It's 11-2 now, folks! The comeback HAS begun.
:barf:
I think Kirby Puckett brought out of retirement half-blind...would be a better hitter then 3/4 of the Twins lineup
The Indians are really pissing me off too. It's got to stop.I'm quite pissed at the Twins. What a crappy team they turned out to be.
Cleveland is never going to lose another game again, ever. :(
Hey you never know maybe Kansas City can be their Tampa Bay? Stranger things have happened.

You don't even want to see the computer projections.....
....however, as this season has definitely shown, that's why they play the games for real and not what's shown on paper.....
The only impressive thing (offensively) that I see about Mauer this year, is his BA with RISP. I agree whole-heartedly, though. They are a terrible offensive team and the FO deserves tremendous flack for it.
He's 21. He'll be the best all around C in the majors in about 2 years.
Another bat I think they were counting on was Jason Kubel's, great offensive talent blew out his knee in the offseason. I think he could have helped them out alot. But their FO has to take some blame for not going out there and getting someone to help them after Hunter got hurt.
Kubel got hurt before the new year. Yes, they were hoping he could contribute. But his absence is by no means a surprise- he was injured at the beginning of the offseaosn.

The projections I've seen all have Cleveland as a heavy fave for the WC. But at least some of those numbers are because the other two divisions are more hotly contested and the WC is probably Cleveland's only way in.

We bitch about certain teams bending over for the Yankees and the Red Sox, but the Twins..............do they even bother showing up to play the Indians?

I agree, and that's why I like how the Yankees are focusing on the division while it's still in reach. However, for all the griping that goes on about the Red Sox never losing any games, they went 3-4 over the last week, and only gave up 1/2 game in the standings. In fact, they had a 3.5 lead a week ago, dropped to 3 when they lost monday ( and the Yankees didn't play), and six days later, even after losing 2 of 3 in NY, it's still stands at 3. The season is not infinite, days are ticking away, and they Yankees absolutely cannot afford to let these types of opportunities slip away anymore ( if they arise). I do not believe the WC is coming out of the east this year. Losing just the one game this weekend was difference in gaining 1/2 game or 2 1/2 for the week. The way things are set up, especially over the next week, I see more opportunity in winning the division than the WC. It's gonna be an interesting (and nerve wracking ) week....

Oh ok. I was thinking he got hurt during spring training, or maybe it was the Fall League. They should have gone after Griffey or Sori though, their owner has the money. If I was a Twins fan I would be frustrated.

He is still with the cubs (I think it is as a Special Assistant in some form), in fact there was talk that he would seriously be considered for the manager role if and when they cut Dusty Baker loose.

5.5 behind the team touted all season as one of the best in baseball.
White Sox have lost 7 straight. The have a schedule full of Det, Minny and KC - but then 2 crucial 3 game series vs the Tribe, including the season closer.
What a story that would be for the WS to be in 1st place all season only to lose it the last week of the season.
We pick up a game in the loss column tonight on either Oakland or Cleveland. Either is fine, but I'm rooting for the A's here.

He's probably the wealthiest owner in baseball. He's unbelievably frugal, though, and is angry at the state for dragging their feet on a new stadium. In fact, the most recent proposal that is likely to go through is one that features a new park WITHOUT a retractable roof. Yeah, April and October games are going to be fun there....

Have to. If the A's play well enough to win a playoff spot, it is very good for the Yanks. Because they will have to beat up on Cleveland, Boston, and the Angels to get in- meaning if the Yanks win their share of games they'll sneak in one way or the other.

I'm quite pissed as well, probably for a different reason. However, they aren't a crappy team, they just have quite possibly the worst offense in Major League Baseball. The only reason the Twins didn't take at least one for you guys in that series was because Santana's lingering finger problem over the last couple weeks finally came to a head and he had no feel for any of his pitches and is probably going to miss his next start.

I know they havent fallen in love with the Indians this year because the same personalites are part of this collection of players. But to only have 20,820 when your 21 games over and leading the wild card is troubling.

