Looks like I may be making a move to the Left Coast within the next few (6)months. What can you tell me about the Santa Barbara area? I'm flying to California next Wednesday to check out housing and such.
P.S. I'm scare to death of earthquakes. :(

Yes, but I don't know a ton about Santa Barbara, as I've only lived in LA. Beautiful, but housing is expensive. And earthquakes, btw, are usually pretty innocuous, not frightening at all. (That said, I haven't been here for any of the disastrous ones.)

Innocuous until the day I move....with my luck "the big one" will happen on moving day....I know the earth will just suck me up.
Did you move from the East Coast or have you been a West Coaster all your life?

Don't worry about earthquakes, they're pretty rare anyways. Good luck house hunting :)

Well, they're not RARE, but severe ones are. In fact, the San Andreas fault line experiences them all the time, but most are too mild to even be noticed.
Basically, you are not going to get one that splits the ground in half and swallows you and your house.

If you're looking to buy, yes.
If you're looking to rent, no, not really.
But since I'm from NYC/Westchester, my idea of "outrageous" might differ from most Americans'.
The big thing I had to get used to was HAVING to drive everywhere. It used to be driving was an option. It was pure entertainment. Now it can sometimes be a chore. I miss getting on a train & reading the newspaper. But I like the fact that my car is mine-all-mine.
And don't worry about earthquakes.
If you have a lot of breakables, get museum putty (it's like fun tak) from Home Depot. Don't store CD's or books right above your bed. You should be A-OK.

We are going to rent. I've given my 15 year old the option of saying she wants out after a year. I now live in the burbs in Central Jersey.

Cal-ee-for-nya is cool. Santa Barbara is a beautiful place to live. never too hot, never too cold. Just right. Usually.
Housing is pretty expensive here in LA, I don't know what it is like in Santa Barbara though.
As someone already stated, earthquakes happen around here nearly every day. We usually don't feel any of them. A quick look through my earthquake email lists tells me that we have had 24 earthquakes above 3.0 since the middle of June. The only one I felt was the 5.3, and it's 4.2 aftershock. Barely a rumble.

Sounds like a certain story-line from a movie I remember back in the 80s.
Wax on...wax off! Wax on...wax off! ;)
I'm in San Diego, but if I had my choice to live anywhere else in California, Santa Barabara would be the place. Like others have said, it's beautiful. Reminds me of the coast of southern Italy. It's also a southern facing beach town which generally have the best weather, and don't experience the early morning marine layers that most coastal towns experience.
It is expensive though from what I remember (had a friend that went to UCSB) but such a nice town.
Earthquakes? Meh - not much more frightening than a sever thunderstorm to be honest. At least the ones I've experienced so far...

hehe, yeah. It is an automated list from Caltech. Whenever there is an earthquake above 3.0, I get an automatic email telling me where, when, and how strong. Whenever there is an earthquake, me and my buddies take a quick guess as to how strong it was. By the time we get our guesses in, the email is in my mailbox.

Welcome to the land of fruits and nuts. ;)
I was born in San Diego and was also stationed there along with Stockton, Ca. I've never been to Santa Barbara, but I've visited several other places. California is a beautiful state, but as the old saying goes "It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there."
Hope you enjoy it!

It's really not scary. The vast majority of earthquakes that you feel are barely noticeable -- kind of like the rumbling from a large truck going by or a very slight, barely perceptible, "wave" kind of feel. I usually find myself asking others if something was an earthquake or, if I have a drink nearby, looking at it to see if the liquid is moving at all.

Also, the more small earthquakes that happen, the smaller the possibility of a large one hitting. Small earthquakes let the plate tension ease up gently... as opposed to a bigger, violent release of tension.
A small earthquake (or two) a day is good for you.

