Anyone been looking into their keepers for next year? I've been juggling the extended contracts with the 1 year deals. I'm hoping to finish this year off somewhere at the top and I've made some serious headway so far. Still in the middle though. Worse comes to worse I'm gonna go with a few stars with 1 year deal so I don't have to bid.
Here's a preliminary look:
1 yr deals
Jeter 28
Green 10
Ordonez 18
Ichiro 38 (tough but he helps in alot of categories)
P Wilson 5
Silva 10
Multi yr deals:
Shields 1
Zito 11
Wright 19
Lackey 1
Benson 9
Nothing spectacular. Wright, Shields, Zito, and Lackey are probably my best guys. Of course this is with no research, I'll look at values before the draft next year and see where guys sit.
I'm taking a shot with Wright, I might sign him for the full length. he's gonna be a monster in a year or two and I think it will pay off.

Roberts at least 2 yrs
Stewart at least 2 yrs
Peavy option
Tejada option
Tracy 2 yrs
Haren 2 yrs
Blanton option
Giambino option or 2 yrs
Kazmir 2 or 3 yrs
possibly Edmonds/Matsui
and that's just off the top of my head.

Would I be crazy to resign Pujols? Even at $47?

Seeing that a lot of us blew our loads like virgins on prom nite at the beginning of this auction, I'd be willing to bet he goes for much less next year (if you don't).
Unfortunately, I drank too much on prom night and took Mota home thinking it was Lidge or something....

Actually looking at my roster here are my real keepers, contract lengths at this time unknown.
Dan Haren
Joe Blanton
Scott Kazmir
Gustavo Chacin
BJ Ryan
Jason Giambi
Ken Griffey
Mark Teixeira
Brian Roberts
Miguel Tejada
Chad Tracy
Shannon Stewart
That's it, overall I think it's a pretty good start for next year, I might change one or 2 but not more than that.

Yes, but how valuable are the rights to the best fantasy player in the game for the last 5 years?
I know throwing him back to you wolves is gonna mean a 50 spot anyway in the auction. Especially with they SOME of you like to jack the price up.
Plus, it is fantasy and so much for traditional logic. :D

Doh - - I can throw minor league players back right?
Yeah, minor leaguers can be kept with no increase in salary and do not count against your 7-12 player limit, IIRC.
After a great start, my only players who have earned back their salary this year are:
Batista, Miguel RP TOR
Cantu, Jorge L. 2B TB
Clark, Tony 1B ARI
Cordero, Chad RP WAS
Crawford, Carl LF TB
Hoffman, Trevor RP SD
Johnson, Nick 1B WAS
Nixon, Trot RF BOS
Peralta, Jhonny SS CLE
Sanders, Reggie RF STL
Sexson, Richie 1B SEA
Soriano, Alfonso 2B TEX
Willis, Dontrelle SP FLA
I would also consider Adam Eaton, since he'd be positive if he hadn't been injured.
That's 14 players to choose from, and to choose whether or not to sign to a long-term deal or renew. I think it's safe to say that Hoffman is a renewal if I keep him, simply based on his age.
And yes -- to the person in the auction who said I paid for Soriano ($35) based on his 2002 numbers -- he has earned a profit this year. :P

Olson was a minor leaguer; he is $5.
However, he is not on your minor league roster, he is a major leaguer who has been reserved due to a demotion that was not based on a returning injured player (I could be wrong, so let me know if I am). If this is the case, he doesn't count as a minor leaguer; he would have to be protected as one of the 7-12 guys.
Swisher is $5, too, as is Jackson.
Upton is NOT $10. He is either $9 or $13 (I forget how long GHR signed him and don't feel like looking it up right now).

Thanks for clearing that up. I prefer upton to be $9, so GHR, give me an update...
Then that is my keeper list - - the most recent one. All of those guys are in the majors now, so I'll just leave it as that. Very excited about Ryan Howard and Conor Jackson!! The Phillies better make room for Howard...
EDIT: Upton is $13

I'm wondering who is going to be the first guy to receive a 4 year contract...
King Felix is up because of an injury at this point, right?
If so, his contract status may be able to be put off until after the '06 season.
Brian Roberts is certainly debatable ($17 for 4 years)
But after that, I'm not sure.
I think I may actually have the best shot with Delmon Young, who is an absolute monster, and is a hitter which makes it easier to burst on the scene and maintain dominance.
If he comes up next year and plays well, I think he may have the best chance at THIS point in time to be the first 4 year contract.

No way Roberts is worth alot, but not that much, he's getting 3 years max.
Is Dontrelle Willis worth $24? He is signed at $8. (Roto Times says $25)
What about Chad Cordero? Signed at $3, is he worth $19? (Roto Times says $32)
Adam Eaton -- when healthy is he worth $21? (He's low due to injury)
questions, questions, questions...

Wait... with long term deals, the salary increased each successive year? I thought the tradeoff for a long term deal vs a 1 year deal was that with 1 year deals, you have the flexibility to drop the player or re-sign them - - at a $5 increase. With long term deals, you're stuck with the player... you're taking a gamble.

If you renew a player, you get him for one year, at his current (2005) salary, but cannot renew him or sign him to a long term deal after one year.
If you sign a player to a long-term (2-4 year) contract, his salary increases by $4 for each year of the deal.
So a $5 player, signed to a 2-year deal costs $13 A YEAR (4*2, +5)
A $5 player signed to a 4-year deal costs $21 A YEAR (4*4, +5)

I already fought a little for long term deal reform, but no one joined my arguement, I don't like the $4 per year for the entire contract, but no one piped in.

The rules for resigning a player are harsh. When I first read the rules I took it as a $4 increase each season you keep him. Meaning:
David Wright signed for $19, 3 yr extension:
2006 - $23
2007 - $27
2008 - $31
Having the entire amount each year makes it very tough to want to sign anyone to a multi-year deal that didn't cost $1.

I don't think you'll see many 4 year deals, but some of my players can be signed to 4-year deals and still be worth the money (see above). It's a risk though, because if you drop the player you're penalized $1 for each year remaining on his contract.

Its all about making prudent decisions that are well informed and take a good knowledge of the sport to execute correctly.
Its about taking the "luck" factor out of the league, and instead making a team's successes tied more to the active decisions by the owner.
