* Checketts steps down as Madison Square Garden CEO

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- David Checketts, who has served as president and CEO of Madison Square Garden and its sports franchises since September 1994, parted ways with the organization on Tuesday.
The 45-year-old Checketts had come under fire after another disappointing season by MSG's hockey property, the New York Rangers, who missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year despite having the league's highest payroll. At the helm of the New York Knicks since 1991, Checketts saw that team bounced in the first round of the NBA playoffs for the first time in 10 years. The Knicks have the league's second-highest payroll.
Cablevision Systems Corporation owns Madison Square Garden and both the company and Checketts said the decision was mutual.
Checketts' role at the "World's Most Famous Arena" also included guiding broadcasting entities Madison Square Garden Network and FOX Sports New York. He had been credited with bringing back championship boxing and expanding the arena's commitment to entertainment. He also oversees the operations of the WNBA's New York Liberty.