Just got back from Santa Barbara last night. What an awesome place! It was such a letdown to go from Santa Barbara back to Central Jersey....the only plus is now I have incentive to start packing. After looking at housing it's become fairly clear that we will probably never to able to afford to own a home in Santa Barbara but I can't believe how reasonable the rent is. Rents are comparable to New Jersey but you get so much more for your money...the fitness rooms in the complexes we look at are absolutely awesome. I'll automatically save $1,400 a year in gym fees.
A couple of observations:
It's going to take a while for me to get used to the "laidbackness" of California. Originally I told my boyfriend that I wanted to take 6 months and just chill before I started looking for a job however I think if I do that I'll never get motivated to look for one....I could spend years just lounging.
I'm amazed just how big California is...I thought maybe we could drive from Santa Barbara to Oakland to catch one of the games...didn't realize it was a five plus hour drive. From my house in Central Jersey I could drive to Washington, D.C. in that timeframe.
California bagels and pizza suck. What's with that?
For some reason I thought it would be much warmer than what it was. I actually had to go to a mall and buy a few things. I sort of thought it was in the 80's and 90's all year round but most of the days it was in the 60's and 70's....don't get me wrong I'm not complaining...it's heavenly.
I'll never ever go to Jersey beaches again after going to the East Beach and the Emma Wood State Beach. The beaches are unbelievable.
I'm glad I'm past college age....got to tour the University of California Santa Barbara campus (my boyfriend's new place of employment) ...If I was younger it would take me at least 7 years to graduate (hey, I get sidetracked easily!)
We went to the high school where my 15 year old would go and she fell in love with it. The administration gave her a tour of the facilities...it was the second day of school for them and they went out of their way. The students were awesome to her.
Is there no public transportation in California? You absolutely have to drive to get any where and every where.

Welcome to life outside of the Northeast. Rents make sense, and you actually move into places that don't require painting/fixing up/pest control.

Welcome to misconception number 1. I'll have friends and family visit, and constantly they want to do Disneyland or Universal.."We'll just hop in the car and spend the afternoon." Umm..no, you won't. You'll hop in the car, spend 6 hours driving, and then go to a hotel, wake up the next morning, spend the day, then hop back into the car and drive another 6 hours.
Once I had a couple of friends visiting and one of them mentioned she'd like to have lunch with her brother in Torrence one afternoon. I explained it would be hard because I live in northern CA. She stared at me blankly. I further explained Torrence was 8 hours away. She cancelled lunch plans.
California bagels and pizza suck. What's with that?
There is no one good answer. You WILL find decent alternatives to what you're used to, though. It'll never be as good, but after a while you'll be able to convince yourself it's not bad...just different. ;)
For some reason I thought it would be much warmer than what it was. I actually had to go to a mall and buy a few things. I sort of thought it was in the 80's and 90's all year round but most of the days it was in the 60's and 70's....don't get me wrong I'm not complaining...it's heavenly.
Misconception number 2. All of CA is NOT one giant Beach Boys song. We actually do get "weather" out here. Not as extreme as NY, obviously, but it's there. We've spent most of August with our windows open at night...and it's been downright chilly. Unfortunately, our summers last a little longer than NY. I say "unfortunately" because I hate summer. If you love it, get ready for nirvana. Where we are, it is sunny virtually every day from March until October. We'll get early morning fog that usually burns off by mid-morning. Fun at first, but it gets on my nerves after a while.
Is there no public transportation in California? You absolutely have to drive to get any where and every where.
Yup. Forget public transportation. What little there is sucks (I even hate "BART").
All in all, while I do miss so much about NY I have to say living out here has been wonderful. Much easier lifestyle than back east.
Incidentally, you're not an official state resident until you get a Target card.

Santa Barbara weather is usually quite a bit cooler than the LA Basin. While you were chilling in Santa Barbara, we were in the 100s in parts of LA.
And public transportation sucks pretty bad. I have a train stop around the block from my place, but I never use it, cause it never goes anywhere I want to go. Much easier to just hop in the car and drive. California is so spread out, it is just easier to drive than take 5 million trains and busses, only to still have to walk 10 blocks to get to your destination.

Last I remember hearing, Santa Barbara was one of the top 10 most overpriced cities in the US or something like that.
It's going to take a while for me to get used to the "laidbackness" of California. Other than the weather, this is probably the #1 reason why I'm hightailing it away from the east coast after I get out of school in June.
California bagels and pizza suck. What's with that?
Two words: mexican food.
And I don't mean any chain restaurants with the words "Mexican Grill" in their titles. I'm talking the little restaurants and corner taco stands where you see real Mexicans eating. That's always the tipoff that the food is good and authentic.
For some reason I thought it would be much warmer than what it was. I actually had to go to a mall and buy a few things. I sort of thought it was in the 80's and 90's all year round but most of the days it was in the 60's and 70's....don't get me wrong I'm not complaining...it's heavenly. So many of my friends at school have been surprised when I tell them that it's probably hotter in Princeton during the summer than it is where I live. Very close to the beach, it can get downright COLD.

