I figured we should start one of these threads. Kind of like a trash talking thread, but more subtle.

Post bits of news about players here that you "just want to share, because you thought the league would like to know..." and you "don't even know who has the guy, but I figured I would just put it out there..."

I'll start off.

I don't know who has this guy, but I thought this was interesting:

Rick Ankiel will attempt to convert to a full-time outfielder, effective immediately.
That was sudden. Ankiel looked great last September, but says his mechanics were scrambled when he injured his elbow in winter ball. Ankiel was quite erractic early this spring. ''This whole time, that frustration has built up. I just really felt like it was eroding my spirits and starting to affect my personality off the field as well,'' Ankiel said Tuesday. Ankiel is out of options, so he'll need to make the team as an outfielder or get cut. Given the circumstances, it's a lot more likely that he'll be able to clear waivers now.

Found this tidbit intriguing...

Garrett Atkins went 3-for-4 with three runs scored today. He's batting .500 in 16 at-bats.
Atkins' glove probably won't keep him from playing regularly all season long. He has a chance to be one of the National League's top fantasy third basemen. Mar. 10 - 8:30 pm et

Hmmmm. thought provoking...

After going 0-for-3 yesterday, Richie Sexson is now 0-for-12 this spring.
Normally 12 at-bats are not even worth noticing, but Sexson is a unique case. He is coming back from a serious shoulder injury that wiped out nearly his entire 2004 season and there are plenty of concerns about his ability to regain elite power-hitter status. ''I haven't played in a game since April,'' Sexson said. ''That's 10 months. Everybody usually gets four months off. So I've got a lot of catching up to do.'' Mar. 11 - 3:57 am et

From sportsline:

The Seattle Times reports that Richie Sexson passed a huge test when he checked his swing in a third-inning at-bat against San Diego in a spring training game. "He actually had two check swings," said trainer Rick Griffin. "On the first one, I kind of wince and waited to see if there was any effect from it. But he was fine." Sexson injured his shoulder last year on a check swing. (Updated 03/04/2005).

FANTASY ANALYSIS
Sexson's owners should be relieved after this test for two reasons: 1. His injury withstood the hack and 2. He didn't hold back at all during the at-bat. His power should reach the fences in Seattle better than most, so don't leave him on the board because of his new address.

Magglio Ordonez, RF DET

News: Detroit outfielder Maggio Ordonez made his spring training debut Friday against the Yankees, batting cleanup between Ivan Rodriguez and Dmitri Young and serving as the designated hitter. He hit a two-run homer in his second at-bat against New York's Kevin Brown.

Analysis: Monitor Magglio's progress this spring closely. If he can prove that he's fully recovered from his knee injury and back to his old form, he could be a stealhate to be happy about Brown giving up a HR, but nice

Dallas McPherson (javascript:newWin('/cgi/flb/request.dll?PLAYERCARD&nPlayerID=7353'))'s chances at being the Angels' opening day starter at third base took a serious hit on Wednesday, when he had an epidural for a herniated disc in his lower back. He'll miss two to four weeks, making it likely Robb Quinlan (javascript:newWin('/cgi/flb/request.dll?PLAYERCARD&nPlayerID=7192')) will begin the year as the team's starter. McPherson is now a risky draft selection, as back problems can rob a player of some of his power, and he's still a riks for batting average.

The hamstring injury Mariners closer Eddie Guardado sustained while participating in conditioning drills could sideline him for "two or three weeks," manager Mike Hargrove said Friday. "We think he is going to be OK and hope there are things we can do to shorten the time period," Hargrove said. "Time will tell, but it looks like it could be two or three weeks."

Guardado hurt his right hamstring Thursday morning at the Peoria Sports Complex while chasing a baseball thrown by strength and conditioning coach Al Wirtala.

Roberto Alomar didn't play today and is expected to miss another four or five due to a strained back.

