View Full Version : Do you think a coin flip to determine home fields for one game playoffs is right?

Personally I would like to see them move to season series/head-to-head winners getting home field, and then perhaps a coin flip if tied.

Do idiots know how to play tic-tac-toe? Can you imagine Mussina vs Millar?

I think they should pick the hottest wife from each team and have a mud wrestle match, I know it's a little out of the mainstream, but it's a lot more exciting then a coin flip. :D

I would rather it be determined by seasonal series, but w/e.considering it's 19 games, there's be a definate winner. I agree.

I don't understand the logic behind not having the winner of the season series get homefield advantage at all.

Why doesn't the team with the best record have HFA for the World Series? Don't expect baseball to make sense.

I don't understand the logic behind not having the winner of the season series get homefield advantage at all.Not like there's enough incentive but it puts more pressure on getting the win. A coin flip is arbitrary and could screw a team. I like letting a team be in control of their own future.

This is PURE conjecture, but
I believe the reason for this is to insure the location is set well in advance, so they can get hotels and various arrangements set.
Since the Yanks are Sox play their final series together, the season series may well not be determined until that last weekend. They want to play any tiebreaker games immediately so as not to delay the DS. This way, they don't have to wait for the results of an Oct 2 game to know where an Oct 3 game will be. Thus the coin flip
Now, obviously the Yanks and Indians have already played out their season series. But it wouldn't be fair to determine one series by a coin flip and not another. So they're all coin flip.
That's the only reason I can think of.

yes, baseball has used that excuse before (knowing where the series will be). But it's BS. Other sports (except the Super Bowl) don't need to know that. And even in the WS, they might know the WS will be in the AL city, but they didn't know until Game 7 the last two years whether it was NY or Boston. So how would it be different if they said, If the Yankees win the ALCS the WS starts in NY, because they have a better record than the NL winner, but if Boston wins the ALCS it will be in the NL because they have a better record than Boston? Either way they it's not like they can plan weeks in advance knowing where the WS will start -- it's always just a couple of days notice.

I agree completely. To be fair, the tiebreak game is a little bit different because it would be literally the next day after the last game of the season, which is a quicker turnover than anything else in sports. Although even then, you'd have to wait to see what ties exist and thus need to be broken.
It's all messed up.

OK. I took off work today and simulated TicTacToe matchups to predict winners. The simulation was done on a Cray X1E (TM) supercomputer that my grandmother has in her attic. 47 different variables on each player was programmed into the computer. The format was best out of 7 games wins. Each matchup was simulated 1x 10 to the 9th times. Here are the outcomes:
#1 Johnny "the original idiot" Damon vs noted economist Mike Mussina
victory Damon. Said a befuddled Mussina, "If only it had been chess."
#2 Kevin Millar vs Randy Johnson
victory Millar. By forfeit. Johnson ejected because he insisted he was going to be X's after Millar had already picked X.
#3Schilling vs Mo
victory Mo. Interviewed at the postgame buffet between bites of Twinkies a dejected Schilling said, "that guy puts up too many 0's"
#4Manny vs Sheff
victory Sheff. Manny, just being Manny doesnt know how to play TicTacToe
#5 Brandon Arroyo vs ARod
time expired without a winner. ARod kept slapping pencil out of Arroyo's hand.
#6 Otiz vs ARod "The Battle of the MVP's"
victory Ortiz. Ortiz kept making 8 marks for every one made by Arod
#7 Trot "RedNeck" Nixon vs Arod
victory ARod. (editor's note: contest held at 7AM on a schoolday, Nixon was no show.)
#8 Jason Varitek vs Arod
victory ARod. Initial victory given to Varitek, but after conferencing, umpires penalized Varitek for illegal crotch grab in pivotal 7th game.
#9 Battle of the shortstops Jeter vs Rentereria
victory Jeter. Said Renteria, " I just made too many errors."
#10 Battle of the captains.
By mutual agrrement a tie. Joint statement released, "We have too many intangibles for the match to be decided based on the outcome of the games."
#11Ortiz vs Giambi
double forfeit, due to undisclosed "rules" violations
#12Flash "I'll be alright in a minute" Gordon vs Timlin
victory Timlin, due to Gordon's "morning sickness"
#13 Derek Lowe vs Kevin Brown
victory Brown. Although Brown wasnt physically able to play, Theo would not let Lowe play either. Said Epstein, " It is time for Derek to move on."
#15 The OldTimers Matchup aka Jake and the fat man, Rickey Henderson vs Boomer Wells (as in Henderson used to Jake it)
Victory Wells. Won in 4 straight games making a total of 3 marks in each game. Quipped Wells, "I was half drunk from drinking shots of JD with Millar."
#16 Sveum vs Sojo
tie. Neither player could score a mark.
#17 Francona vs Torre
Win Francona. Torre just didnt make any of the right blocking plays.
#18 Epstein vs Cashman
victory Cashman. Said Epstein, "He paid me to lose."
#19 Steinbrenner vs Henry
victory Henry, due to expired time clock. Steinbrenner unable to make marks due to deadlock between opposing Tampa and New York recommendations. Said a defiant Steinbrenner, "I'll get that scarecrow next year."

Football teams have like 18 tiebreakers, none of which involve a playoff game the next day.
In '78, it came down to the final game. Next day's game was a day game in Fenway.
