View Full Version : Are you a fan of another team?

So, you're a Red Sox fan, ay? Welcome to NYYFans.com. In case you weren't aware, NYY stands for New York Yankees. This site in general, and this game thread forum in specific, is here for the use and enjoyment of Yankee fans. Unlike large fan-run message boards sites for other teams, we don't believe in restricting access to any portion of our site, and welcome Yankee fans and non-Yankee fans alike. In keeping with that mindset, we welcome you to participate in the game threads with all of us Yankee fans.

BUT... please don't forget that this is a YANKEES site for YANKEES FANS. That being said, Yankees fans have a right to expect this forum, and the game threads therein, to be free of people openly rooting against the Yankees, trolling (however subtle it may be), and incitement by fans of other teams.

If you are not a Yankees fan, and you cause any trouble in a game thread, you will have your game thread priveleges revoked (see this thread (http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70263) for more info); but that's only if we believe you contribute to other areas of the forum in a positive way. If you don't add to the forum in general expect to be banned permanently from the entire forum.

The fact that you are not permitted to join, or do not like the people who run, other sites that are geared towards your favorite team is not our problem. This is a site for Yankees fans, and you won't be permitted to post here and continually attack the Yankees or incite our users. As of now you are being held to a higher standard than our Yankee fan community at-large.

We've gone above and beyond reasonable efforts to accomodate non-Yankees fans on this forum. Unfortunately a select few are really beginning to make me regret this; and have begun to ruin it for other non-Yankees fans who are valued members of this community.

What about open dismay at your own team? As I post right now, Pedro and the Red Sox have blown it against the Yankees. Mueller continues to show his batting championship last season was a fluke and Varitek seems to have no interest in a non-strike out at bat. The game thread would seemingly be the appropriate place to express this.

That said, this kind of reaction is very akin to "openly rooting against the Yankees". Many of the Sox fans here are appreciative of the differences with SoSH and I think would like some more clarification on what constitutes inappropriate behavior. Taunting is pretty obvious, some other kinds of posts are more nuanced.

People openly rooting against the Yankees are not a problem, as long as there is no flaming and it's done within the framework of the rules.

Jim,

I think revolking game thread privileges for fans of either team that get out of line is a great idea. I think it will make the game threads much more enjoyable.

Thanks,

GB

Yes, it is a problem. Time and time again members of this forum have proven that they cannot tolerate friendly banter from fans of other teams without getting nasty and hostile. I wish the above were true, and in the past that was what I felt was the case, but it's become very evident to me, this season especially, that members of this site just can't handle it. It's unfortunate, really.

Jim I'm not sure if you're already doing this but how about setting a minimum number of posts before getting access to the Game Threads.
I think this would be effective in eliminating impulsive trolls from other teams.

I think this would be effective in eliminating impulsive trolls from other teams. I wouldn't mind seeing there being a limit on starting threads if they haven't been here at least a week or posted at least 100 posts (especially here and under AtM). Could be used against quality posters, but let 'em just bear with it.

Yes I am Jim... a Red Sox fan for as many years as I can remember. Thanks for the opportunity of posting in the many boards around this wonderful site you have. Any idiot that wants to be here to cause trouble should just go away... cause there is no need for that. I know my place here and can take whatever gets dished out to me with that fact always in mind. Also… I like the intensity and the Yankee loyalty that I feel here from you guys and I'm glad I'm here to see it. :D

haha, your wife is a good woman. She knows where it's at ;)

Actually I can sort of identify with that because the girl so far in my life I've had the biggest thing for (it hasn't really ever went anywhere except some making out, because of distance...), my first crush from like 1st grade, is a Red Sox fan. She moved from Oregon to Vermont and has spent a lot of time in Boston, even though she went to college in upstate New York. So I visited her last summer and had to go to a Red Sox game at Fenway, even though I've still never been to Yankee Stadium (tried once, game was said to be rained out, we later found out it wasn't -- the hotel got it wrong). I give her crap about the Red Sox all the time. I'm not sure I could marry a Red Sox fan, it would be like marrying the enemy, and I think we'd have a lot of fights over sports. I wouldn't want to see her if the Yankees just lost to the Red Sox, I want someone to comfort me during my time of despair not rub it in ;) hahaha.

The Irish are Sox fans or Yankee fans in Montreal? I'm of Irish descent and I will be very disappointed if you tell me that they're Sox fans. Please say it's not so. :(

Wow, i wish i met more Red Sox fans like you, istead of the ones that i have the displeasure of knowing, who are always rubbing every victory of theirs in my face. i think that it is fun to have this rivalry, but some people take it way out of control, yankee fans and red sox fans a like.

I just noticed that fully five people who have posted in this short thread have been RO'd.

I'm not around the GTs much, because I don't get to watch many Yankees games. Do they get that bad? I guess I should read them. :)

I suppose to me the thing is, without the Yankees, the Red Sox would be less interesting.

And vice-versa.

To me, both teams are defined as much by their shared history as anything else.

It would be a shame to forget that.

My favorite team is not important. I'm from Ron Guidry country, and we don't have much MLB coverage in my home area. The New York Yankees have been a team that I have rooted for many times . . . but not every time.

What's important for me to say is that THIS message board is one of the Top Three message boards that I've ever seen. . . and I've been looking at message boards since 1995.

My favorite NY Yankee season is 1996.

Just be careful, and remember that tempers rage VERY high in here during games, toward obscene levels.

Saying "Go Marlins" WILL get you thrown out of the GT. That's just gonna set a TON of people in here off.

You should join a Marlins forum with Marlins fans.

Ohhhhh right, what fans?

With all the utter garbage coming out of the mouths of Yankee fans in the GT, saying "Go Marlins" is actually a very polite thing to say. God knows the Yankees suck chant would be an improvement over the crap being spilled in the GTs.

I have to admit that this year I stayed away from game threads. This new breed of Yankee Fans have a lot to learn. You win some ...you lose some...thats life.I guess it comes along when all you know is winning. Myself being a Yankee Fan since 1967 I`ve been through the lean years. I`m sure when I say this that the New Breed are mostly Bandwagon Fans. If we were .500 or below on a regular basis many of these Fans wouldn`t even be here.

I'm hardly a new breed Yankees fan and I thought on the whole the game threads were a lot of fun. Yeah, Red Sox series tend to bring the worst out in some people.... you just have to learn how to self-filter that stuff out. However, I don't believe there is a right way, or a wrong way, to root as a fan..... but the usual suspects in here (and you know who you are) are a great bunch and I can't wait until the game threads crank up again next season.

By the way, Lou and Hans did a noble job as mods this past season. Thank you, guys.

Agreed. I almost prefer to talk to fans of the opponent than other Yankee fans.

Agreed. I almost prefer to talk to fans of the opponent than other Yankee fans.

That is the reason why ... I like it more being right here. :-shrug-: Red Sox fans share a majority of our team's stuff that I usually already know.

Then there are some of the newer Sox fans that don't know enough about the past about our team and somehow they get facts wrong about those past times we had - or show no interest in the facts of those past times.

Here is better for me. More to learn.
