#5 New York Jets vs. #1 Pittsburgh Steelers

The Jets analysis: Chad Pennington really delievered against the San Diego Chargers last week with Curtis Martin held in check with 66 rushing yards. Can Pennington have enough time to throw to Santana Moss and Justin McCareins? Curtis Martin really needs to step up in this game in order for Pennington to be comfortable. The Jets D needs to shut down Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley and also get in Ben Roethlisberger's mug. And also, NO PENALITIES, especially STUPID ONES.

The Steelers analysis: If the rushing combo of Bettis and Staley punishes the Jets D, it will be a long game for the Jets D. The Steelers have one of the best rushing units in the game and if they melt the clock to keep Pennington and Martin in the sidelines, it will be tough for the Jets to gain momentum. The Steelers D is also one of the best against the run. If they shut down Martin and get in Pennington's grill, they can cause a lot of havoc in this game.

The verdict: If Chad Pennington can deliever for the Jets and if the D can get stops on the Steelers, the Jets will trimuph. If the Steelers offense can pick apart the Jets D and the Steelers D causing turnovers with penetration, the Steelers will go to the AFC Championship game.

Steelers 20, Jets 7.

The Jets are capable of winning this game, though I doubt it. However, as is my custom, I picked them in the official poll and will pick them in my score, as I never officially pick against them.

Jets-13
Steelers-10

I really think we can win this game. Chad looked MUCH better so I'm guessing his shoulder is not bothering him as much as it had. That's a big plus. Also, in our previous game against the Steelers, we lost by 11 but had a ton of peneltys, got screwed by the refs, and it was only Chad's 2nd game back. We can win this game and I think we will.

if the Jets are to win....they will need to get out to a lead by halftime or mid-3rd quarter....lets see if Pittsburgh and Big Ben have comeback ability....the Jets "should" have been up by at least 10 points at the half in the regular season matchup....but bad penalties and blown opportunities hurt us....this cannot happen again....the Jets need to be PERFECT to win this game

plus I think if this game takes the same course as the regular season matchup...the same things will happen....the Pitt offense will just wear down our defense with their running game and then beat us on deep passes....this is even more of a concern this time around since Pitt had the week off....while we played a grueling OT game and have only 6 days off

as a Pats fan, I'll be pulling hard for the Jets.....but I don't think they have much of a chance. as dabomb2045 stated, they need to get out and score early, much like the Vikings did yesterday. Make Big Ben throw the ball rather than having Bettis carry it 30 times.

i'm picking the Steelers, but pulling hard for NYJ

This is why I'm taking the Jets if they're getting 6. In the regular season game, they got screwed mightily by the referees, far more than I had seen any other team this season (at one point, the Jets had a ~40 yard run to make it First and Goal, but it was called back on a typical phantom holding call). I'm not sure they'll win, but I think that they'll play Pitt tough, and that, if the referees can stay out of the way, the result shouldn't be the same as it was in the regular season.

If not for some ridiculous penalties last time they played, the Jets would have had that game. And that was only a few weeks ago. I think it will be a good game.

Yep, the BS holding call on Becht negated a 30 yard Lamont Jordan run that got us in the red zone. And, a BS offensive PI call on Santana Moss took us out of field goal range at the end of the half. Plus, Chad is a few more weeks removed from his injury. It'll be a close game and I like our chances.

edit: I should also add that Big Ben Roethlesberger had some rib problems recently and that might affect him. But, to be fair to the Steelers, they will also have Burress in this game which will definitely help their offense.

I would bet and I picked Pitt, but this week I'm rooting for the Jets...First off, I think the Jets win outright. Let everyone sleep on the Jets, just like they did with San Diego. Nobody thinks we have a chance in big bad Pittsburgh. ( I have been there, it's not that big and it's not that bad) 9 points is a ridiculous line. I don't even think the spread on the first game was that much. Bet Jets, even if you think they can't win. If they lose it won't be by nine, Pitt is not explosive enough and Roeth is a huge question mark. This is the playoffs now, it's a different ballgame.

This one is all Big Ben. The Jets past two games have been decided in OT by a lackluster Rams team, and a good game with the Chargers that the Charge shoulda had.

Why should the Chargers have won that game? The Jets were clearly the better team and the game wouldn't have even gone to OT... I just don't undertand how someone could watch that game and still not give the Jets credit for being the better team.

