12-08) 15:45 PST GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) --

With a doff of his yellow cap, Brett Favre revealed there is something much more important on his mind than the Green Bay Packers' humbling loss at Philadelphia last weekend and the end of his touchdown streak.

"It's a little bit shorter, I wanted to be like you," Favre said as he showed off his buzz cut to a thinning reporter Wednesday.

Actually, Favre cut his hair in a show of support for his wife, Deanna, who is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and is starting to lose her long, brown hair.

"I'm gradually cutting it down so I can be like my wife. I had to ease into it," Favre said. "She'll look a hell of a lot better than me without hair, but maybe that will make her feel better. She has to do it, there's no choice. But just whatever support I can give her."

Deanna Favre was diagnosed with cancer in October and began chemotherapy three weeks ago. She'll undergo radiation treatment early next year after she finishes chemotherapy.

"She's up and down," Favre said. "She's hanging in there probably much better than I would. She has her moments."

The Favres have had a difficult year. The quarterback lost his father, Irv, to a heart attack last December. Deanna's brother, Casey Tynes, 24, was killed in October in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Favre's property near his home in Mississippi. And Deanna, 35, was diagnosed with cancer the following week and underwent a lumpectomy.

"We've had some tough things happen to us, but we've managed to survive and I don't see any reason why we won't during this," Favre said.

Asked how his daughters, 15-year-old Brittany, who is staying with relatives in Mississippi, and 5-year-old Breleigh, were handling their mother's illness, Favre said: "Kids are resilient. Our 5-year-old doesn't really know the difference, fortunately. When she sees her mama without hair, I'm sure that's going to be somewhat traumatic for her, but for the most part she knows no different.

"Brittany being in Mississippi, it's tough, but at a time like this, maybe it's helpful. I don't know. I think it's probably tougher on Deanna and I, trying to manage everyday things and also deal with that. But we've managed to do it so far."

Despite the tribulations, Favre is having another solid season, leading the Packers (7-5) into the thick of the race in the muddled NFC after a 1-4 start.

His streak of 36 straight games with at least one touchdown, 11 shy of the record set by Johnny Unitas from 1956-60, came to an end Sunday at Philadelphia, where Favre exited in the fourth quarter of Green Bay's 47-17 loss.

Favre, who has thrown a touchdown pass in 43 of his last 45 games, said he's not sure anybody will ever challenge Unitas' mark.

"I know one fella who came pretty close," Favre said.

I have the utmost respect for Brett Favre. He's been through a lot this past year, but he always behaves with class when faced with adversity. I'd like to see him get one more ring before the Giants take over the NFC in the years to come :)

Favre rocks. I'd like to see him iwn another SB, too. Too bad his defense will most likely keep that from happening.

That's great he did that. It's so hard finding positive stories about athletes nowadays, and it's nice seeing stories like this. Brett is a class act all the way. :)
