I know there are a boat-load of them. Does anyone know who they all are and how much they should command? They really got a bargain with Ortiz.

Nomar
Pedro
Lowe
Varitek
Williamson
Pokey
Possibly Bellhorn? I dont know his contract status.

they signed both Trot and Ortiz to extensions prior to the season.

I expect them to resign Pokey since he was dirt cheap this year (Only $1 million). As for the others, anyone's guess. My gut says Pedro, Pokey and Tek re-sign, while Lowe and Nomar walk. Also possible that they could re-sign Williamson.

Well, the big ones left are Pedro, Nomar, and Varitek. I don't think Lowe counts as a "Big 4" FA-to-be anymore, but his contract is up too. Also with unsigned as of season's end are Scott Williamson, Doug Mirabelli, Mark Bellhorn, Pokey Reese, Gabe Kapler, and David McCarty. I could be wrong on this, but I believe Timlin's also got a vesting option based on appearances that hasn't quite been triggered yet, so that would technically make him still a FA-to-be.

The big question is.....how much is Boston willing to give Pedro, and how much Pedro wants. He's making a caRp load right now.

I think Trot got about 4 or 5 mill a year under a 4 year deal. Based on trends in his career and how good of a year he had last season, they got a pretty good deal on him. I seem to remember hearing that had he gone to free agency he could have gotten 6. In general, I think they got good value from both he and Ortiz.

If he re-signs, I expect that it will be for about 12-13 mill/year, ie. Schilling money. Possibility that it might be slightly higher because he has an agent to pay whereas Schill negotiated his own deal w/out an agent.

Schilling...whiz kid...

More importantly...do Sox fans view this as the last chance of this mini run of competetive teams they have put together? The heart and sole were Pedro and Nomar, good chance both are gone after the season.....then the hopes rest on Manny, a solid offensive lineup and an even older Curt Schilling. Thoughts?

I'm not too worried. Theo has shown he can assemble a solid cast around stars and make a competitive team. Re: Pedro and Nomar leaving, I'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I don't see any indications of Schill slowing down after an Cy Young first half.

I dont mean to change topics, but do the Yankees have FA at seasons end? I know they already took care of Mo and Torre, but who else is on a contract year for the Yankees?

Trot seems to be making 7.5 million over the next two seasons. I'd say that's pretty fair.

Ortiz is a bargain at 5.25 and 6.5 over the next two seasons with a reasonable 7.75 million option for 2007.

Ortiz looks like he took a home-town discount and Nixon looks like he signed for market value.

I'm not worried. Most of the talk here and on other boards has been on how many F.A's the Sox have, but looking at it as the glass half-full, it also allows them to re-tool and pick up a few free agents that can replace the ones leaving. With the money saved with not signing Nomar, Lowe and Mendoza, they can easily sign pitchers like Morris and Clement. Walking into Spring Training next year with Schilling, Pedro, Clement, Morris, Wake doesnt sound too bad to me.

Agreed. Four bargain basement signings that have paid off already