Metrolink is pretty nice, but it doesn't start until Ventura. Almost everywhere has its own bus system in addition to that, but for various reasons, I hate taking the bus.
P.S. I am also terrified of earthquakes, but there hasn't been anything worth being scared over for over 10 years. :)

That thought alone might just make me rethink this whole thing. :(
Actually I've never been a risk taker and have always done the "safe" thing. So this is very out of character for me...I'm both nervous and excited also having a difficult time deciding what I take and what I get rid of. I have TONS of stuff that was my daughters...boxes and boxes of her old books, even baby clothes and lots of her old school work....things that I don't really know why I'm keeping but feel compelled to keep them. I'm also dealing with the fact that I thought I'd always be there for my parents as they got older..... ....thank God though that they are in very good health and very much active....that sort of eases the guilt a little.

Okay I asked my boyfriend last night about Target...his response was 1. first to laugh and 2. to tell me "in order remain a California resident one must shop at Target at least once a week" He also told me that most native Californians think Walmart is evil and warned me that most Walmarts are north of Santa Barbara....so I guess I'll learn to love Target. I must confess I did go on their website and browse...I definitely think I could learn to love it. I was much more concerned with locating a Barnes and Noble and didn't really pay attention to other stores, etc. What grocery store chains are there?

Heh - look, we're half joking about Target. It is what it is - a "super" store that contains a little bit of everything at decent prices. If you enjoy looking at and buying different forms of crap in one place, you'll like it. It is definately a notch above Wal-Mart.
And don't worry - there are plenty of B&N stores located across the state. :)
As for supermarket chains, the main two are Albertson's and Safeway. Both are virtually identical. They're gigantic stores with every single kind of foodstuff you can get your hands on. They have their own bakeries, and they're usually pretty good.

Sorry to have not replied to this thread sooner! Being a So California Native I can tell you that being new to California you are residing in one of the most beautiful spots on the Southern California Coastline!
Im now transplanted to the State of Don M's Neck of the Woods & Wildlife & Farming Landscape which Far Outweighs the Mountains & Coastline of So California.
Mainly because Ive always wanted the 4 Season Climate & I sure do have it now! And being a Days Drive from the Yankees Home Plate is Fantastic!
My first visit to SB was when I was a child my Aunt & Uncle were visiting from the East Coast & we went with them to Visit their Friends in SB. I was enthralled by the Breathtaking Landscape! The Suburbia of Santa Barabra is Cover Material for any Travel or Decorating Magazine for sure!
Two of the Highlights of that trip I remember was visiting the Historic Courthouse of Santa Barabra (beautiful View from the top) & the Mission of Santa Barabra.
The earthquakes of Southern California were never bad for me as I learned to
"roll with em" (doorjams are great!).
As far as Stores go for shopping ! Where I live there are no Mervyns closest ones I believe are in Michigan! They are mainly a Southwest Store! My Husband loved their clothes very reasonable & long lasting!
Also I miss In & Out but Steak & Shake make up for them! Also we do not have any Container Stores or Ikea back here yet. The latest stores opening up here in Southern Indiana are Kohls & TJMax's. And they just opened up a Fry's in Indianapolis in May. So they are getting what Im missing very slowly!
But I will gladly go back to So Cal for visits to those stores just to stay in this beautiful part of God's Country back here!
Coming up in just a few weeks will be something that Southern California never gets & thats the Fall Colors! I can hardly wait!
Have Fun & Dont let the High Cost of Living or those High Gas Prices get ya down!!!
Public Transportation?! Santa Barabra Im sure has a Mass Tranist (bus system)!
& also there is always Amtrak!!
But a small econmy car to see all of So Cal is always the best way of travel!

There's a 50-50 chance you'll fall in love with SoCal. I'm a New York transplant and I still can't get 100% used to the way people interact. The earthquakes, just get under a door frame and you'll be fine. Santa Barbara is gorgeous and has pretty good wines. Just remember to be a proud East Coaster and don't give in to the comments about the Yanks. The weather is indescribeable. Have fun.

Oh yes....In and Out....I got to experience that place earlier in the month. Awesome. Trust me...I certainly won't miss the New Jersey winters and the dread "s" word. Wouldn't much care if I never saw snow again.

As another transplant from the northeast, just be on guard against the romanticized aspects of winter: beautiful days, temps in the 40s, pristine white snow on the ground, crisp, clean air, great clothes to wear for the weather, etc. -- those scenes are what make me long for New England. I then make myself remember the days that far outnumber the ideal ones: grey skies, gusting winds, rain and hail, digging out the car, dirty grey/black snow on the ground, mud everywhere.