''Last year, I had a problem in my upper back. This is more lower back,'' Alomar said. ''I think the fields are a little bit hard right now and there's a lot of standing around. Just one of those things, you play for so many years.'' Alomar is 0-for-10 this spring. If he struggles to bounce back from the injury, maybe he could lose his starting job to Jorge Cantu. Steve Trachsel, who has pitched more than 173 innings in each of the last nine seasons, could miss up to six months after it was learned the veteran right-hander has a herniated disc.

Trachsel, who was expected to be the Mets No. 4 or 5 starter entering the season, on Wednesday saw Los Angeles-based back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed tests on the hurler. MRI and X-rays performed Sunday initially disclosed the disc problem.

Sources indicated that surgery is likely, and if Trachsel undergoes the procedure, he could miss at least six months. If surgery is not deemed necessary, Trachsel could miss as little as three months.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, butI read something interesting about Matt Clement on Yahoo...

Bust
Matt Clement, Boston
Clement leaves the friendly confines of Wrigley Field for the equally venerable and mystical Fenway Park. In doing so, he'll face top-tier offenses every night. Clement got off to a strong first-half start in 2004 before a myriad of injuries conspired to slow him miserably. He managed a frightening 5.90 ERA in the second half and walked nearly five hitters per nine innings pitched. Those numbers in the AL East will be disastrous.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds pushed his surgically repaired right knee so hard that the San Francisco Giants became concerned he might be doing too much. Yet, after 19 major league seasons, the team trusted Bonds knows his body best.

But on Thursday, Bonds underwent a second operation on the knee -- a setback that makes it unlikely the slugger will be ready for opening day.

While the Giants offered no timetable for Bonds' return, it took the seven-time NL MVP more time than expected to recover from the original surgery on the knee on Jan. 31.

"I have a lot of work to do to try to get back, maybe next season, maybe by midseason," he said Tuesday after meeting with San Francisco Giants trainer Stan Conte for 1 1/2 hours.

Excellent question...

I had been debating this question since before the auction, and I came to a conclusion a couple of weeks ago:

He cannot be put on reserve.

Players can only be put on reserve if they are demoted to the minors. In this case, the player was never on the 25 man to start the season.

In order to be able to be reserved, a player must have been active in the Major Leagues for that year.

We don't have a reserve though? 25 active players, 0 reserve, 5 DL, 4 minors.

XII. THE RESERVE LIST

12.1. A team may replace any player on its 23-man roster who has been placed on the Disabled List, sent down to the Minor Leagues, been designated for assignment, or been released by his major league team.

12.2. A reserved player is removed from a team's active roster on the day the transaction was recorded, if it was recorded before Noon Eastern time. If the transaction was recorded on or after Noon, the player is removed from the team’s active roster on the next day. The player is then placed on the team's Reserve List.

12.3. There is no limit to the number of players a team may have on its Reserve List.

12.4. Reserving a player protects a team's rights to that player.

12.5. Once a specific action has been taken to remove a player from its 23-man roster (via release or placing him on the Reserve List), a team is then free to activate a player from reserve, its minor league roster or select any eligible player from waivers or the free agent pool. The salary assigned to a player selected from the free agent pool is $10. When a player is claimed off waivers, his salary either becomes $10 or remains the same, whichever is higher.

12.6. Once a player has been activated from the Disabled List, called up from the minor leagues, or acquired by another major league team, that player must be recalled from the Reserve List within 7 days. For example, if a player is recalled from the DL on Friday May 5, he must be recalled by Friday May 12. If the player is not recalled within this time period, he will be automatically placed on waivers.

12.7. There are no limits to the number of Reserve/Activate moves a team can make in one season.

12.8. A suspended player may not be placed on the reserve list. If a player is suspended by Major League Baseball for seven or more days, he may be waived, but not reserved. If a player is suspended for six or less days, he must remain on the active roster of his rotisserie team.

So really....you should get rid of the disabled list, and just activate the reserve list. That would clear up all the confusion I think...Give people a 10 player (since you need a limit) Reserve limit.

Also, get rid of 12.2, since Sportsline allows us to make moves until 30 minutes before the first game.

Although he's not one of my players, I don't think that's fair. You won't let him be put in the minors, because he spent PRESEASON on the active roster, but you won't let him be put on reserve either.