But the A's have historically never drawn. The Indians had that 455 straight sellout streak. They will draw, but it appears they have to have an identity first before they can draw.
When they had Thome, Belle, Ramirez, Lofton, Vizquel, Baerga, Alomar and crew, they were a bashing team that was going to kick the hell out of you and make you like it. They were fun.

The A's need to win a World Series and build a new ballpark to draw crowds.
The Indians drew crowds like crazy and they had a lot of good players at the time: Robby Alomar, Carlos Baerga, Albert Belle, Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, Kenny Lofton.

A's pen is pretty bad, outside of Street. Everyone severely overperformed for a few months, but Calero/Witasick/Duscherer are simply not very good pitchers. Street IS, but they need to bridge to him with a terrible offense.

Arthur Rhodes is done for the season, citing personal reasons.
CLEVELAND -- Indians reliever Arthur Rhodes has left the club because of a family illness and will miss the rest of Cleveland's season, a blow to baseball's best bullpen and the club's playoff chances.
"It's going to be tough without him," closer Bob Wickman said. "He has been huge for us all year. We're definitely going to miss him."
Rhodes was in his first season with the Indians, who acquired him in a trade last December with Pittsburgh for outfielder Matt Lawton. The left-hander didn't pitch because of the personal matter from Aug. 2 to Sept. 3.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2160829
The standings are going to be interesting after Sunday's games. Between now and then, Oakland or Boston has to lose at least 2 games, so if we win 4 of the next 5 we're going to pick up good ground on one of them.
Angels getting smoked by Seattle right now- what a horrible series this is turning out to be for them. If this score holds, color me a massive A's fan for the next 5 games. I would root for them anyway, but if the Angels lose the Yanks have a chance to make the West irrelevant over the next few days. Perfect scenario woudl be for the A's to win tonight and then take 3 of 4 from the Sox (I know, asking a bit too much).

Have they disclosed what the illness is or to whom? It must be pretty bad and I'm sorry to hear that...I can't help reading into it and when I read that
"he's married with two daughters", it made me think either the wife or one of the children is sick... Sad
As for baseball, it weakens their pen a lot because he's done well for them and was their primary lefty...but as a Yankee fan, I've always enjoyed facing him...his season to date:
47 games
43.1 IP
33 Hits
12 BB
43 SO
3-1 record
1.04 WHIP
.206 BAA
2.08 ERA
this could be really bad for them down the stretch..

the fact that the AL Central race has tightened up has really helped the Yanks because now there is a much stronger chance that the Indians remaining 7 games against the W Sox will be meaningful for both teams.

In the Cleveland write up, with this quote with Wickman, it mentions that Wicky is a father of 3 and he understands how tough it is and has been for Rhodes. That leads me to believe it has to do with one of his kids, which is horrible. Hopefully whatever is going on, it only gets better now that Rhodes is with his family.
From a team standpoint, we're gonna miss him in our bullpen down the stretch.

Well.....KC just took a late lead in the Chicago game today. Few things-
First, KC is playing a lot better recently than in the past. They've taken series wins from Boston and Oakland over the past month, and could so with Chicago now.
If they do win today, Cleveland is only 4.5 games back. They have 6 games with Chicago- not inconceivable that they could catch them. At the very least, these games will be important for Chicago.

If Chicago doesn't make the playoffs, wow. I mean, wow. If they don't win the central, it is not unreasonable to believe they wouldn't win the wild card either. Because you have to figure Chicago goes, at worst, 2-4 in the games against Cleveland if they are to lose the lead- but more likely 1-5.
I do, however, have a legitimate question regarding KC. Why in the world is Jose Lima getting starts? He's not only the worst pitcher in the major leagues who has pitched anywhere near the innings he's pitched, but he has no future. He's not young. Wouldn't pitching a younger pitcher- even if he was going to fare just as poorly- prove more beneficial in the long run?

Just goes to show what a listless franchise KC is. More than any of the other weak ball clubs, there is no apparent direction for this team.