GiambiRocks, if you ever pass through Oxnard, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to Burrito Express on Ventura Road, just past the intersection of Ventura Road and Fifth Street. Order anything, because it's all good, though my favorite is probably the wet burrito with chile verde. Cheap Mexican food NEVER tasted so good.
Avoid bad chain restaurants involving the words "Mexican Grill" in them and opt for the authentic.

I'll also add that it takes about 5 years (maybe more, maybe less -- depending on the individual) to get acclimated to the winter temperatures out here. Yes, I used to laugh at people wearing heavy coats out here.
Yes, I still know that it's ridiculous.
But, damn it, I actually get cold out here now!
We're planning to vacation in France this November and I already put long underwear on my shopping list! :)

Tell me about it. I received the 2005 L.L. Bean Christmas catalogue in the mail yesterday and almost wept.

Okay, I actually miss grey skies and rain. The dirty grey/black snow isn't fun, but the initial snowfall is.

Not the hugest fan of Mervyn's, but Ross can bite me. And so can his brothers TJ Maxx and Marshall's.
I don't like Maxx or Marshalls.
And I don't suggest Ross for women.
For men though? $150 designer shirts for $15 because they're last year's style

I wear a jacket as soon as it gets below 60, a sweater below 70. :D
I don't understand how rarely having to face temperatures below 35 is anything to have to get acclimated to. :)

In & Out doesnt have it on the menu but they actually have a 4 by 4 ask for it! My hubby before his stomach surgury used to get it! Its a Really Great Treat........
Four Cheesburgers together in one bun! And those Fries made fresh are also a must!
Hey I havent seen Snow enough yet living over 50 years in cold & wind & blowing sand (that was in the upper desert as a kid!) ! A Winter Wonderland covering the woods & lakes out here in Southern Indiana is a Picture Postcard come to life that I really loved last year. Yes the snow & the ice & the dirty snow is not the best but the First Fresh Snow of the season is White & Georgeous!

I don't understand how rarely having to face temperatures below 35 is anything to have to get acclimated to. :)
Last year first sign of cold back here in December I put on my layers of coats to keep warm in & we had the central heat turned way up in the house!
Then ............ I GOT REAL SICK! So then I countered with a sweater or Velour Jacket if it was cold outside added a scarf if there was snow & turned the heat down to 68 to 70 nothing above that! Wahla my cold went away & I was never sick again till Spring & the first leaves on the trees then my sinus's became infected well an Antibiotic & Claritin Readytabs everyday has taken away my sinus problem!
This next winter season I will again turn the heat on barely & not layer so heavy....still looking forward to that first snow! Of Course first comes the Autumn Leaves!!!!!!!! Ah Beautiful!
There is a difference between the cold 60s in So Cal & the warm 30's to 40's of the MidWest & East! I think its called the "Wind Chill"! If its cold in So Cal that usually means low temps & wind plus if there is no sun! In the East if the Day is 30 or 40 with the sun shining & no wind its a Beautiful Shirtsleeve Day!
:D ;) :P :D

I'd say bring 'em. Any time you take a trip into the desert (Las Vegas, Palm Springs, etc.) during winter, you'll want them. You also might find yourself in the mountains (Big Bear, Mammoth, etc.).

I love Santa Barbara but this has been my first Christmas away from my family ever. Since I started a new job we couldn't go back home...I had the blues yesterday and spent most of the afternoon crying. We are going to Vegas for New Year's so I'm excited about that.
My sixteen year old daughter has adjusted well and my boyfriend was born and raised in California. It's been a little bit difficult making friends being in my 40's and living in a college town. We bought a house so I've been busy with redoing and decorating.

Last night, I woke up at 1 AM thinking I heard hail (the weather's been that weird lately). I'm still not sure whether there was hail but I think it was just the wind knocking tree branches into our bedroom wall/window.
The Wondercat got a bit nervous and was happy to see someone else walking around the apartment.... It was cute but I guess you had to be there....

Looks like I may be making a move to the Left Coast within the next few (6)months. What can you tell me about the Santa Barbara area? I'm flying to California next Wednesday to check out housing and such.
P.S. I'm scare to death of earthquakes. :(
Earthquakes? What earthquakes? I like Solvang. Not real far away ... up to the North. Think some of the beaches there in Santa Barbara have shark-proof nets at the beaches that are far enough away to not hinder body surfing. Nice touch by the city. :D

Glad you're feeling better.
Pretty soon, you're going to be insisting that the whole family comes out to see you in Cali. Then, sure enough, they'll start visiting and moving out here themselves. The first couple of years are the toughest but it sounds like you've got a great support system in your bf!
