Original caption (1966): Rookie shortstop Bobby Murcer (C), of the New York Yankees, is kidded by teammates Mickey Mantle, (L) and Roger Maris over his shirt which features pictures and signatures of the two veteran sluggers. It was all part of fun and games at Yankee Stadium, as the Yanks had last practice before the start of the season on April 12th. Although the Yankee lineup will feature no rookies opening day, the highly touted Murcer is expected to crack it before too long.

Original caption (9/24/69): Boston: Yanks' Bobby Murcer (2nd, L) is restrained by teammate Thurman Munson as he tries to get at Bosox catcher Tom Satriano (R) 4th inning fight, night game, Fenway Park. Murcer thought Satriano tagged him too hard when he was put out at plate on hit by Frank Fernandez to Bosox LF Joe Lahoud who threw to plate for out. Both teams came on field, but fight was over quickly. Plate umpire Merel Anthony (rear, R).

And here's a really good website displaying the photographs of Hank and Bob Olen, with copious old Yankees material. If you click on the link at the top ("The Olen Collection"), there are pages and pages, though unfortunately they all have the watermark semi-obscuring the contents of the photo, so I didn't bother posting them here. But worth a look.

Talked to my friend in Orlando this AM. It was down to forty degrees!.. Hope everyone is staying warm.
This lucky acquisition is three, original fan snapshots from a less than half-full Sportsmen's Park. All are in very fine condition and show exceptional clarity. After a few hours comparing box scores from both leagues in old Sporting News pages and matching them up with the scoreboard in photo 2, I'd finally found the game: June, 7 1941. (I was really bored that day.)
The Clipper is at Game 22 of 'The Streak' and went 3 for 5 in StL this afternoon. Enjoy, Steve

Over the weekend, as a gift, I got an autographed picture of Tino Martinez's game 1 grand slam from the 1998 World Series. It's one hell of a picture.
My question is, is there a web site where I can buy pictures of great Yankee moments. I don't want them autographed, just pictures of them celebrating World Series wins and things like that.
If it was asked somewhere in this thread, I apologize. I don't have the patience to go through the threads. Not right now, at least. Thanks!

Love that photo of Crescent Lake Park BB! If you haven't been there, it's worth a walk-around. Unchanged in about 80 years and wide open for poking around. Beware, the park is haunted.

Can anyone identify the non-Paulie/Donnie Yankee in this picture?
We're 95% certain it's Melido Perez, but he was on the DL at the time it was taken (7/23/95) we think, so we're not 100% sure.

Then again, maybe it is Perez; I just searched the Times around that date, and there's somewhat of an indication that he was with the team then, even though he was on the DL... he was scheduled to start sometime that week, but his shoulder flamed up again, and that was it.

I bought a box of stuff at auction a few years back and there were two 1400' 16mm reels inside. They were of the 1964 & 1963 world series. It was sponsored by Coca-Cola.I had a local video shop put it on dvd but he said he didn't have the proper equipment to do it right but could run me off a few minutes just to kinda see what was on it. It's kinda neat and I wish I knew what was on the rest of them! If anyone is interested I'll sell them. Just email the address on you tube.Hope you like it!

Knickerbocker beer ad, 1936 -- I guess that was the brand Ruppert sold?
Yup.
Anyone know if they are still in business?
OE: From Wiki Answers.com
No, Knickerbocker beer, a product of Rupperts Brewery has been gone since the mid 1970's. The brewery located at 92nd street and 2nd avenue in manhattan closed it's doors in the late 1960's. The product line and brand name was purchased by another brewery but discontinued in the 70's.
Actually I'm sure you could find one on ebay. Well aged
I'm adding to this...Pabst inherited this brand through purchases of breweries and discontinued the Knickerbocker brand in 1997...
While in NYY's Steakhouse last Friday night I thought I saw "Knickerbocker" on one of the taps. I forget what it was actually, but that would have been very, VERY cool if someone brought the name back (Are you listening Brooklyn Brewery?).

One thing that I love about the new place, is the championship "mural" I guess that lines all the various concessions stands, and whatnot on the field level's concourse. Someone should film "stills" of each panel, put music to it and throw it up on YouTube. Its some good stuff looking at moments and people that defined each championship season

Technically not a Yankee photo (TOTALLY WEIRD, RIGHT?), but doesn't Babe look like Joba Chamberlain? That's not just me, is it?

A bit, but I'm still seeing Bruney here. :)
Photo must be from '38, the one year he coached. It must've really ticked him off they passed over him for the managerial job the next year in favor of Durocher (with whom he didn't particularly get along, as I understand it).

Hello all - My father has had this photo for years and it has generated much debate between us. The back is stamped "Bill Mark" as photographer. Any hardcore historians here that can I.D. this photo: People, date and event? Many thanks in advance for help!!!
If the scan isn't big enough I can find an image site to upload to for a larger file.

Well, that picture shows Ralph Houk who managed the yankees from 1961 to 1963 (in later years as well, but due to the style of jacket he is wearing it is most likely from 61-63). The man he is shaking hands with looks vaguely familiar but I can't tell who it is. Also, you can just barely see that the wall at the back of the bleachers in the batters eye is black and not filled with ads; the only time it was like that in Houks first stint as manager was 1961 and 1962, by 63 that area was filled in with ads. If I had to guess, this picture was probably taken around opening day (flower arangement for success the prior year?) or the world series (flowers presented for reaching series?)of either those two years. If you can make the picture larger you may be able to read the teams on the scoreboard and pinpoint the exact day.