I think that pre-season rosters shouldn't count. If someone is returned to the minors, and has minor league eligibility, they should be allowed to be put in our minors.

I can understand if the season had started. But not letting a team put a player, who is in the minor leagues either on reserve or in the minors is bullsh*t, if he only spent the preseason on the active roster.

If you're allowing players who are optioned to AAA during the regular season to be sent to our minor league rosters, how can you not allow McPherson to be sent to the minors as well? That makes less than zero sense. If anything, a guy in McPherson's situation should be allowed to be demoted even moreso than, say, a guy who spends half a season in the majors, gets 300 ABs, but then gets sent back to AAA when a big name veteran comes back to the team mid-season or something like that.

I also don't like the idea of referring to a player being put on "reserve" (which implies a bench where we can have players that won't accumulate stats)... We don't have any reserve slots in this league. We have "minors" and "injured".

Well, there's talk of having a reserve for players demoted to the minors who are ineligible for the minors, or people released and not signed to another team...

What??? He was optioned to AAA by the Angels....

It makes zero sense to me this way.

It makes 100% sense.

If you were allowed to pick up rookies in the major league draft for $1, then ship all of them down to the minors once the season began, that is unfair.

Why not just take Delmon Young, Felix Hernandez, etc., etc. for $1 at the end of the auction, with no intention of having them on your roster, just so you can get them on the cheap? That way you get the jump on everyone else for the best talent, AND you don't have to pay $5 for them.

You aren't able to reserve a guy who you purchased in the auction if he hasn't even made the majors this year.

The same situation arose with Steve and Navarro. We discussed it then as well.

I'll throw my .02 in as well,
I think that any player who was drafted in the auction should be ineligible for a minor league spot, if that player is optioned to the minors, the owner should have 7 days to either trade/release the player. However if a player drafted in the minor league draft gets called up, but gets sent back down then we should be able to have that same option.

I guess my point is that if a team drafted a player in the auction, that team essentially promotes that player to the major leagues (fantasy wise), irrelevant of what the players real life team does that player in our little fantasy world IS a major leaguer and should remain so.

Greg Aquino has lost his job as the Diamondbacks' closer, manager Bob Melvin said today.

Melvin doesn't believe that a player can't lose his job to injury. Aquino will set up Brandon Lyon initially. ''I wouldn't be surprised if Aquino is back in that role at some point. He's been coming along nicely, but the way it's going to start is Brandon's going to have the ball last,'' manager Bob Melvin said Sunday.

Bonds underwent arthroscopic surgery by Dr. Arthur Ting on Monday in Southern California to clean out an infection. Bonds already had operations on the knee Jan. 31 and March 17 to remove damaged cartilage.

Bonds confirmed the surgery on his personal website early Wednesday.

But one NL GM branded Reynolds "not that real," and said he won't be convinced until Reynolds "patches up the holes in his swing." We also noticed that baseball men who see a lot of the NL West aren't totally sold on Reynolds yet. So stay tuned.

I'm not confident, just stating an obvious fact. Having good keepers means nothing if your team doesn't do well.

Do you think I won't be in the top 5 by year's end?

You have the players to be there, we'll see.

I sure will brag if I end the year in front of you though.

I don't care about your team.

I'd like to know how we'll settle things if the Sycamore Style (it's not plural) finish in 5th place or better.

You say that with a dramatic flair.

Of course I'm going to finish above you in the standings. Lets not be foolish around my birthday.

Ahhhh, two great SP pickups for THEBOSS84:

Ervin Santana - 6-0, 2.03
Cliff Lee - 5-0, 0.93

You just can't make this sh*t up.

There's a good chance they're both on the WW by the ASB.

After watching Lee pitch last night, do you care to revise your statement yet?

How about we wait until he faces an MLB caliber offense?

Yeah and if Hughes was 6-0 with a 0.81 era with 2 walks in these games vs these teams, we would be annointing him the next Jesus.

Because Hughes was predicted to be a savior of sorts.