Gotta agree with you on this one. I thought the Chargers were the better team going in because of their record, home field, and the way the Jets played against the Pats in the second game, but I thought watching it that the Jets were a pretty darn good team. They really can play defense, and Pennington looked better than he had in a while.
Give credit where it's due, the Jets won the game.
Good luck against the Steelers!

From watching the game, I don't see how someone can say the Chargers "should have" won. The Jets had 12 less yards on 14 less plays (Jets 6.3 yards per play to the Chargers 5.3), averaged 4.5 yards per rush while holding Tomlinson and the Chargers to 3.0 yards per carry, and won the turnover battle. In addition, it was a stupid personal foul on a Jet that even gave the Chargers a chance in overtime.

I don't mean to bash the Chargers, because they played a pretty good game and they are a very good football team, but I thought the Jets outplayed them, or at the very, very least were not outplayed.

The Jets shut them both down (ATT/Yds/YPC/long/TD):

I don't think Ben will fold under pressure. I love Bill Cowher and I think he'll be able to handle a rookie QB well.

I don't really think this game will be a blowout, since the Jets have a very good defense and can really stop the running game effectively. However, the sheer fact that the Jets offense, no matter how good of a QB Pennington is, just doesn't score a lot of points in a game...which is terrible when you're facing a really good Pittsburgh defense.

Don't get me wrong, if the Jet's win, I'll be a very happy girl. But being a Jet fan all these years I've grown to be rather pessimistic when it comes to this team.

I think you nailed my feelings exactly right there. I've watched this game or one like it in the past. I'm looking for reason's that the Jets will lose rather than reasons they will win.

Chad Pennington's shoulder, another Wayne Chrebet concussion, John Abraham's unwillingness to play... I suppose i'm just a pessimist.

Pennington may not be able to practice Thursday, but coach Herman Edwards is confident his franchise player will be ready for Saturday's playoff game against Pittsburgh."

I'll say it again.....what worries me about this game is Pittsburgh's ability to wear us down late in the game

I cant stress enough how important it would be for us to get a 10 or 14 point lead and carry that into the 2nd half....I'm afraid that if the game is tied or we are down/up by a small margin once the 4th quarter rolls around....we will get worn down and lose control

we are coming off 2 grueling OT games....while Pitt rested alot of regulars vs Buffalo and is also coming off a bye week....they are the more rested team and knowing how physical these 2 teams play anyways, I'm afraid the Jets D will be dog tired by the 4th quarter....this is exactly what happened in the regular season meeting

I wanna see the Jets come out and attack, just like we did against SD....we need to get an early lead....for our sake....and I also wanna see how Pitt and Big Ben respond to a deficit....lets see Big Ben have to throw the ball 35 times and come from behind....instead of 15-20 and just handing off to Staley/Bettis all game

Steelers 20-10. I think it'll be close until late in the game. I just think the Steelers will wear down the Jets defense, scoring a late touchdown late in the game. Also, the Steelers are the more rested team, having basically played their backups during the last game of the regular season and then having the bye week. Plus, the Jets just played almost 5 quarters last week in a tough, physical game.

I bet big money on sports. I base my bets on percentages of what these teams did in this spot against this line over the years. What I bet is only teams that have a 70% on up against a team with a 30% on down. there are no 70+ vs 30- games this week-end, but I will put in 2 small bets.

Here are the percentages for this weeks games.
This is not what they 'may do' but what they have done in this spot against this line:

STEELERS 66% WINNER
JETS 87% WINNER (Great but Steeers are also high at 66%)

FALCONS 20% WINNER (SUCKS)
RAMS 43% WINNER (NOT GOOD ENOUGH)

EAGLES 44% WINNER
VIKES 68% WINNER

PATS 100% WINNER
COLTS 72% WINNER

The Pats have won every single game at home giving 2 points. 100% winners. The Colts are also great at 72%.
BUT....I have to go with a 100% winner.

Also, I have to go AGAINST A 20% WINNER IN Atlanta.
This team loses 4 of every 5 games when at home giving 7 points.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL BETTORS.

very nice recovery by the Jets.....I was extremely worried when we got down 10-0.....the game was on the verge of slipping away early

but our offense responded....Chad has looked great except for the INT....big efforts by our RBs and J-Mac and Moss so far.....awesome return by Moss....once again we are making Big Ben look like a rookie

I thought that was why the review process was created, so that ................ like this doesn't happen, I mean who cares if it's half, review the play get it right, I'm sure the refs have been told "We have a new Budweiser commercial to test, get to half, we can't delay the commercials" (kidding, kinda)
