As I saw today in the daily news, today is the anniversary that ruth was sold to the yanks. I guess this isn't as important, with the curse being broken. But still a good day in yankee history

I have a copy of the contract that says Jan. 3rd isn't the real day of the sale of Ruth to the Yankees in 1920.

There are reports that it was a handshake agreement in late December (the 29th?) 1919, that they decided to delay finalizing and/or announcing until the new year. I have also (in addition to Jan. 3) seen the date January 5 bandied about.

I do not have a copy of a historical document, however, but even then, that wouldn't preclude that late December theory.

Still one of the single most important events in the history of the Yankees. I think the Daily News rated it number two behind Lou Gehrig's speech.

I called it a contract but the copy I have calls it the RUTH AGREEMENTS and it's drawn up by:

FITCH & GRANT,
Attorneys-at-Law,
32 Nassau Street,
New York City.

The agreement is 5 pages long and starts out...

MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT made and dated this 26th

day of December, 1919, by and between AMERICAN LEAGUE

BASEBALL CLUB OF NEW YORK, INC., a New York Corporation,

party of the first part, and THE BOSTON AMERICAN LEAGUE

BASEBALL CLUB, a New Jersey Corporation, party of the

second part.

WHEREAS, the party of the second part by form

of assignment of contract bearing even date herewith, a

copy of which is hereto annexed, has sold, transferred

and set over unto the party of the first part the services

of Player George H. Ruth, and the contract of said Player

George H. Ruth with the party pf the second part for such

services for the baseball seasons of 1919, 1920 and 1921;

On the second page it mentions said promissory notes shall be endorsed by JACOB RUPPERT and TILLINGHAST L. HUSTON.

The fifth page ends with...

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the parties hereto have

caused their respective corporate seals to be hereto affixed

and these presents to be signed by their respective duly

authorized officers the day and year first above written

It was then signed by both Jacob Ruppert President
and H H Frazee President
