anyway, Clyde was on first after the error.
It isn't right to just point at Snotty for that inning. Next batter up was Harry Hooper as I remember it and he hit one hell of a line drive that Snotty caught up with hit this time... a really terrific falling catch he made. It would have made the highlight reels on ESPN today! Engle tagged up and made it to second when Snotty fell. Mathewson then walked the next batter. Men on first and second with one out.
Guess who's up? The best hitter most say in the American League at the time... Tris Speaker stepped up to the plate. Remember there was one down. Spoke lofted a soft foul pop up on the first base side of the infield. Meyers, the catcher for New York, could have made the catch it looked like to me, but Mathewson called him off wanting Merkle instead ... and no one ending up making any catch. Should have been two outs there ... but no.
Spoke was smiling at this fielding failure in the batters box and looked over at Mathewson saying "You called for the wrong man Matty, and that is gonna cost you the ballgame."
Sure enough, on the next pitch Tris saw he drilled a single into right to drive in Engle with the tying run with Yerkes taking third and Tris taking second on the throw home.
Giants manager John McGraw came out of the dugout to talk to Mathewson and ordered Matty to walk Duffy Lewis to set up a double play possibility.
The next batter was third sacker Larry Gardner ... who didn't hit a ground ball ... but ended the game instead with a deep fly ball to right which easily score Yerkes. Game over. Boston 3, New York 2.
Poor old Snotty still gets the blame though. http://xs12.xs.to/pics/05035/icon_old.gif
Wish I still had the old reels. :(

When I saw this I was sure the Yankee set was the full set of the four titles from 96-00. I'm surprised that they wouldn't do something like that. As expensive as it would be I would think it would be worth it. Also, this clarifies why it includes games from '01. I kept wondering why they would include the seven games of a WS that the Yanks lost (now I realize it's just random games). Still, I don't understand why MLB wouldn't put together a complete set?
I see this becoming a regular thing with MLB putting together different sets for different teams although I doubt they'll be as much demand in other places like there is in NY or Boston.

Wow, just a guess but I'd say someone over at Amazon.com is a Yankee fan. Barnesandnoble.com was a little bit tamer:
The New York Yankees set the world of baseball ablaze under the leadership of manager Joe Torre in this release featuring five complete World Series games from 1996 to 2001. As the Yankees take on such formidable foes as the Atlanta Braves, the San Diego Padres, the New York Mets, and the Arizona Diamondbacks, fans can truly see why the Bronx Bombers are one of the most deserving teams ever to win the World Series.

Seriously, the 1912 World Series had an unbelievable game 7. Fred Snodgrass, anyone?
Actually the Fred Snodgrass "$30,000 muff" game was game 8, not game 7. It was a best-of-7 World Series but game 2 ended in a 6-6 11 inning tie, called because of darkness (no lights). In Game 7 Boston ace Smokey Joe wood (34-5) was warming up when a fight in the stands delayed the start of the game. The fight started when the seats of the "Royal Rooters", hard-core Red Sox fans, had been sold to other fans due to a front office mixup. Wood's arm tightened up and he gave up 6 runs in the first inning. Wood had been held back from starting Game 6 "to save his arm" which didn't please Wood's brother who had put a large bet on the Red Sox clinching in game 6. Great World Series, I would watch it if it came out on DVD. I always wonder if any of those old World Series were ever filmed, if the films survive and if they were not filmed, why not?

but i want to buy some complete WS games of the yankees... did they never make a collection for the NYY like they did for the red sox in 04??
would appreciate some help...

i agree... the fall collectors set is AWESOME!!! watching it is now just another daily activity for me... i would definitely recommend it any yankee fan, and even non-yankee fans because after watching it, they will be fans soon enough (unless they're already a part of red sox nation, in which case, is already too far beyond redemption).

There pretty good. Extras are footage of famous moments from the person's career and stories from the interviews that were left on the cutting room floor
One problem though is that they don't have the Yankeeography opening sequence and ending credits for each episode, but its just a nit pick

well, mostly becuz my mom is a red sox fan. she's actually the one who bought the collection, but she refuses to watch games 1 through 3 and i refuse to watch anything else.
i mean, yeah, it sucks knowing that we lost 4 in a row to THEM, but i just really enjoy watching the Yankees play. And I looooove seeing Moose pitch in Game 1 (against Schilling, who lasted only 3, while Moose threw a perfect game for 6 straight).

i understand that but they have 2001 highlights and game four of 2001, and right on the box it says 1996-2001. i think its a great set i love it, but i wish it had the '01 dvd.

i just got this for my b-day, and it is a must for all Yankees fans. this is the first time i have seen any footage of the 2001 WS since 2001 and i must say the inclusion of Game 4 was worth it. the games, especially Game 3 of 98 versus San Diego brought back vivid memories from college. ah, what a collection!

I know how you feel - it is a great set - lets revamp the pitching and have a new one to add next yr.

Thanks for the info, Jim. I'll be sure to include this in my letter to Santa Claus this year.

I probably won't find the nerve to watch until December. :(
Hopefully this isn't breaking any rules, but this set is on sale for $19.95 at the A&E online store, with a free world series pin set. Good deal for those of us who haven't picked it up yet.

The only complaint that I have about the set is that the 5 dvd discs( 1996-2001 games) would freeze during the 5th or 6th innings of the games... I bought two of them thank goodness, so it isn't a huge problem.

Yep, absolutely EXCELLENT deal. Many thanks for posting it. Ordered mine 2 days ago. :D
If you value the DVD set at $60 and the pins at $20, that's an $80 deal for $20. Doesn't get much better than that.
I received this DVD set last year from my mother for Christmas. Thanks for the heads up on the great deal. I just purchased it for my brother for Christmas. Here is another set that I just got and it's a dandy as well.

That's funny you say that because when I ordered this through Amazon the price was $38.00 but they only charged me $14.99. They said it was a special promotion for buyers that bought it before it was released. :)

Just a bump to let people know that today is the last day of the deal from A&E.

Received mine yesterday. Pretty nice set. It will go behind my bar with the rest of the Yankee memorabilia.:)
Hope to find it under my tree come December 25th.
Thanks, guys.
I saw the pin set come in the mail at my dad's place. I think it's fairly certain that I'll be getting this early next week.
Funny story... I told my stepmother I knew what was in the package, told her about this thread and she insisted it was for my father. Then, my dad came home, and she told him HIS pin set came in the mail. He looks at me and whispers "That's for you, you know"....
Ah, always fun times at xmastime with those 2.
Happy Holidays to all!