I agree. However....that still doesn't explain Jose Lima. In fact, Lima makes more $ than a rookie or young pitcher they could slot in there.
Anyway, go KC here on out!!!

Strange to say, but this is a huge game for the White Sox. If they lose here, then drop 2/3 to Minnesota this weekend and 2/3 to the Indians next week, they would head into next weekend in the following situation, assuming the Sox and Yanks both go 5-2 over the same stretch.
Chicago 90-61
Boston 90-62
Cleveland 88-64
New York 87-64
That would set up quite a battle over the last week and a half. Especially since the teams play each other the last weekend and both divisions, the WC and overall best record in the AL could all be up for grabs. What a final weekend that would be.

More good news for the w Sox, Guillen accuses Marte of faking his injury...
If Marte's not ready to help this team, he can have a nice trip to the Dominican Republic by himself," Guillen said before the White Sox played Kansas City on Wednesday night.
Marte's sore neck was examined Wednesday in Chicago by team physician Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, and the team said Marte has a strained muscle on the side of his upper back.
"He said Marte is fine. He's 100 percent to go," Guillen said after learning of the doctor's diagnosis. "If makes you wonder if the injury was mentally or physically. If the injury was mental, it's a shame because that kid has better stuff than a lot of people in this game."

Kevin Kennedy actually makes alot more sense than any other "baseball analyst" out there. He's very objective and doesn't talk out of his ass.
Looking over the standings, in which the A's are falling off fast and should be the first team out, I'm beginning to see another scenario. The Indians and White Sox have 6 games left with each other. If they split, that's excellent for us because the Yanks can take the WC lead if we keep winning. However, if the Indians take 4 or 5, that COULD put us very close to the White Sox if the Yanks stay hot, giving them a different team to catch in the last week. The White Sox winning 4 or more would be the best scenario, but the Indians winning 5 or 6 could help us too. This is a fun race.

Ozzie over-managed that 8th inning. He was running guys in left and right. 4 pitchers.
Ozzie Guillen may be the worst manager in baseball. He's so intent on showing everybody how great he is that he alienates his players and gives away runs and outs.

From leading manager of the year candidate to leading goat of the decade candidate. Poor Ozzie - maybe his craziness didn't work out after all.
I thought he should have just put in Dustin Hermanson to get the last out in the 8th instead of Bobby Jenks (after Damaso Marte left). But, he didn't do too well in the 9th anyway so who knows what would've happened.

Who are these Indians and what the hell is up with the White Sox lately?
Is anyone rooting for a particular team in the Central and West Division?
Although it's still a long shot, for the first time you've got to consider the possibility that the ChiSox not only lose the Central - but miss out on the Wildcard.
I'm still hoping ChiSox take the last two of this series. Either that or get swept.

White Sox tie it up 2- 2 in the bottom of the 3rd.

As long as the Yanks are ahead of both teams, I don't care who wins the West . I will root for the team that is playing against the Central team that is closest in the standings to the Yankees.

The White Sox are up 6-5 in the 9th, but the Indians have Jhonny Peralta on board with Travis Hafner at the plate, Bobby Jenks pitching.

Travis Hafner K's swinging. 1 out for Victor Martinez.

Tied game at 6. Martinez doubles, Peralta to third and scored on a Ronnie Beillard groundout.

That ball should have been caught. Rowand misread the ball - he came in, and the ball went over his head.

Jenks needs to mix that off speed stuff in more.
Why would you not walk Belliard with 2nd & 3rd & 1 out.
Ozzie is gonna lose the Division on his own.

Strikes Broussard out on an offspeed pitch - imagine that.

And without a healthy Dustin Hermanson, it worsens the White Sox bullpen.

Paul Konerko singles. 1 out, 1 on for A.J. Pierzynski.
Two on, one out for Dye.
A Riske situation.

I wonder what Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and his White Sox homers are sayin' to the ball right now.
2 outs... 2nd & 3rd.

They better get rid of the "Hawk" in a hurry if they don't make the playoffs along with Ozzie Guillen.
