On the heels of Dan Marino and Steve Young's HOF induction---Skip Bayless decides to write a piece on ESPN.com's Page 2 basically trashing Young and Marino. Instead of celebrating two athlete's accomplishments (and deserved inductions to the HOF) he decides to write an article claiming that both were no "Joe Montana." It just seems that this is typical of sports reporters nowadays and is one reason that athletes don't give more than one word answers anymore. Bayless' entire tone comes off as some 40something year old sportswriter who was probably the last pick in any sport during gym class. Its like he feels the need to trash "jocks" because he was a "geek" in high school. He minimizes Steve Young's accomplishments because Young didn't have to "win" any close games during his one Super Bowl run. I could see that argument being made (which makes no sense because Young's season was statistically better than any one season that Montana ever put up but that's besides the point). He than goes on to say how the Dallas teams "knew" Young would self-destruct in crucial situations. Than he goes on to say how Montana was a better runner than Young. No offense---but I've seen both Montana and Young play. There's NO WAY you can claim Montana had better legs than Young.
Than he goes onto Dan Marino. He basically trashes Dan Marino because Marino played with teams in Miami that didn't provide him with a running game or a superior defense. Of course this is all Marino's fault because he was "uncoachable." So despite his stats and records---Marino is not in Montana's class either. Of course Bayless can't let Elway get away either because if it wasn't for Mike Shanahan (who has won countless rings since Elway retired right?) drafting Terell Davis---Elway would have no rings either. Pure fluff and garbage that has come to be typical of ESPN writing these days. It seems as if ESPN hires guys who need to "scream" their opinions and if they "yell" loud enough they must be right. Its starting to get truly annoying.
