I've recently been following the Columbus Clippers and have been surprised by Carlos Almanzar. He has become their closer and has an era of 0.00.
He could be a factor in the near future in the bronx!

That 0.00 ERA must be from like 2 innings of work total.
He looked like Rich Rodriguez from the Muts out there in March and 1st week in season for the Yankees.
Our closer spot is filled quite nicely.Either he can pitch middle relief or he will make nice trade bait.
Honestly, I wouldn't get terribly excited. Almanzar was one of the worst relief pitchers in the majors last season (I think he allowed an absurd amount of inherited runners to score). The Yankees move in picking him up probably had more to do w/financial causes or the fact that the player they traded him for (David Lee, I think) didn't have any options left.
When he was sent down to AAA I remember hearing Torre say that he thought Almanzar would be back to help the team later in the year. Torre really liked what he saw in the few outings he had I guess?
Greetings Yankee UK and welcome to the home of the greatest baseball team on the planet!!!
Cheers :gulp:

When Almanzar was sent down, I don't think Torre knew what to expect from his pen except for Mo and Stanton and maybe Mendoza (who was coming off the D.L.). However, if the pen keeps performing well there's really no place for Almanzar unless someone is injured (please no) or traded. And his major league stats have been thoroughly lousy; he's been one of those hard throwers with poor control.
He'll have to be patient. So far the bull-pen has not sprung any leaks.
Unless I read wrong, doesn't our bullpen have one of the lowest ERAs in the majors?
The only person I'm somewhat unsure of is Ted Williams. Stanton, Mo, Mendoza have been great (as usual). I think Boehringer has surprised a lot of people and has been really good so far. Choate makes my ulcer a little worse everytime he pitches, but he's been getting the job done more often than not recently. I think they're all solid (thank god).
Almanzar, on the other hand, wasn't anything spectacular while he was in the majors. At Columbus, he's got a 0.00 ERA with 5.1 innings pitched, and one hit. Not bad, but 5 innings is absolutely NOTHING to judge him on. We'll see after a few months.

If he does well in AAA and God forbid someone is injured it is nice to know he may be able to contribute.
Our bp has done a great job so far!! :D
