Do any of you folks know his '04 and lifetime UZR?
In sabermetric terms, does he add or subtract from the offensive potency of the lineup compared to Cairo?

His UZR last year was +9 at 2B. His weighted UZR from 2000-03 at SS was -15. So, either last year was a fluky good year defensively or 2B is just much easier to play than SS. As UZR and any defensive metric may fluctuate from year-to-year my guess is that Womack can't be much greater than an average second baseman.

As for offense, any player with a lifetime .274/.319/.362 breakdown is a huge siphon to any offense. It really doesn't matter that he can steal bases because he doesn't get on base often enough to make that worthwhile. The only useful role for Womack would be as a late-inning pinch runner.

This just sounds like a bad pickup, even if his defense at 2B is better than SS and last year's UZR was no fluke.

What makes the pickup bad is that they are giving 2 years at 2 million per year. If it was a 1 year contract for say 750K, it would be a good pickup.

We overpaid, in other words.
Maybe Cano will get a shot at some playing time this year.

Or maybe we'll sign Jeff Kent to a 1 year deal.:dunno:

Perhaps the Yanks will aquire Polanco and use Womack as a bench player. However, as wacky as this offseason has become, I would'nt be surprised at all, if Kent ended up in pinstripes.

That would have made a lot of sense, but why would they sign a bench player for 2 years at $2 million per? Either they overpaid for a backup, or they got a bad player to be a starter.