Many, many thanks Gehrig39! That'll make the old man happy his guess was right. I didn't think so. When I looked up pictures of Houk on the 'net, I couldn't find one that resembled that profile. I'm guessing the man on the right was the Yankees owner? Anyway, I appreciate the response and glad I came to this forum first... a real class place.

You definitely came to the right place, this is a great forum. I also did the same thing; I first checked Getty Images and Corbis for anything resembling the event in the picture. The only one that came close was a picture of Roger Maris accepting his MVP award on opening day, and it appeared to be an equally overcast day with a similar wreath of flowers on a stand next to him.

I'm guessing the man on the right was the Yankees owner? I've been trying to figure that one out... it's not Topping or Webb. Not Commissioner Frick. Not Roy Hamey. Not Joe Cronin. Not Robert Wagner. ... I'm trying to think who else it might be who's baseball/New York important, but coming up blank.

Any of the names you've mentioned, are they either the Governor of New York or Mayor of NYC? Is that a possibility for the mystery person?

Yeah, Robert Wagner was mayor then -- looked him up because I didn't know what he looked like, and it's definitely not him. And it certainly isn't Nelson Rockefeller (who was governor then), either.

Could the one on the right be Fugazy a wealthy Yankee fan? He definitely isn't Wagner or the NY Yankee owners of that time.

One of my prized possessions..bought it off a buddy who in turn got it from his grandmother while she was cleaning out the attic and found her husbands scrap book full of baseball cards...in that scrapbook were a Gehrig, Cobb, Grover Alexander, Walter Johnson, Sisler, George Burns, and this Ruth..been wanting to get it graded but I'm afraid to mail it off for fear of losing it in the mail.

Finally dug out my pics of my first time to Old Yankee Stadium, not sure when it was, I know it would have been either 88' or 89' season and I know they played the Royals and it was old timers day, was wondering if anyone remembers what game that was and could tell me what Yankee greats were there. The only pic I have of the old timers is one of them wearing a number three Orioles jersey, sorry no scanner, thanks. Also sorry if this is off topic.

Let the rivalry begin -- Babe for Notre Dame, Lou for (U)SC. Chicago, 1927. That looks like Knute to the right of Babe, and USC coach Howard Jones to the right of Lou. And possibly Pop Warner on the end?
[Seriously, though, Lou -- Columbia was still competitive in football back then ... you couldn't've supported your own team?!]

I wonder if this picture was taken after he found out that he couldn't play anymore due to his illness?Photo doesn't say, but I'd take a gander and guess after. I think the newspeople did a series of photos of Gehrig around his house in the months after he retired while he was still well enough to walk. This may have been one of them, but I don't know; 1939 was all it said -- didn't even confirm it was his dog! :)

Nice, Brad! The color looks REALLY fake in the last photo, though -- they shouldn't've even bothered and just left it B&W.
Love the one of Abbott & Costello, as well!
Here's one version of a lead-in to Who's On First:
Costello: "This telegram is from Joe DiMaggio. Listen to this. 'Dear Lou, as you know I am recovering from a foot operation. I would appreciate you taking my place on the New York Yankees while I recover. Please report to Yankee Stadium immediately.' Signed, 'Joe DiMaggio.' Abbott, that's the news I've been waiting for. I'm going to be a big-league ballplayer! Yeah, DiMaggio probably heard about my playing with the Cucamonga Wildcats last year!"
Abbott: "You, a ballplayer, Costello? I don't believe it. You know nothing about ball."
Costello: "Oh no? I eat baseball, I live baseball, all night when I'm asleep I dream about baseball."
Abbott: "Don't you ever dream about girls?"
Costello: "What, and miss my turn up at bat?"
[Abbott groans]
Abbott: "What's a matter with you?"
Costello: "And another thing, Abbott, what page are you on?"
Abbott: "Nevermind what page I'm on!"
Costello: "And another thing, Abbott, not only that, in Paterson, New Jersey, I worked out with a baseball team. I used to stay out until four o'clock in the morning?"
Abbott: "Why did you stay out until four o'clock in the morning?"
Costello: "This was a girls' baseball team!"
Abbott: "Costello, have you really ever played for the New York Yankees? You really have to know something about big-league baseball, Lou."
Costello: "I know all about baseball."
Abbott: "Suppose there's a left-handed pitcher pitching. What do you do?"
Costello: "I put in a right-handed batter."
Abbott: "Now suppose there's a righthander who's pitching. What do you do?"
Costello: "I put in a left-handed batter."
Abbott: "Now I trick you. I take out the right-handed pitcher and put in a left-handed pitcher."
Costello: "And I doublecross you! I take out my left-handed batter, and put in a right-handed batter!"
Abbott: "Now wait a minute? Where are you getting all those right-handed batters?"
Costello: "The same place where you're getting all those left-handed pitchers!"
[It later goes on to talk about Feller pitching for Cleveland. "There's only one Feller pitching for Cleveland!" "You mean the feller that pitches is Feller? And there's no other feller that pitches?"]
