As in the NHL Devils. (Remember the NHL? I think they were a professional hockey league.)

And believe it or not, the offended politician is a black Democrat -- must be from the same womb as Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.
Doesn't he have more important things to do with his time??

State Assemblyman Craig Stanley is taking issue with a satanic symbol representing the team, which has won three Stanley Cup championships.

"This is an age where symbolism is very important," said Stanley, a Baptist deacon whose resolution to rename the team is to be introduced in the Assembly next month. A new name would be chosen in a statewide competition.

.....

"I've always cringed when people say they're going to see the Devils," Stanley said. "The merchandise, the paraphernalia is based on the actual demonic devil. Personally, it causes a little bit of an issue with me."

.....

However, the team's name, chosen in a 1982 fan contest, comes from the mythical Jersey Devil, not the Christian symbol of the antichrist, according to Weird N.J., a travel guide to the state's most offbeat attractions.

What is this NHL you speak of? :thatsodd:

Anyway, how stupid this guy wants to change their name. Is he for real? He needs to find something more important to care about lol.

Maybe they can use the old "Fishstick" uniforms the Islanders had several years ago. A drawing of Stan Fischler on a jersey..truly evil.

It's been tried before...it shouldn't happen and it won't happen.

Lou Lamoriello:

"I can assure you you the Devils name will never change, and I think there are more important things to be thinking about than something that will never happen."

"It's who we are and what we want to be."

It's time to do an investigation on Craig Stanley. I wonder how squeaky clean he is.

Man, I kinda hoped they would get the name changed. They could be the New Jersey Zs
Have a pillow as the logo to signify how boring they are to watch.
Or the, New Jersey our goalie is the most overrated player in the sport. But, it wouldn't fit well on a jersey.

I was always partial to the New Jersey Turnpikes.

Either that, or the New Jersey 16Ws.

That is ridiculous, they have had the name for all these years, now all of a sudden it is offensive. The public picked the name themselves, obviously it was not offensive at that time. This is just an example of an Assemblyman trying to get his name associated with something. I hope the Devils do not have to change their name.

If your team played boring but won 3 championships in 7 years would you be upset? Defense wins championships. :bad:

How ridiculous. Seriously, our society is way too caught up in petty bullsh*t like this. God forbid a team be called the Devils.

Yes. And yet "Indians" (with Chief Wahoo's sh8t-eating grin), "Braves" (and their damn tomahawk chop) and "Redskins" (which seems as offensive as calling a team "Orientals" or "Dagos" or "Cherry-Pickers") are okay. Hooray for America.

It'd be one thing to play boring and win. But the Devils are pretty much the reason that myself, as someone who's played hockey their entire life, can't stand to watch an NHL game anymore.

I played hockey too...and spent most of my time in my half of the ice so you can see why I have an appreciation for fundamentally sound defensive hockey. It's not the Devils fault that they did what they had to do to win chips with a reasonable payroll...don't hate the player hate the game. They should make the ice wider and give goalies less padding but don't think for the Devils ( F the name change )won't adapt and continue the winning tradition when pro hockey comes back.

I'm a defenseman, but I play defense. I don't play, someone's faster than me so let me hold them. I wouldn't work too well on the devils.

If the ice was opened up, and two line passes were eliminated, Brodeur would have about a 1.75 GAA increase in a year. I cringed when there was a chance of a Minnesota/New Jersey final a few years back. I would have seen more exciting hockey at the beginner roller camps I help at.

That Minnesota/NJ final would have been a great chess match where so much would have been riding on each goal that it would have been a series to remember. The Devils did what they had to do to win in a league with teams like Detroit, New York and Toronto that outspend them by millions. :dunno: Whaddayagonna do, eh?

Hooray for America.I don't see an issue with any of those names either. Although the Tomahawk Chop has got to be the most annoying thing, ever. Seriously, during the post season it's after every single pitch. If I were a Braves fan I would have gone mad by now.

I'm a huge Devils fan but (assuming there ever is an NHL again) on principle I will stop rooting for them if they cave in and change their name.

To add to the earlier discussion in this thread, the NHL seriously needs to allow the 2-line pass. That would speed up the game a lot and probably increase scoring.

Slighty off topic, but has anyone been reading about the lock-out? I really hope they start up again in October. It sucks not having the NHL playoffs. A couple months ago I saw my favorite player on an airplane. He was actually sitting behind me in coach. When I get up I just said "Hey man, we miss you guys, can't wait to see ya back on the ice." Needless to say he was really nice, felt bad and spoke with me about things all the way to the baggage area. What's strange is hockey players seem to be the nicest of all professional athletes yet they're acting like such babies right now.

From what I've heard recently, they've been meeting a lot and have made some progress. I really hope there is hockey in October, too.
